Paul Kariya should be recognized as one of the most skilled and talented players to ever play in NHL history. Unfortunately, he played in the wrong era and paid an exponential price with multiple concussions and dirty hits to the head. Had he played in today's speed and skill era, he would be right up there with the likes of Sidney Crosby, Connor McDavid and Alex Ovechkin without any doubt whatsoever. Congratulations to Paul Kariya, well-deserved NHL Hall of Famer.

Paul Kariya was the first player I ever idolized. He is definitely one of the pioneers of the game that helped shape the creativity we see in the game today. He wasn't just creative - his execution and timing of that creativity was incredible. Watching him and Teemu together was unbelievable. "The Dynamic Duo." Unstoppable and so many amazing plays. I get very irritated when I hear hockey "fans" criticize the NHL for it's lack of hitting or fighting today. I would much rather see guys like Paul Kariya have long successful careers and a good life after hockey than see dirty late hits like Scott Stevens was known for back then. Think about Crosby or McDavid having their careers cut short 5+ years...it's not right. There is of course still hitting but I'm glad there were rule changes implamented. Wish Kariya was able to play in this era but his legacy speaks for itself. It was just unfortunately cut short by non-hockey plays. He deserved better. And anyone saying he should keep his head up, his head was up the entire time he was hit.

@@spicoli3357 You realize today that's a blindside hit for a reason right? And it was also very late. They made that rule because those hits are cheap. Nothing wrong with looking where you pass if you actually watch hockey. Yes, you want to be aware of your surroundings, but the blindside hit rule was implemented because it's a dangerous hit where the puck carrier cant really see them coming. It was unfortunate Kariya played in an era where that wasn't a rule yet.

I play Goalie so it's less often guy's like me get his, but I've had a few bull rushes on net that ended with my head getting bounced off the ice and I've also been knee'd in the head as well as taken shoulders to the head. It's never fun and sometimes it's very very bad.

Paul Kariya was a great talent. Being an east coast guy we didn't get to see alot of his career, except what espn put up on highlights. Back when espn showed hockey! It sucks that his career was stunted. Too many great players have ended their careers prematurely, and I get the feeling the game has missed some major milestones due to this. I didn’t know much about this guy because he played before I started watching hockey. But now I’m convinced he was one of the most skilled and talented players ever. I love that goal in game 6 and a great call by the announcer “off the floor, on the board”. It’s too bad they didn’t win game seven. Im glad he’s in the hall. I think he would make a great coach if he wanted to. Im not a Ducks fan but it would be epic if he coached the Ducks and took them from being one of the worst teams to winning a Stanley Cup. This was the golden era for me in hockey. I grew up with this brand of hockey and remember those mighty ducks of the 90s with kariya and selanne at the helm. They were a force to be reckon with, as a fan love the big hits on players and liked enforcers like Stevens. But it was sad to see such a great career cut short due to head injuries.

I don't believe for one second Scott Stevens didn't know what he was doing when he hit Kariya and Lindros. He was trying to hit them in the head, and he's too smart not to know the impact those hits could have on the recipients. He WANTED those hits to hurt those players so that they couldn't play and his team would have the advantage. It's no coincidence that it happened to the team's best player each time.

I remember watching this when it was first uploaded and just stumbled across it again. I started watching hockey at the beginning of the 02-03 season. I had no ties to the sport, just became addicted to a hockey game a friend let me borrow on the original Playstation and started watching as soon as the season started. I was 12 years old, I rooted for the Kings because I lived in LA County my whole life up to that point. That first year of watching, Kings were eliminated from playoff contention, Ziggy Palffy was the reason I fell in love with the sport. I watched the entire Ducks run to the final that year and remember “off the floor, on the board.” Paul Kariya cemented my love for the sport and I never looked back. Kariya is one of my all-time favorite players, wish I could have seen the years before that. Despite being a Kings fan, I’ll always be grateful for Kariya helping me get into the sport. I want to show some love for Teemu as well, so much fun to watch over the years. I htes watching the Ducks win the cup in 2007, but I’m glad Selanne was able to get his cup.

I was at the game that night....to me it was late in live action, and even when you slow it down to look at it, it was late...there is at least a 1-2 count before the hit. So in my mind late....It also does look like Stevens let up on it, but still what a night to be at Honda....that building was rocking....

Paul Kariya and Peter Forsberg were very similar players and consequently, two of the most targeted guys in NHL history. PK got his brains knocked around and was constantly slashed and PF had as many concussions and even lost his spleen in a cup final. How these guys continued to keep playing is a superpower I'll never understand.

I'm a big hockey fan. Kariya was an amazing player to watch. His talent and skill set matched any of the elites. The hit and motionless Kariya were difficult to watch. So sad careers get shorten because of dirty hits. No doubt CTE is part of his life now. Hopefully the damage is limited and Kariya will live a normal life.

What do you want to be persuaded of? Who are you to hand out or take a pass from anyone? That's a hit you saw all the time in Hockey back then. You still see big hits occasionally. Hockey is a violent contact sport and it always will be. That's the game everybody knows they are playing. You have to know where guys are at all times. Stevens is right. He could of ended Paul's career right there if he would have hit him full force. Stevens was a beast and a hall of famer.

He had one of the best backhands ever. Maybe the best ever. I remember hearing that he was gifted with great personal discipline. I remember Stevens as someone who hit to hurt. He aimed for players' heads. He would bring his shoulder up from under the players jaw resulting is the worst type of concussion possible because the ends of your jawbone are driven up into your brain. Kariya may still have quite a battle to go through to stay healthy but I know there have been good improvements in treating brain damage caused by concussions.

I met Scot Stevens a few times as a fan and as an employee. I used to help run public autograph sessions and he was the guest one time. He is... HUGE. Like, you don't understand. His hands are enormous.

You should take that into consideration always. Similiar hits happen every now and then in the modern NHL too, look at the Laine hit last year for example.

What ended careers was Lindros playing when he should have been advised not to. He had many concussions prior to the hit on him. As for the Kariya hit from what I can tell it was disgusting and late and what did the NHL do? No suspension. Sorry but the NHL has ended many careers by not having their refs call everything. It still happens to this day and the refs needed to be investigated to see if any of them are on the take. Also suspensions still are not long enough and hell some players even get nothing. Marchand anyone?

With some love from Nashville: Kariya was by far one the most (if not THE most) dynamically skilled players the Preds ever had in their early years. That team ten years ago was loaded...Kariya, Arnott, Sullivan, Dumont, Hartnell, Radulov, P. Forsberg, Legwand, Erat, Timonen, Weber, Suter, Klein, Hamhuis, Zidlicky...and Vokoun in net. Haven't seen that much skill until recent years, and Kariya helped grow this market considerably. Of course, the firesale scare and recession hit soon after...and we had to ship off some players Im sure each of us would've loved to retain for all those years. He's a part of our story...and a favorite among those of us who grew up wanting to be #9 in a nontraditional hockey market. Now we've got yet another #9 doing much of the same and with 150,000 on Broadway. But thank you, Paul, for all of those memories!

Brandon Faun yes sir. Just couldn't hang with the West coast teams and the physical style they play. Lots of role players along with the few skill guys we had. Spent a lot of time at Centennial Sportsplex watching them practice. I've got sticks from Weber, Zidlicky, Adam Hall, Arnott, Smithson, possibly a Kariya Easton shaft, and Mark Eaton. Good times. I was the skate of the union a few years ago and a guy picked up Kariyas helmet he used in Colorado for $20. I about fell over. Lol

Because everything about and around the Stevens hit was more dramatic: the long time Paul was flat on the ice without moving, the moment his visor fogged up and everyone watching let out a sigh of relief, him coming back on the ice to play... and that goal. The goal makes it all the more memorable.

Always admired Kariya. I love the beautiful hockey Anaheim played when they had him and Selanne. But somewhere along the lines, Anaheim became more of a bully team (probably when they got Pronger). Now, the Ducks seem to be in between Skill and Brute Force.
