We used to go to filmings of "Where The Action Is" and American Bandstand. Loved them so much! Mark Lindsay was very intimidating. So tall and gorgeous. We even found where Fang (Phil Volk) and Paul Revere lived, went to walk down their streets. By Laural Canyon up from Ventura Blvd and out on White Oak past Van Nuys Airport, respectively. Mark had lived in the house where Sharon Tate was killed--up a steep fire road from a school adjacent to Coldwater, in the hills--really hard to access and I had no clue how to get there from the other direction. I recognized photos in Tiger Beat?🧐 We were full-on teeny boppers and they were so kind, patient with us. Dick Clark kept the kids off limits, a really paternal atmosphere on both shows. The groups came out to sign autographs and pose for photos with us, but otherwise they were inside or behind fences. We kids got to see our favorites lip sync all over Los Angeles tho.😍 Our favorites from the Raiders, the Merry Go Round, Bobby Vee, to the Doors and Smokey Robinson. The Raider's music stands up to time, tho these songs on this clip must be from later? They did look nice in those white pants!😉

Paul Revere and The Raiders should have been one of the FIRST artists in. They had more great hits than most and were an exciting, fun act to hear and watch. The Raiders had a long history and were among the first to record Louie Louie and I’m Not Your Stepping Stone before The Monkees made it into a hit.

I adore old stuff like this. I was born in 78 and this is way before my time, but I like to rediscover music like this.I remember hearing Kicks on the radio in the 80's but then 50's and 60's music stopped being played on the oldies radio stations in the mid 90's onward. By the year 2000 oldies were considered only to be 70's, 80's and early 90's. Oldies music to me will always be the 50's 60's and early 70's. Bands like this should not be forgotten. I remember hearing Arthur Brown's song "Fire" on the oldies radio station as a kid late at night, and it scarred me to death. Now kids don't know who Arthur Brown is. How times have changed, and they are going to keep changing. I used to listen to Niel Diamond Hot August Night as a kid. A kid now days has no idea who Niel Diamond is. My point is music should not be forgotten.

65, 66 who didnt rush home from school to see them regularly on Dick Clark's Where the Action Is? Sonny and Cher, The Doors, The Turtles, The Byrds, Shadows of Knight, Sly and the Family Stone--so very many groups introduced to us kids back then. But by and far, Paul Revere and the Raiders my very favorite. Kicks was a staple of all Jr High Garage Bands back then too--Louie, Louie, Kicks, Dirty Water, Gloria, Satisfaction was the usual line up.

By April of 1967 the band already had many previous hits and had many appearances on TV programs other than Where the Action Is and American Bandstand too. How come that was the first and only appearance on Ed Sullivan show? Many other American groups and genres appeared regularly on Ed Sullivan long before Paul Revere and the Raiders did I was always curious as to why. The Byrds also only had one appearance on Ed Sullivan Show, but it was long after Paul Paul Revere and the Raiders appeared. The British acts besides the Beatles appeared far more frequently on Ed Sullivan than American acts. The Dave Clark 5 were on the show eighteen times. The Animals were on five or six times the Rolling Stones were on six times. American Motown acts were on more frequently, though. It was a unusual situation as to how American Rock'n'roll acts were booked for the Ed Sullivan Show.

I'm now 71 not by choice, as I started growing up with music, certain bands I really started to enjoy buying their albums, Paul Revere & The Raiders even though they were a "pop band" I still enjoyed their music. Certain TV musical Shows in the 1960's led me to more music-"Where The Action Is" & "Hullabaloo". A classmate of mine led me to even more bands in the psychedelic era, Then living not far from these 3 places helped-"The Electric Factory"-"The Spectrum"-"The Civic Center" & "The Tower Theatre" saw many good live bands.

I sure hope the official Ed Sullivan Show KZbin channel will upload this in HD at some point, but I'm still glad to finally see the complete performance. Sullivan didn't book a large number of American bands (as opposed to single artists or vocal groups) for his program, and this is actually a pretty great performance (despite the sudden line-up change that occurred very shortly before) from one of the best bands of the 1960's. 👍

How was he mean to the audience?
@bjstone9358
@bjstone9358 Жыл бұрын
@@maryromanek6683 He generally hated the pop music acts that were booked because they would bring in the "screaming girls" that he despised. He wanted his audience to sit quietly and applaud politely when they were done. But he also knew that he was making huge ratings and getting rich off of being the show that had the Beatles, Stones, Paul Revere, the Doors, and countless other rock acts before anyone in the USA had them on the air. In this clip he yells "QUIET!" at the kids in the audience...no one else ever acted like that. He also scolds Paul Revere and the band to hurry up and start playing in this clip. Ed would also get extremely upset if a band was told to do something (like change a lyric, which he told the Doors they must do) but did the lyric anyway (like Jim Morrison did). He would make sure that band never got invited back.
@That_AMC_Guy
@That_AMC_Guy Жыл бұрын
@@bjstone9358 The problem I've been told in this case was that the show ran over time and there wasn't enough time left to allow PR&TR to do "Kicks" with live vocals, as they had done during their other segments in the show. They had to do "Kicks" to playback. Well, this caused a bit of insanity behind the scenes since they had prepared what's sometimes called a "TV MIX" which is the hit records' band track and backing vocals with NO lead vocals. Somebody had to run out, buy a commercial reel tape with "Kicks" on it and get back to the studio. That's why the beginning of the song is a bit warbly and the speed is off because the production crew had to wind the tape to the right spot to start "Kicks" with vocals. All the while, Ed had only been briefed that the show was running over. So, when he introduced the Raiders, he expected them to just start. Well, the boys are standing there, waiting for playback to start, Ed's expecting THEM to start.... it was a debacle to say the least.

Freddy Weller on guitar (12 string and 6 string dual) while Drake Levin was the guitarist who recorded these songs. Who's on the bass? Is that Phil Volk? ("Fang"), doesn't look like Fang.

Mark getting his kicks on what, Dexies? Hard staying on the road. Anyway, this catches them at the height of their popularity much to the annoyance of Ed - "Quiet!!"

I have always been a P.R.and The Raiders fan from their beginnings. First time seeing this and i'm wondering whether they're Live or just Mark is live? He seems live in the first segment and sort of in the second and i must say some very poor camera work! Pity we can't see the whole group! A big let down for such a great group!! Long Live Paul Revere and The Raiders!!

First few songs were playing to a backing track often recorded during rehearsal. Mostly Mark's led vocal seemed live as his vocals cut in and out due to waving the mic in a circle. Bad mic technic. KIcks 100% the record.

Paul Revere and Raiders were not under-rated. They were number one in the 60s. They were bigger than the bettles or running along side tem. My mom could not turn the radio on and not hear them. Their music still sounds great in 2023. You can not keep a great thing down.

Ed Sullivan telling his audience to be quiet. And then impatiently telling the band “come on, come on, go, GO!!” Wow. Ed was in a bad mood that night.

Why aren't they focusing on Phil Volk at all? I know it was forever ago, but just wondered if anyone knew. He was my fave

A garage band… with all 5 guys singing! Their albums were Ho-hum, just vehicles for their singles, but they had monster hit singles. Bass player is brilliant! The choreography was cheesy & they don’t do it here, except at the beginning of “Good Thing” when they’re all going up on their toes… but it defines an era. They were a lot of fun.

Mark forgot that HIS mic was live and he was NOT lip syncing. He kept moving his arms around in showmanship like he does when lip syncing... and thus the mic didn't get all of his lyrics/etc. Love the Raiders... but Mark needed to settle down and deliver the song.
