Australia’s greatest songwriter. He can make you both tear up and laugh within the same verse. Dec 21 is semi-officially “How to make gravy day” here in Aus due to this song.

This song structure is unusual in that it is in the form of a letter from a prisoner to his loved ones at Christmas. It includes the recipe for his gravy within that letter. Paul Kelly is a brilliant song writer. Always makes me tear up.

You should check out the 2021 version when in the middle of Covid people were in lockdown and couldn't see family. Much like Dan in the song we were locked away and missing our loved ones.

The late, great Spencer P. Jones on lap steel. Our old drummer had toured with Spencer's band The Escape Committee. They went through an airport and apparently the staff recognised him and said "hand it over Spence, and we won't get the Beagle involved" and he just handed over a small pile of drugs rather than get charged. According to Paul Kelly in his autobiography, called........ "How to make Gravy", Paul says that Joe, the feller in prison in this song is the same man as in "Too Her Door" and "Love Never Runs On Time".

This started out as a sort of B side. It was an inclusion in one of his albums. However it has a life that has lasted after his more up tempo songs like Beggar on a a Street called Love and To her door. Kelly is a great story teller.

This song is now to be made into a film. I'm so glad you've gone down the Paul Kelky rabbit hole. Just be warned. Its a long but very fruitful one. He's one with the lot. He sings love songs, social justice songs. Domestic violence. Indigenous rights. Dumb Things Sweet Guy Deeper Water Before Too Long To Her Door This is an early hit, an ode to Melbourne, his home city showing the MCG and skyline. Nylex the company went years ago but the sign is now National Trust and still there with the temp in Celsius. kzbin.info/www/bejne/fKXdiqSdntqGetEsi=e0qmFZddKXmt39cx

Nice reaction! Loved it when you suddenly realised he might be in jail. Watch this one, this is Paul Kelly’s TED talk where he explains the story behind him making this song. kzbin.info/www/bejne/hqnYmIGmhZiYa9Usi=kq2y7EPiOdIaS_vC
