Paul Gorman - 430 Kings Road

Influential designers from a variety of disciplines came together to share their thoughts in Ben Kelly’s 2015 symposium: Interior Design, Dead or Alive. This is Paul Gorman’s recording.
Paul Gorman is a journalist, author and commentator on visual culture. Paul will tell the story of the most significant address in the story of post-war design, fashion, lifestyle and popular culture. “Here, for more than five decades, a huge and colourful cast have alchemised cutting-edge ideas - often out of chaos - and fast tracked them directly into the mainstream.” Malcolm McLaren and Vivien Westwood’s shop at 430 Kings Road has morphed from from ‘Let it Rock’ to ‘Too Fast to Live Too Young to Die’ to ‘Sex’ to ‘Seditionaries’ to ‘Worlds End’.

I grew up on the Cremorne Estate & worked two doors along from 430 at Smile hairdressers. I saw the changes all through the years. I don’t agree with the comment of the area being the slums back then, the houses my family lived in before the Worlds End was built were really nice, even the prefabs. In my opinion it became the slums when the Worlds End flats were built!

That was an excellent talk. I went into Sex once - highly unfriendly and hardly anything to buy - but that was probably the point.

I remember going down to The Paradise Garage quite often. It was a great place to shop and meet up. Then it was taken over by a bunch of silly idiots that attracted its own kind. Awful.
