Freddy Shumakerr while no one will say that Paul Mayes is a mediocre player by any means, I seriously doubt anyone could do the entire first part (till 00:34) without a breath. Are you 100% certain this wasn’t edited?

Steve, thanks for your kind comments and for asking a very good and important question regarding breathing. You're right, I don't take or use much air because I use a low flow/ high resistance technique across my entire range. Due to the configuration of my physical technique my general level of compression is higher than most players but my top lip is very relaxed which allows maximum resonance and therefore increased amplitude. It's unconventional but most of what I now believe and do is!

Thanks for your positive comments. Great to get this type of feedback and to know it's helping others in some way. Yes I'm preparing some more studies to post soon including 7, 9 and 11. If you ever get that feeling when you need to exhale before you inhale try panting about 10 times before you start - it's a technique I use often. I also get asked a lot about playing the opening 12 bars in one breath; truth is I can actually do it in one @ c=80 ! It's all about efficient use of the air.

@JimboJohnsy Hey, slow and steady is the key. I know everyone hates to hear that advice, I know I did. But until I heeded it I never got anywhere. There are some arban's excercises starting on page 77 that will help. If you slur them first then repeat and double tongue the same thing SLOWLY I bet you'll see some great results. The key with double tonguing is to keep the air flowing as if you were slurring. The tongue can't interrupt airflow that is not present. Hope that helps!!!

Hello Paul, thanks a lot for your answer. I am very interested in your technique. I have started to play trumpet when I was 6 years old. I think the zenit of my "career" was in 5th grade, playing the first trumpet of Bachs overture, but then I was studyin science and I just rediscoverd trumpet again a year ago. (I never stopped totally) But now it is really fun again to try to play Arban and similar things. I now look at the embouchure more with a scientific view and try different things...

@Mouserninja No, no special fingerings. Just 1 & 1-2, only lifting your middle finger. If you tried an alternate fingering (maybe 1-3 for that D), it would be horribly out of tune. Just keep working on it, play it half speed and slowly increase until you're far beyond the normal tempo, then when you play it normal speed it will feel easy. Also, he plays this a little quicker than tempo, so don't feel the need to match him unless you're able.

you are correct, it is supposed to be an A natural for the turn, and that is how paul plays it in this recording. Also Will Strider, the trumpet professor at Tech, also explained that it was an A natural. Also for people looking at this due to all-region- in the second set of erratas released, it includes saying that the A is supposed to be a natural in the turn because reprinted versions do not have the natural sign. It is in the Arbans book itself though.
@James953314 жыл бұрын

And me myself, I can play parts of this, I guess like you, as well as Fantasie Brilliante (even though my triple tonguing isnt too good at all) and I play on a 5B it depends on your preferences, but my director moved me from a 7C to a 3C to 5B, and I used it for every ensemble and Honor Band I played it. Paul, this is superb. I point all my pupils to this video and have learnt a huge amount from watching/listening myself. The main thing I take from it is to stay relaxed and not take too much unnecessary air in. The biggest problem I used to have with these studies was getting all stuffed up and having to release air before breathing in again. I'm not sure what 'low flow/high resistance' means exactly but to me just being relaxed is the no. 1 priority. Any chance of some of the others?

I agree with Ibanez3789 I used to double tounge with doo - goo really fast but could not gain much control, i changed to Ta Ka and i gained a lot more control.
