Background
This is a highly significant documentary of record about one of the greatest actors of stage and screen. It is no longer available in any format. In the interests of art, of education, of culture - here it is.

Fair Use Note to Copyright holders: please send me a PM (rather than use the YT route) should you object to any content owned by you in this video. I shall address any issues immediately. Rather that than engage with blank-eyed AI.
The Man and the Actor
"David Paul Scofield CH CBE (21 January 1922 - 19 March 2008) was an English actor of stage and screen who was known for his striking presence, distinctive voice, and for the clarity and effortless intensity of his delivery.
Regarded as one of the greatest Shakespearean actors of all time, Scofield preferred the stage over film. This, and his decision to put his family first, has meant that he has never been as well known outside the United Kingdom as some other actors". (Courtesy of Wikipedia).
Upload Reasons
No longer available to view or purchase anywhere as far as I can see, so in good conscience I have uploaded the only recording I could find of this marvellous documentary. It was originally captured in 6 parts which I have attempted to stitch together, somewhat imperfectly.
Please forgive the variable video quality too: I can't recall the source, but I strongly believe this documentary should again see the light of day, in honour of Paul Scofield.
Music
Many of my Subs will recognise the music used in this production - in particular, Vaughan Williams and Butterworth.
Produced and directed by David Thompson.

Scofield was such a model for the art of acting. Here is a guy who really had it all, handsome, talented, wonderful voice, and could have made so much money in films. Yet, unlike Burton, he stayed true to his talent and ambition, and produced some of the great theatrical acting performances in England in the 20th century. Burton later said that of the ten greatest stage performances he saw, Scofield did eight of them.

At least Burton put his great talent out for general viewing rather than the close confines of unrecorded elitest theatre.The public today don't give a crap about scofields theatre. They remember 'Man for all Seasons, The Train, a ghost cameo in Gibsons Hamlet.With Burton, he did his fair share of theatre, and brought what he learned into public viewing more than any other actor.

Happy 100th birthday to one of my favorite actors, Paul Scofield. In high school, I read Arthur Miller's The Crucible and then saw the movie adaptation where I discovered Scofield, then I found his amazing performances in A Man for All Seasons and Quiz Show. I know one month later, it'll be his beloved Joy's 100th as well. "I die His Majesty's good servant, but God's first."

I was 12 when I saw it in 1967. It was a roadshow film, in those days, reserved seats so it was like going to see a play in a way. You only get to see that performance. I went during a Wednesday matinee and that is one of only two times that I'd done that, the other was a much lessor film, Finian's Rainbow the next year, but performance by Paul was absolutely stunning! I actually realized this at that age! I've loved this guy ever since. Would have been wonderful to have seen him in person. Never had that chance, but at least we have him in some very good film performances: A Man for All Seasons, Quiz Show, The Train, the crucible just to name a few, and of course, when it came to film, he did so few.

Later into this documentary, director Nicholas Hytner discusses the differing acting approach between Daniel Day Lewis and Paul Scofield. And I feel he doesn't quite grasp what Paul was capable of doing. In such rare actors as Paul Scofield there is an immediately accessible reservoir of human feeling, emotion, empathy and intelligence. It came to him instinctively, as if the character and the actor were indivisible. The shapes of language, the sound of how words are pronounced have ath their center an objective for communication. The more complete that connection is, the less work there is to do in order to perform. That's why some gr3eat performances seem effortless and transcendent. There is simply do division between what is being felt and what is being said. But most actors have to work enormously hard to get to that effortlessness.

"But for Wales" is humorous because Wales at that time was an insignificance, relative to the centres of real power in the Realm. Yet Scofield avoided the obvious joke, and instead expressed its deeper, tragic, truth.

Wow! That was awesome. Methinks folk "fell under his 'spell'" simply owing to his authenticity. From his own testimony, that emptiness which followed the performance' completion, he was not so much acting as embodying his characters, which readily endears us as he is whomever he is playing, seems. While it was only "work," yet he honestly gave himself so entirely to it, ah, how he tempts me...to try following in his footsteps, for the sheer joy of it. Silly me. Thank you so very much.

Just missed his Amadeus -- I saw the what I believe was the second London cast (Frank Finlay): still excellent but there were dreadful problems with the sound system which was, of course, playing some of the greatest music ever composed. Still, golden memories. 6:11 *ABSOLUTE NONSENSE* More has no crisis of conscience at any stage. He stands by his conscience throughout and is willing to die for his principles.
@AntPDC
@AntPDC 3 жыл бұрын
Sir Thomas did indeed have a crisis of conscience: his Christian faith versus his loyalty to his family, the King, order, and the Rule of Law. The latter, earthly considerations, didn't prevail, as one would expect of a man like him; a man whose faith held his God higher than his earthly life, and his loyalty to the temporal King. He was human, not merely a machine Roman Catholic.
@ppuh6tfrz646
@ppuh6tfrz646 3 жыл бұрын
@@AntPDC No. His predicament was never one of his Christian faith versus his loyalty to his family or the Rule of Law. He was totally loyal to his family and he adhered more to the rule of law than anyone else - the scene where he spoke of giving the Devil the benefit of law shows this. A crisis of conscience is where someone is unsure of what is the right thing to do or feels guilty for doing something that they feel goes against their morals and principles. More never had any uncertainty regarding the former and he stuck firmly to his morals and principles throughout. There was never any stage in the story where there was a doubt about that.

First of all, oh my goodness! What I would give to see Expresso Bongo with Mr. Scofield and the rest of the cast! @brianrodney5202
@brianrodney5202 6 жыл бұрын
Wikipedia explains the plot of Expresso Bongo far better than I can. The cast included Millicent Martin and Hy Hazel, a popular artist of the time. The character of a pop-music promoter, who actually preferred opera, was played by Meia Tzelniker and stopped the show with a song which began ( about a budding pop-singer he is about to promote ) " When I hear this little bleeder And compere him with " Aida " Nausea! When I listen to this 'Charlie ' And I think of ' Don Pasquale " Nause ! " The plot was savage satire on the pop-music industry of the day. A movie was made of the musical, but all the satire both in the book and the lyrics was ditched. Cliff Richard played the pop-singer and it was aimed at his fans, so you can see why this was done. Can I recommend you watch the BBC six- part dramatisation of Dickens's " Martin Chuzzlewit " in which Paul Schofield plays two parts. Here is part one kzbin.info/www/bejne/l6O5kqWNfpaJr9U

Can it be so long ago that he died! I still think about his acting and his beautiful voice. It is a shame that he wasn't too interested in doing films, then we could all still enjoy more of his acting. But he wasn't interested in doing much, both for his own personal reasons, and I believe I also read somewhere that he found the cameras intrusive - and of course the acting has to be done in bits and pieces, which would not have suited his concentrated style.

Lovely to watch this great film again - I am so glad it was posted here. 'A Man for All seasons' is among my very favourite films - and I remember reading David Putnam speak of how it influenced another film I love, 'Chariots of fire'. But it was great to be introduced to Scofield as a human being and to much of the rest of his work. I look forward to watching film of his 'King Lear' - and, perhaps, to 'The Crucible'. And it was interesting to see someone of this level of talent so committed to his craft and yet so dismissive of the accompanying fame, so intensely private and yet apparently decent. A very moving documentary.

@@bwilson308 Also, note that Daniel Day Lewis was heavily influenced by Scofield, and not a surprise. Scofield was as good as they get, period. Forget the Oscar count, as Alan Rickman said so truthfully, parts win Oscars, not performance and this is so true. Paul had the winning part that year and although Burton was also up, it was clear that year that even though Virginia Wolf had the most nominations, A Man for All seasons was going to win the top Prize and an acting award almost always goes with that and Scofield swept the critics awards that year, and let's face it, as wonderful as the other performances were in that film, it was a showcase for Thomas Moore, and his work stands the test of time. Truly wonderful work. By the way, Chariots of fire is also one of my favorites as well.

6:30 Scofield didn't portray the more questionable, self-righteous side of More because he was playing the character as it was written in the play. That's his job.

Paul Schofield was a great actor. Little englanders insistence on prefacing his name with the word 'british' in this documentary is unfortunate and will probably deter many of his admirers from watching this otherwise enjoyable appreciation of his talent.
