It's why he isn't aging, he doubled up on the same genetics so one fails he has replacements.

@@slyasleep That has actually nothing to do with it, in fact it would be the opposite inbreeding gives you a higher chance of aging faster. So while yes they technically share the genetic marker, being second cousins is not really anything to worry about unless both their parents and grandparents were directly related. This the best and easiest example to give is this. Take Dany from Game of Thrones, they hadn't had any new blood in their family for 3 generations once the Mad King was born. It's why he was so ill and looked like he was a man in his early 70s by the time he was 40. Why people have described him seemingly having aged decades from around the time he turned 30 until Jamie killed him. And you don't just have to worry and check if they are challenged in any other ways once they are old enough to start to walk and talk on their own accord. He was at a high 60% risk to start having mental deterioration before having turned 28-30. Worse because he didn't get new blood into the family, Dany and her two brothers had roughly 70-75% risk of being born or going mad by the time they were 30 too, and also even higher chance of aging just as fast as their father did. Spoilers for those people that are only now watching it because of House of the Dragon, and is watching Game of Thrones for the first time. The reason Jon was never at any risk (the same as with the Martell children the Mountain killed), and why he got such strong Stark features was because Lyanna brought in new blood, thus reseting the risk. But Rhaegar being 4th generation inbred meant that if you did a DNA test on them, yes Rhaegar is his father. But there would be so many things lacking, that technically he's only 20% his father the rest of Jon's genetic make up comes from Lyanna to make up for what he can't get from his father. You might then think it was a good thing he and Danny didn't have kids, which yes of course. Though despite being his aunt should Jon had gotten Danny pregnant, he would now be genetic reset. Which means they would have the same 25% like Cersei and Jamie had with their kids. It would not genetically have counted as 5th generation inbred all thanks to Lyanna. But they would still be playing with fire and risk having one of their children be like Joffrey whom from a very early age shows signs of psychopathy. Like when he was a 7 and opened up the cats stomach when he found out that it was pregnant.

This only became weird in the last 100 years or so. In fact, the majority of human civilisation rests on people having kids with family members outside of their immediate family. First cousins were less common, but second cousins were the norm (and necessary if you didn't live in a big city)

Second Cousins usually only share about 2 to 6 percent dna ...enough that you might subconsciously find them familiar in an appealing way (see also: genetic attraction) but not so related that it's going to be a serious issue, and is usually no issue at all. Their children typically are as healthy as any other couple's children: Zero health impacts for about 97% of those families! The issue is when more closely related people have children, Or when a gene pool keeps returning to itself too often. If second or third cousins or even fourth keep on marrying, over and over, for generations, recessive genes that originally only one ancestor carrier can become dispersed and then concetrated, which can have good, neutral or bad results depending on what those genes are. A gene for blue eyes? Lots and lots of blue eyed people. But a common ancestor with a genetic predisposition to alcoholism, schizophrenia or cystic fibrosis would have quite a different effect in a gene pool that keeps marrying within itself. For example, both Ashkenazi Jews and French Canadians became isolated populations, though for slightly different reasons, and married within their ethnic subgroups for some centuries, often marrying fourth or fifth cousins over and over. (Even today, both groups are more likely to do so than other groups) As a result, each of those ethnic groups is slightly predisposed to its own Version of Tay Sachs. Being a carrier for Tay Sachs appears to convey some natural protection against Tuberculosis! But an infant who inherits a copy of the gene from both parents will have a slow sad health decline after just a few months, and will die in childhood. There is no cure. With Ashkenazi Jews, the carrier rate is remarkably high, about 11% are carriers, so its important to be genetically tested. The other problem is if more closely related people, first and second cousins, keep on intermarrying over many, many generations, people will eventually be more related than they should be at that level of relation.... To the point that eventually, third cousins marrying would genetically be more like first cousins marrying, which becomes a very real problem. You get marriages that shouldnt be genetic incest, but they are, And if that process continues, you can get to really bad places, with offspring being born with genetic mutations, very increased risk of physical and mental health problems, and a range of disabilities, both physical and intellectual.

My grandparents were first cousins. It's not good. My mom and all her siblings seem to have a lot of cognitive issues. I refer to them as "smart-dumb", they're not full on retarted, some of them are smart in certain ways, but they're really not that bright. Thankfully my mom married someone unrelated, so at least I'm LESS inbred. I'm one of the first in my family to go to college and have a successful white collar job. Don't marry your cousin. Not good.
