I used to collect money from charity boxes a few years ago. One particular shop in Walsall which had a box was always full to the brim with pound coins (a lot of money) and the shopkeeper used to say that it was Paul Merson who regularly put the money in. Yes a great friend indeed and a top bloke :)

When I was in my late 20’s my dad died and I came into some money, I very quickly developed an alcohol and cocaine problem, I had my best friend since kindergarten go mad at me one night after I smashed my flat up after a session, I had other “ friends” enable my behaviour particularly because I always bank rolled our nights out, I ended up having a heart attack and almost dying, when I woke up in the hospital the first thing I saw was my my best mate sitting in a chair next to my bed crying, friends like him and Mers come by once in a lifetime. Hold them close and don’t let go

I used to be a bouncer and once I was lucky enough to be watching Paul Merson while he was doing a public engagement gig , he came to the club after to hang out and after we closed he stayed and spoke at length to the team and all the young bar staff about how quickly alcohol , gambling and drugs can ruin your life from his own experiences , it was incredible and something I always remember whenever I see him on TV. How many of us need a push like that? How many of us would take that push, I’m guessing most of us would get the raving. Yeah, we’d be stuck in a rut and accept that fact. If we just try, and without the excuses we just might make it. How great would it be to be able to say “I wish I did this years ago” rather than it being too late and we’re lying in a *BYE BYE BOX* If at 1st we don’t succeed, you know the rest…

Emotional. Deep. I had a best friend too. He was a gambling addict. One day he started gambling and losing control of it. I could see he was going to rinse his hard earned cash so I stopped him by blocking his card. He thanked me.. eventually he turned against me a while later..so I, with a heavy heart, walked away from this 20 year friendship and kept walking. Still if he needed help today I would find it hard to say no.

I really do hope that merson doesn't have a relapse. I found the first bit around the table, really patronising and annoying by merson, obviously everyone with a drinking problem knows it, and most wouldnt appreciate the lecture by merson, especially in public. Sometimes if someones doesnt want to talk you have to let it lie (or your 'through the window"!). Ive been in recovery for almost 2 years (i can tell you the time and date to the second!), and wish both men well, its a bugger, alcohol

Merse did the right thing here and means well cos he cares about his friend but it wasn’t the time or the place. Should have done it behind closed doors and in private. I also think, although he says he sorted himself out 9 months before, there’s obviously a lot going on in Merse’s head/a lot of emotion. Everything that came pouring out of him here wasn’t all to do with Razor.
