im from montreal i saw Pedro Martinez debute and i followed him his whole career. The ball mouvement on Paul Skenes pitches remind a lot of Pedro Martinez plus a 100 mph fastball. This is generational pitching right there. Baseball is a very good spot right now, talent is at a hightime level. If the MLB can make it so those talent can express themself freely we got many years of great baseball ahead of us. It is up to MLB to not drop the ..ball. Bedoom tss !

I invented a pitch when I was in little league. I called it the F U ball. Gripped the baseball with the middle finger 🖕 between the two seems and it danced like a screwball but it had good velocity and acted like a splitter at the end. I struck out a lot of ham and eggers with that pitch. 😂

Anyone remember another Pirates pitcher named Bryan Bullington who was the next "can't miss" arm? Given the rash of injuries to starting pitching, it's only a matter of time before Skenes blows his arm out. This kind of heat and torque on the ligaments will not be sustainable. This is fun while it lasts, but just wait.

If the Pirates don't sign him to a long term contract with incentives immediately, they should sell the team to New York. I remember Ryan throwing the first 100 mph pitch ever. Ryan could throw a few each game, but Skenes is throwing 100 mph consistently. The real issue with his 'splinker' is that it looks like his fastball but drops in on the right side at 98 mph! If his arm holds up, he is a future HOFer. The problem with his pitch is it will make baseball even more boring to watch.

Pirates ownership will find a reason to trade or sell this guy to another ballclub for pretty much nothing as the case has been since the mid 90's. The ownership makes too much money on tickets, concessions, merchandise, etc. The last great Pirates teams were between 1989-1993 and managed by Jim Leyland, they were one of the top 5 teams in the league, but look at them 30+ years later, no World Series since 1979. Take it from me, I used to be a Pirates fan, but it's been 30 years since I cared.

I met Randy Johnson, I asked him creative pitches he has tried. Griped the threads with his pinky and ring finger and said throw as hard as you , use a cone or batting tee as a batter practice until you hit the cone once every 3 throws. It is a difficult pitch. I did use it a few times when I was ahead in the count. The ball had very unpredictable location. As a southpaw pitcher it would approach a righty hitter as a change up then go up and in setting up the next pitch.

@doug37735 ай бұрын
just a splitter thrown at high velocity, they’re trying to make Paul out to be some guru who created an entire pitch….
@nolegsmcgee4835 ай бұрын
@@doug3773 not exactly. its a pitch thrown with a splitter grip, but it moves like a sinker. for a true splitter look at shohei, straight vertical movement that is about 8mph slower than his fastball. a true sinker has its own grip with the pointer and middle fingers on the narrow part of the seams parralel to them, as opposed to a 4 seam fb which as the name suggests, intersects the seams at 4 places. a sinker is usually pretty close in velocity to the 4 seamer, typically 1-2 mph slower for the better sinker ballers who also throw a fastball. The splinker is, you guessed it, a hybrid of the 2. It is slower than the heater but not as much as a splitter, skenes' is 5mph slower according to baseball savant, but it has movement close to the downward break of a splitter with as decent amount of arm side run like a sinker. But yes, Paul did not invent it. Prior to skenes, Jhoan Duran was throwing a splinker that is better than skenes at least by velocity. but paul's xwoba, or expected weighted on base% is better at .245 vs .258.
