Isn't the second 'episode' just the most breathtaking melody Schubert ever wrote! Beautifully played. Thanks for posting.
@herodot25 жыл бұрын
Together with the Death and the Maiden variation movement, the second movement of the quintet, the second movement of the Wanderer, the andantino of the A major sonata (another 2nd movement), the second movement of the great C major symphony... - thinking about it, it's seems often the second episodes or movements where Schubert is at his most breathtaking.

Mr Lewis's interpretation is perfectly balanced and has a gentler tone compared to the definitive Alfred Brendel performance. Agree that this one of the most melancholy and profoundly moving pieces in classical piano music.
@christofeles632 жыл бұрын
'Definitive' is appropriate. 'Articulated' is another descriptor for Brendel. Lewis has a freer way with rhythm, is less precise, more atmospheric and impetuous. His performance of the Wanderer-Fantasy knocked my socks off. I felt like I had been raped.

The beautiful, quirky quavers in the left hand in bar 4 deserve to be heard. My only criticism. An excellent performance.

05:21 The most lush part of the piece. Schubert weaved this seemingly unending melody.

Hello my beloved Franz, thanks to your genius, this piece almost plays itself and hence is almost always touching. But for a very special experience, you must give Grigory Sokolov's latest version a try - I strongly doubt that even you imagined all these sounds and whispers, shadows and lights, juxtapositions and much more at once when you composed it!

Paul Lewis is an extremely fine and sensitive pianist and I enjoy his playing a lot. The problem is that Brendel's shadow is a long one in this repertoire and he may never be bettered.

Brendel is the go to performer for Schubert. No one like him. I love Lewis playing Beethoven, and for Schubert, the Wonderer is very good.

Schubert uses contrast to make his musical dramatic point. Check out his String Quintet in C also his String Quartets many of the slow movements have turbulent contrasting middle sections. Basic prinicple of musical form!
@Jalcolm17 жыл бұрын
Wonderfully balanced and beautifully non-committal. You don't have to sell the piece, you just have to play it; because it sells itself. If played too slowly, it is too sugary. Schubert was dying when he wrote this. The pianist should get on with it!
@sansumida12 жыл бұрын
Cool, but I give way to the genius of Schubert! That's what a composer means, to put together disparate musical materials. did not know this piece until recently. Do you know the Fantaisie for piano duet in F minor D940? That is hypnotic, sublime, insistent, there is a touch of OCD in Schubert.

I mean the two 'middle sections': as I don't see why they're here, I suppose I wouldn't play them at all, only the main melody because of its unique beauty.
@militaryandemergencyservic32863 жыл бұрын
At 8:11 he should repeat that section plus he should add another sublime little bridge. For the real version check out Katsaris - or even my version: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Zl6oeGBnd7CpgMU Did he forget? Or did he consider what Schubert wrote to be unworthy of playing?
@geertdehoux12 жыл бұрын
Yes, for me it belongs to the most beautiful music Schubert ever wrote for piano! Only the middle section is a pity...

Hi Sandor. Thanks for the explanation. No doubt many musicians, artists, scientists etc. have so-called 'personality disorders'. For example, many of them have a kind of autism. Nevertheless, I consider 'normal' people MUCH sicker than we are! As my good friend and excellent pianist/musician Vincent says: "Thanks God I'm NOT normal!" :-) Regards from cold Belgium, Geert.

SO FRUSTRATING! Beautiful music played by a true Maestro. But who is directing the camera work? Definitely not a piano lover! I want to see his fingers, not his face. Do these producers not realise that a great deal of the pleasure of piano music is visual? One wants to see the magical dexterity of the performer. We know he is seated at the piano - we don't need constant reminding of this fact. I just couldn't stay with this. It was far too frustrating. Schubert would be disgusted, and it is an insult to Paul Lewis also.
@geertdehoux12 жыл бұрын
Hi, of course, your opinion or choice isn't worth less than mine. The same about the 3rd movement of Brahms' 1st Piano Concerto, the 5th part of Schubert's so called 'Forelle' Quintet, Mozart's so called 'Turkish March': at least in my opinion, they don't serve the music. Was Schubert himself a genius ? He was probably chanelled by what we would call 'genius'. I really dislike that Fantasy in f, for me it's unbearable and even weak music. I would never play that again. Regards, Geert.
@davidmoran543110 жыл бұрын
What a kinda klutzy opening, an unlyrical long line. It does not get better rhythmically after that, all clunkier than not. Expected better given his ultrasolid Beethoven playing.
