This is an amazing video - very innovative for the time. This was during the time Paul was coping it from much of the music media, cos of the Rolling Stone magazine editor building up John and his music. At the same time putting Paul’s work down - even tho he had achieved heaps with Wings with terrific record sales. It’s obvious here that they were both really affected by it all - poor darlings.

*"Paul is the star here..."* Yes, Linda understood that, supported Paul and with no resentment, helped to make Paul's star shine bright. John's first wife, quiet and shy Cynthia, also understood that, supported John in his role as "star", only answered questions posed to her in interviews. Sadly Yoko never got the memo. She constantly competed with John for HIS limelight, never earned her own. Always butted in to answer FOR him, questions posed TO him. Trying with all her might (and failing) to outshine John's star. Angry and jealous of her husband's star power, Yoko shuts him down for 5 years. *"Work with Paul again? Hell no! @Joy Stinson So much of Paul's and John's life mirrored each other. Both lost their mothers early. Both found salvation in R&R. Both had loving 1st wives (Cyn, & Lin) who supported their dreams. Both married scheming second wives (Yoko, Heather) who craved attention, had agendas to use their spouses celebrity to elevate themselves and their "art", or "cause", and both 2nd wives resented being outshined by their famous husbands. Both 2nd wives spew "revisionist" history of their lives with famous husbands. Both 2nd wives credit themselves as "saviors" of sorts to their already world famous husbands lives and careers. Only one Beatle was wise and strong enough to rid himself of the "parasitic" entity that engorged herself on his fame. And both famous men had loving, selfless significant others, who came after the selfish 2nd wives. Paul married his, (3rd wife Nancy) but gullible John lost his chance at real happiness (with May) when he got trapped_again_with Yoko, believing her lies about a smoking cure through HYPNOSIS...and drugs. This was a massive controversy from BBC & McCartney ..McCartney flew to London to premiere the video on Top Of The Pops, but they refused to show it as it had dropped in the charts. McCartney was pissed & threatened to withdraw all his music from the Beeb. They offered to air the video on this show with Noel instead but only if McCartney appeared live and gave an interview. He reluctantly agreed & his first live UK TV appearance since 1973. As you can see this interview was stilted and the McCartneys make little or no effort to answer any of Edmonds' questions. After some reportedly hostile negotiations, the programme's entire show was built around the 'medicine men' theme of the video and the guest who had been booked to appear that week Olivia Newton John had to agree to appear to promote the video in a skit, reportedly against her will and she expressed anger at having her 'starring' role in the show downgraded into a lesser guest spot to make way for the video and McCartney.

Noel Edmonds' interview skills are embarrassingly poor - he acts as though he's the star and the McCartney's are interviewing him! Linda's knee socks - LOL! She looks very uncomfortable here, as she always did in the limelight. She hated publicity but McCartney forced her to prop him up in everything he did after the Beatles split. He could never be a solo performer - without Lennon and the Beatles he was lost. After their marriage, McCartney insisted Linda join him in his band 'Wings' though she couldn't play an instrument or sing! This led to at least one musician leaving the group. John was the same, leaning on Yoko and insisting she collaborate with him musically. It's an unusual trait in successful men, to want their wives to work with them creatively - especially when the women were not on anything like their level of talent. I wonder if it had anything to do with Lennon and McCartney losing their mothers young? McCartney's mother Mary died of breast cancer when he was 14, and John's mum Julia (who he'd been sadly separated from for most of his childhood), was run down and killed by a car when he was 17. It seems too coincidental that both men lost the women most important to them during their formative years, and then were very clingy with the women they committed to.

We all know Macca’s history etc, but there’s also history that happened immediately prior to this clip in autumn 1983 with the BBC & Paul that maybe you’re not familiar with. You can slag off Noel Edmonds but he actually did a decent job under the circumstances, and none of it was his fault. I always had respect for the McCartney’s, but trust me this wasn’t their finest hour...

No wonder Linda got the reputation of being stuck up. She really looked above it all and bored to be there. You would think she would make more of an effort because of her husband. It can't be easy for anyone to go on tv and be entertaining all the time.

@@thesnesman5235 She was a shy person and never felt comfortable being with Paul when he was being interviewed. She would rather he be there on his own. She knew that the interviewers were more interested in Paul, as they should be. She was very nervous when they were together on an interview I would be too! By this time, Paul had been interviewed a thousand or more times and was a pro at it. Linda wasn't. Later when interviewers talked to her specifically on her own, she did a lot better. Paul sometimes wanted her sitting next to him, but he was smart enough to NOT be sitting WITH her when she was the one that was to be interviewed. He didn't want to take the focus off of his wife. I love that about him. Linda was a lovely lady, I know some people who were lucky to meet her and they all said how kind and down to earth she was. I miss her.

@@patticrichton1135yeah , I talked a couple people who met her and they both said she was really sweet, and there were people who knew them personally and liked her more than Paul. I just think it was an interview thing.

1983. The song "Say, Say, Say" came from his LP recording "Pipes Of Peace" which charted mid to late 1983. And he mentioned writing a film score which ended up being his own movie "Give My Regards To BROADSTREET" which came out in 1984.

McCartney was being a petulant child here because he didn't get his way on appearing on TOTP. Poor Olivia-N-J who was booked as the star on this show was even forced to promote his bloody song. In retrospect, I'm glad MJ did a swift one and 'stole' his back catalogue! Linda of course, was lovely as always and stayed above the fray.

Paul and Linda both seem to be high as kites during this interview.

Jerry Cooper I think that might have been part of the problem. Plus Linda’s nerves, and Paul taking an understandable dislike to Noel Edmonds!

We can agree to disagree. They are both stoned. Paul McCartney has been addicted to cannabis for years, as were the rest of the fab four.

@guernseypc His name is William Wallace Shepherd. Lennon refered to him as Beatle Bill. Start with Sgt. Pepper. Do a little research, and come to your own conclusions. I am not being sarcastic. I was 9 -1963-when they(Beatles)came to my town. I have watched them all for a very long time, too. However, I do resemble Eric Clapton. Not kidding.

THIS FROM WIKIPEDIA: "The video of the Paul McCartney & Michael Jackson single 'Say Say Say' had its controversial UK TV second showing on the programme [The Late Late Breakfast Show], after being aired on Channel 4's "The Tube" the previous day. The $500,000 video had not been ready when the track debuted in the UK singles chart. By the time it was finalised, the track had fallen in the chart. McCartney flew to London with the intention of premiering the video on the BBC's flagship music programme Top of the Pops, but the show had a strict policy that no single that had dropped in position could feature, and refused to show it. A furious argument ensued, with BBC staff reporting McCartney was threatening to withdraw all his music from the corporation. As a compromise, the BBC offered to air the video two days later on The Late Late Breakfast Show, which featured weekly live music performances, but rarely aired videos. The BBC agreed to air it on the programme only if McCartney appeared live and gave an interview. He reluctantly agreed and appeared with his wife Linda live on the show on 29 October 1983; his first live UK TV appearance since 1973. The interview was stilted and the McCartneys made little or no effort to answer any of Edmonds' questions. After some reportedly hostile backstage production negotiations, the programme's entire show was built around the 'medicine men' theme of the video and the guest who had been booked to appear that week Olivia Newton John had to agree to appear to promote the video in a skit, reportedly against her will and she expressed anger at having her 'starring' role in the show downgraded into a lesser guest spot to make way for the video and McCartney. The airing of the video on this show was successful as the track climbed back up the chart the following week and aired on Top of the Pops on 4 November 1983."
