Paul Klee and the Iconography of Art

Worldwide Head of Impressionist & Modern Art, Helena Newman, analyzes several of Paul Klee’s pivotal paintings from 1918 & 1919 inspired by his trip to Tunis, as well as works from 1939 & 1941 which were heavily influenced by the Bauhaus movement. Newman navigates the evolution of Klee’s style from works like Landscape With Gallows, Ruins With Stylites, and Memorial For N, all full of explosive kaleidoscopic imagery, abstract lines, and powerful iconographic symbols, all the way through Klee’s shift in creative sensibility to works like The Colorful Woman and Remains Of A Castle, which are defined by a more abstract geometric style.
Paul Klee’s works come from the David M. Solinger Collection and will be offered as a part of the David M. Solinger Collection Evening Auction in New York on the 14th of November at 5:30 PM EST. Watch the livestream on Sothebys.com.
