Coffee? To much coffee? I mean if you drink coffee, which use to be a very big Brazilian thing, back in the 40's, you can carry on a conversation about anything, in fact everything- all at once. I'm not saying you drink too much coffee, but I LOVE it. Ever since I visited a diner near the Brill Building, which is in New York. It had doors. And sometimes they were locked. But we'd drink coffee all night and wait until they opened. And- oh, are you Donald Fagen? I remember you from the 70's and your partner Walter Becker. You made how many albums? As I remember, it was about a dozen. I used to listen to them outside the Brill Building, and - oh that's our time. Thanks for visiting, Dirk Fagen! Time flew by.

I had to stay below, in order not to get hit with shit. That goes for other composers too I guess. But one day, friends, that crap under the wings of Phoenix will come to close to the sun. That will be the time for us mongrels to rise up and lead the way. Donald Fagen led the way, but we nead guys and girls carrying the heritage of musicianship like that of Donald and Walter. As well as the amazing Keith Carlock on drums. It was my first time seeing SD. I remember watching Donald and his singing and playing I could see and hear a Ray Charles influence. It was so interesting. My sincere condolences to Donald and the Steely Dan family. Walter was an amazing player and writer and I am sure a wonderful partner to you Donald. I have heard in many interviews that you guys had your own sense of humor and language and how you both would discuss ideas in your music around other musicians. Everyone who had witnessed those discussions between music partners said in interviews that it was fantastic to be able to witness that firsthand. If you were one of the musicians on an SD session or rehearsal. I want to thank you, Paul and Donald!! Great to watch this interview and listen to you guys jam. I lit up when this interview appeared in my feed. I’ve been a Steely Dan fan since I was a teenager. Becker and Fagen were geniuses, as Donald continues to be. I was really looking forward to hearing his insights. Perhaps (hopefully) even plans to go back to the vaults to remaster unreleased tracks, for new 50th Anniversary reissues. Sadly, I won’t find out from this segment, as I had to stop it after 5 minutes. This was like an SNL skit that overran its welcome. Paul’s a consummate musician, but he’s got a lot to learn about interviewing, and letting his guests SPEAK. I give Donald credit for having the patience of a saint, here. He handled it better than I would have…

I did meet DF. I was in Australia watching SD concerts in 2007 and ended up taking the same commercial flight from Perth to Adelaide that the band was taking. I figured out we were all in the departure lounge and slowly I made my way around to say a quick hello. Maybe not possible to do that in the US, but the way it worked out in Australia we ran into the band more than once. Becker and Fagen were not around after shows, but we bumped into the other band members a couple of times.

I am so sorry that Donald Fagen had to undergo this excruciating interview, but he overcame what he was dealt with. Mr. Fagen was the consummate professional, the epitome of cool, the opposite of Paul Shaffer.

I think you are misreading this exchange. Donald had more fun being interviewed here (partly thanks to the piano in front of him) than we've come to expect. Donald is also cool enough not to be an egotistical a-hole about having far greater career success than Paul, and he clearly respects his knowledge.

Steely Dan one of the best bands ever, I love their sophisticated type of jazz, and all their fusion, is so unique, hard to explain but beatiful music they made, is one of those bands that I never get tired of listening, thanks for all the music 👌🏻💯

awesome to see fagen what a dude, fascinating. paul shaffer -- as an interviewer: really horrible, embarrassing to see, and actually anger inducing. did not acquit himself well at all, seeming like he had just done five lines or something... i have work meetings and there is often someone who sucks all the air out the room, and they have no idea they are doing it... i mean, he can play, and wants to jam, although he also led all the time with that too.... so...: this is great stuff. donald is 100% awesome, nothing fazes him -> no surprise...

Why was the music of the 60s & 70s so good? Because it was era in music that, unlike today, was more or less a meritocracy. Only the best rose to the top and were allowed to be on the radio and/or TV and hold our collective attention.

Agree with wf1g . . . so much wonderful history that Fagen COULD have provided, were it not for Schaffer's ENDLESS interruptions. Schaffer needs to be reminded that we have tuned in to learn about his Guests, and NOT Schaffer. Very impressed that Fagen was able to ignore Schaffer's narcissism and not tell him just to STFU.
