Tbf, I did not know the answer. However, asking it this way (when both people know the answer) makes it feel like it's a trap, a leading question to open other controversial subjects. It would have felt much fairer to ask something like "I heard/I know you showed this film to Tom Cruise, your former collaborator and famous Scientologist. Is there anything you'd like to say about that experience?" The answer would 100% have been "No" all the same, and she could have followed with "I'm sorry, I thought it was interesting and I had to ask. Moving on...". This isn't an "interview." This is a press junket to hype the film. Questions are vetted and pre-scripted. Talking points are prepped by press agents and PR teams. When the interviewer goes off script to ask "hard" questions or things "off the table," it's a huge no-no.
@PiCheZvara3 жыл бұрын
Nope, you're missing the point. The point is this was a simple press junket interview for Anderson's new movie, he made one movie with Cruise like 14 years prior to this, they are not friends or relatives, Cruise is known to be a nut about his religion, so why the fuck would Anderson show him the movie? I think she was digging for some kind of reply about Cruise and trying to find a connection that could’ve been personal to Anderson. It’s completely in Anderson’s moral right to not answer the question and to shoot down any attempt to pry into his personal relationship with Cruise, who is not directly related to the film at all. I think the interviewer could’ve assumed that the link between Anderson’s film and cruise would’ve been apparent to the fans, and I think she was just doing what interviewers do a lot of; digging for answers to questions that have no bearing on the film.
@anonymousrex80884 жыл бұрын
She's right and he's wrong. Celebrities get annoyed that they go on a junket and get the same question in 50 interviews from 50 outlets. But that's because it's for 50 different audiences. And because he wants to promote his movie in 50 places without leaving his chair. He chose the topic of his movie (Scientology), not her.
@Thegbear4 жыл бұрын
Nahh, they’re both right. To be in a significant position like PTA and draw the ire of Scientologists by targeting their celebrity leader in interviews can be a highly dangerous move. Making a movie, it’s art, you can’t really sue over it given it’s a work of fiction. To outright make a statement though, that’s dangerous, and I don’t blame him for not wanting to do it. The interviewer was also in the right for pressing the question given their prior relationship. We also don’t have all of the information here, so I think this is just a reasonable interaction on both sides.

That's absolutely moronic. If he doesn't want to answer, he doesn't have to answer. No one is entitled to ask anything personal about Tom Cruise from PTA. He doesn't owe you anything nor does Cruise who has not promoted Scientology in like almost 10+ years plus the fact the last time he worked with Cruise was in 1999. Plus you have to realize that PTA has denied scientology hints in The Master for some important reasons, even though both you and I know that the movie does indeed refers to Scientology to a very huge extent, I am sure that PTA doesn't wanna risk death threats, attacks and most importantly lawsuits from Scientology community.
@MatchesMalone11833 жыл бұрын
@@Izaan2810 I didn't say he had to answer. What he didn't have to do was act like a petulant teenager. A simple but respectful no comment would have sufficed. As for Cruise his membership and promotion of Scientology, regardless of when he was last public about it, is public knowledge because he made it so. A journalist asking a question that is in the public interest, is entirely fair game. Again though PTA can just give a no comment, but the journalist still has to ask the question. I'm not hopeful that the kind of person who starts comments with that's moronic is actually going to give me anything thoughtful back, but hey I'm bored.

Just ask questions regarding the film and be done with it without bringing up something really controversial about a person, Anderson called a friend. @@Izaan2810 A journalist asking about a controversial issue, imagine. Cruise is one of the elites of a cult. If a journalist can't ask a director about working with said actor in the cult, given that he then went on to make a film about the cults founder, then what the fuck is the point of her even interviewing him. If you can't understand that it was an entirely relevant and obvious question for her to ask, was in the public interest etc, then you are the moron. It's not like she's asking him about a child of his that died for example, or his personal health, or the health of a family member. That's what I would call personal. Asking him about an actor he worked with, who's in a cult, and publicly known to be so, is not a personal question. Again if he didn't want questions about working with Cruise, then don't make a movie about the cult that he's in, it's very simple. Oh and Cruise and Scientology is not a "debate", again he's an elite in a literal cult, it's that simple. What was his reaction, given the subject matter?" And for everyone saying that he was rude in the way he responded, look at the way she responds to his question first. The movie is not about Tom Cruise. The movie is not about Anderson’s relationship with Tom Cruise. The reporter was trying to make something out of nothing; the only links here are that the movie is about a Scientology-like cult, and that Tom cruise who is Anderson’s friend is a Scientologist. What answer could come out of the question? Was Anderson influenced by specifically Cruise’s Scientology? More likely is that he was influenced by Scientology in general and Cruise has nothing to do with it. Maybe Anderson’s relationship with Cruise caused him to think about Scientology, but that still has zero bearing. The reporter mentioned Cruise because he’s famous and no other reason.

People don't seem to understand that the fact that viewers may not know the answer is irrelevant. She already knew that he had shown Cruise the movie, that information can be delivered to viewers in a multitude of ways. But, she was fully aware that this would be a touchy subject for Paul. The question wasn't actually about the question, it was about getting a reaction out of him. That's why she's in the wrong. The Reporter is in the right here. It is her job to ask questions that her viewers might want to ask themselves. It's no secret that Scientology is a Cult and that Cruise is its most well known member. And "The Master" is a film that obviously draws many parallels to that Cult. All Anderson had to say was "I'd prefer not to answer that question". If she persisted in that line of questioning then he could've fired back. As it stands, he was rude and oversensitive here in my opinion.

@@redadamearth you’re misusing the term “salacious” which has to do with interest in sexual matters… Either way, it’s literally her job as an Interviewer to ask questions. Now… PTA made a movie about a cult. He also has a relationship with a famous person within a cult. It’s entirely appropriate to ask whether or not that relationship helped to inform his creative process and the direction he wanted to take the film in. But Anderson (much like yourself) assumed their was negative intention behind the question. If there is reasonable doubt behind someone’s intentions then it’s your personal responsibility to inquire as such before proceeding to judgmental anger or frustration. Jumping to conclusions and assuming there was ill intent is not productive. PTA was in the wrong here. I’m not saying that makes him a bad person. PTA knows this and shut her down, as he should have. It was a press-round-up interview about the film - each "reporter" had about 5 minutes with PTA on "The Master" - her question was not about the movie, about making it or anything about it - and PTA has gotten that SAME QUESTION for literally DOZENS of interviewers, repeatedly - at this point, he was just sick of it, as she was being self-serving to get a headline for herself and wasn't interested in the actual movie - it was a GOSSIP question and her time was supposed to be about the movie - not about Tom Cruise. PTA's personal relationship with Tom Cruise had nothing to do with why any of the reporters were there. It's a private thing and she was trying to promote herself with a gossip question. It was shallow and irrelevant. There are reporters who are genuinely interested in filmmaking and the movie they're interviewing a filmmaker about and then there are self-serving glorified gossip columnists and she basically revealed to PTA that all she cares about is gossip. He may have framed it in a strange way but the point was to nip the whole line of questioning associated with that question in the bud. It’s not that he didn’t want to answer a straight yes or no (which I’m sure he’d done at some point btw), it was that he knew if he answered it, that would open up the floodgates of questions like: ‘what did Tom think about it?’ Or ‘how did that affect your relationship’? Which PTA considered personal and would not have wanted to answer (for obvious reasons).
