I am lucky enough to have been this dude's piano teacher, many years ago. I was young, and I had no idea what an amazing musician he was. He needed to study keyboard to be a better composer. He played Bach. I wish I knew then what a jewel he is...

How could Monk have a teacher? I was Motian's teacher. A fortuitous accident. My composition teacher was Monk's arranger for his Town Hall Concert.

I would love to be Paul Motian during his 70 and 80 decades. His drumming retained that wide eyed exploration feeling it had when he was 20 and 30 (maybe even moreso). It's not that he play complexly but he always played with great feel and contributed humbly to the song at hand......ALWAYS!
