Having read so many comments on this page I have to state that although 'Queen' were the best act on the day at Live Aid - Sir Paul McCartney was the biggest star at the event. By 1985 the Beatles were the biggest selling music act in history. 'Queen' regard the Beatles as one of their biggest influences. 'Queen' were huge fans of the Beatles. 35 years after 'Live Aid' Sir Paul is still having critically acclaimed and hit selling solo albums. His last album McCartney III went straight in at No1 on the UK charts Xmas 2020. His previous album 'Egypt Station' went straight in at No1 on the US charts. And the Beatles remain one of the biggest selling acts each year - despite having split up over half a century ago. Why? Because of those amazing songs.
@sarahm.53562 жыл бұрын
Buzz Bates, at the time of the show, Dire Straits was the most popular. Geldof wanted them more than anyone else. He asked them first because he knew all the other acts who wouldn't commit would changed their minds if they knew Dire Straits would be there. At least that's what John Illsley said. Remember, this was the same year Brothers in Arms was released. The biggest selling CD in history at the time.

Some context - this was Paul's first live performance since John Lennon was shot. All three Beatles were still very reclusive at the time. Which is why he gets such an unbelievable reaction, and also explains why he only did one song. Ringo and George both refused to attend, as they were still worried about their security, at such a high profile event. Lennon's death encouraged lots of copycats, and all three remaining Beatles received regular death threats throughout the 1980s.

I should have realised that but I didn't. I'm in the middle of watching the Britbox movie When Harvey Met Bob and I was pretty p***ed off with Paul that he had to be coerced into doing one song for Live Aid. Now I get it. Meanwhile, I'm still waiting for Springsteen's excuse for not being there at all. I hope he regrets knocking back the greatest rock gig ever.

I have a fantasy where in an alternate universe, halfway thru Let it be, John George and Ringo all come on stage and they immediately go into “Get Back” and the crowd obviously goes completely crazy. It hurts me that John was gone at this point, because this would have been The Beatles reunion and it would be one for the history books.

THIS is the best Live Aid perfomance. Such a great atmosphere. Night sky, the gentle sound of piano and spectacular Macca's voice. And also such a nice interaction with the crowd and with other great artist. Breathtaking.

I love how chill Paul was about the others coming out and singing with him without him knowing there were technical difficulties, even if they clearly did not know what part of the song he was at lol.
@Boospoochie3 жыл бұрын
But he DID know! He later joked by saying he had thought about changing the lyrics to "There will be some feedback, let it be." He is a true professional. He kept on going no matter what.

In a 1986 interview, Paul said that the mic went off at Wembley but it's on thru TV coverage, but the problem is Paul can't hear himself. To be able to basically hear nothing from himself and still perform this song is legendary as it shows his vocal chord knows every note, or at least every note in that tune.
@normdionne3174Ай бұрын
What? He could hear himself and the piano because both are right near his own ears. One can sing without a mic, you know.

@Logans3Run11 ай бұрын
Alison did say that if she was going to perform a duet with anyone for a single and album track, she said it would be with David Bowie because and quote "Our voices would match up". Little did she know, that 1985 would be the only and closest time, they'd ever get to performing a 'duet'.

At 15 I thought: how many artists in solidarity with the poor, a couple of years later I realized how much publicity they had done for themselves. I immediately fell in love with musicians who hadn't performed at Live Aid. I think it was my first experience with human hypocrisy masquerading as solidarity.

I was there. Paul was having mike problems (you could only hear the piano) so Alison, Pete, Bowie and Bob came out to back him. I think Pete's had one too many haha, or his tumble on stage gave him quite a knock. They've edited this well.

Live Aid concert could only have happened in the 80s when there were still so many legends alive and performing. If they tried something like this with today's current artists it would be a shit show. Just the same reason this summers supposed 50th Woodstock tribute was scrapped, too many crappy artists scheduled to participate.
