That wasn't his first encounter with melange. Firstly, anyone who could afford it used spice. Taken in low doses it was an immune strengthener and it could double even triple life spans. House Atreides certainly could afford it. Secondly, Dune's environment was satiated with it. It was in the very air Paul breathed. Probably why his visions and dreams intensified. He was well on his way to becoming prescient. I see it as he's accepting his destiny. "Here I am and here I will stay."
