Of all the videos I have watched this one lesson has upped my accuracy 10 fold! Like Andre below mentioned, I had trouble determining my dominant eye, so I just started throwing from my right eye, instead of left, which was awkward for me as a lefty but I have been pounding the numbers I aim for. Looking forward to the next league night.

Do it like this: Stand at the oche, take a dart upright in your hand (flight pointing to ceiling), extend your arm completely, so that the dart is "in front of" the 20 segment of the dartboard. Now close your left eye. If the dart is still in front of the 20 segment, your right eye, which you left open, is dominant. If the dart "moved" (to the left), your left eye is dominant.

That's a very good tip looking down the barrel of the dart I'm gonna try that!

I’m completely new to darts and this lesson makes so much sense; it’s like looking down an arrow shaft before you loose the arrow. Before I watched this lesson I was literally looking at a point in the dart board pulling my arm back and throwing hoping to hit somewhere near the area I was aiming. If I was really lucky I could get three darts in the large single 20 section (that’s where I always start). I kept wondering to myself how am I supposed to be aiming? But this makes a lot more sense, to look down the shaft of the dart like an arrow shaft instead of trying to gauge with muscle memory after seeing how far off the first one was lol 🤣

And remember, pointy end towards the board, not the eye

I never thought about this much but have known for a long time that I am 'cross dominant' (right hand/left eye). When I first started playing, I threw from the right side of my head because that is what right handed people do. I found out I am cross dominant and threw somewhat from the middle of my face, and sometimes it would still naturally come from near the right side of my face. I used to take a picture of every ton-80 and 9 mark, as well as some outs like a 160 or 132 on bull-bull-32. I have a ton of pictures on my phone. Probably more than of my grandchildren. Somewhere along the line I lost that throw and am trying to get it back.

true, if you use a hand gun or rifle or a straight stick then find you sights. when you do, you have your dominant eye.

I am right handed and left eye dominate. So how does Phil Taylor aim his darts?

The eye you use while you look through a camera is your dominant eye.

What if you're left eye vision is next to useless? Right eye or nothing 😂

Either eye makes the dart move when I close it. Must have two dominant eyes then.

My wife has same issue. Your eyes are actually both dominant. Google it, its interesting.

I don't understand what he means by if the dart moves when you close your right eye... Obviously he means only optically, but does he mean the tip of the dart? When I hold the dart right in front of my eye like that, I kinda see it in double vision. When I close my right eye, the dart doesn't move, but the double vision goes away of course. I do wear glasses (nearsightedness) and I have an astigmatism. Is that related?

This is a reply to an old post but someone else might be having the same problem so... You are left eye dominant. The object is locked to the dominant eye. So your throws and follow through will be governed by that eye. It may benefit you to throw from that eye, if you are right-handed left eye dominant (true cross dominance) check out everything Phil Taylor. His darts seem to take a very central line of sight en route. He is just shooting straight at the target, everything with him is very symmetrical. You mention seeing the dart in double vision. This, if with both eyes open, the dart held further away would obviously appear less double. Everyone sees objects in this manner. Simply take a finger, look at it four inches away and then slowly move it further away. It is obviously less doubled as it moves further away. However, if you are seeing something double with just one eye and the other is closed, this might be because you are looking past the object at another object, see the notes about the phenomena below*. As always see an optician as they may be able to sort you with shooting glasses, some who suffer from astigmatism wear these to great effect. It's important to throw with both eyes open. After a while, it becomes second nature. I actually wear glasses to throw and struggled to hit what I intended. My darts would robin hood each other but next to the object I was aiming at lol. * en.wikisource.org/wiki/An_Inquiry_into_the_Human_Mind *Thomas Reid in 1764 notes: "When the rays of light come from the object in right lines to the eye, without any reflection, inflection, or refraction, we expect, that the object should appear in its real and proper direction from the eye; and so it commonly does. But in the second, third, and fourth experiments, we see the object in a direction which is not its true and real direction from the eye, although the rays come from the object to the eye, without any inflection, reflection, or refraction. When both the object and the eye are fixed without the least motion, and the medium unchanged, we expect that the object should appear to rest, and keep the same place: yet in the second and fourth experiments, when both the eye and the object are at rest, and the medium unchanged, we make the object appear to move upward or downward, or in any direction we please. When we look at the same time, and with the same eye, through holes that stand in a line from right to left, we expect, that the object seen through the left hand hole, should appear on the left, and the object seen through the right hand hole, should appear on the right: vet in the third experiment, we find the direct contrary. Although many instances occur in seeing the same object double with two eyes, we always expect, that it should appear single when seen only by one eye: yet in the second and fourth experiments, we have instances wherein the same object may appear double, triple, or quadruple to one eye, without the help of a polyhedron or multiplying glass. All these extraordinary phenomena, regarding the direction of visible objects from the eye, as well as those that are common and ordinary, lead us to that law of nature which I have mentioned, and are the necessary consequences of it. And, as there is no probability that we shall ever be able to give a reason why pictures upon the retina make us see external objects, any more than pictures upon the hand or upon the cheek; or, that we shall ever be able to give a reason, why we see the object in the direction of a line passing from its picture through the center of the eye, rather than in any other direction. I am therefore apt to look upon this law as a primary law of our constitution." Also check out this article: www.shootinguk.co.uk/answers/eye-dominance-and-your-shooting-13003

You guys aim? I just throw it. The dart doesn't move when I put it in front of or close either eye.

This doesn't seem right. If I do it this way I would be right eye dominant, yet if I do it the proper way to test dominance using both hands in front of you then closing eyes I am left eye dominant.
