Paul Williams, Sr., was the original lead singer of The Temptations. In November, 1965 the "Temptin' Temptations" album was released. On that album was "Don't Look Back" by The Temptations, led by Paul. On November 19, 1967 they appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show where Paul and The Temptations sang that song. Paul Williams, Jr., is part of Dennis Edwards' Temptations Revue, where he is honored to sing his father's song. Paul, Sr. sang this song to close The Temptations' concert performances.

It angers me how Paul doesn't get the credit he really deserves. Props always go to David, Eddie & Dennis. People don't realize Paul vocal range was amazing, he could take his voice damn near low as Melvin's & take it in the range of David's & Dennis. Not to mention he was the best dancer the Tempts ever had.
@thewordkeeper
@thewordkeeper 8 жыл бұрын
Yes and I know you are aware that before David's many leads Paul sang lead on most of the songs. I still dig the way Otis and Melvin starts out and Paul takes over on Check Yourself; and Paul leading on Your Wonderful Love and his shared lead with Eddie on Farewell My Love.
@GarwinWayne

thewordkeeper Very much aware Paul was the core lead vocalist of the group from 1961 to 1963. Check Yourself, Oh Mother of Mine, Slow Down Heart were all great. I Want a Love I Can See & Don't Look Back of course were his signature tunes.

It is frustrating, at best, to me that Paul doesn't seem to get that credit/people don't seem to know and make the distinction w/ his unique talent. The depth-in skill set&to what all that range covered. He had had&brought so much more than I think Motown either knew or let him express. Glimpses. I don't think how Barry Gordy treated his artists', handled their careers, and ran motown helped any. I don't know how much of it was the staff/crew and songwriters just writing more for Eddie, David, then Dennis. I know they didn't like those 3 to express their own artistry or songwriting-stifled them. I heard that Eddie was the face they felt appealed to young female fans. David was a showman. Paul was just a strong team player who lead silently--effortlessly&not self centered. I believe he cared more about the group than his personal success or fame. Do you think any of those things may factor in at all? Not an excuse b/c I don't think there could be any but it does bother me enough to make me wonder why??? Or is anything logical even?

I don't think people realize how great of an entertainers Paul Williams actually was. He was the original lead singer and also the choreographer. Not only that, his stage presence was awesome. Why he doesn't get the recognition that he deserves is beyond me. The guy was phenomenal.

@@ContrarianExpatriate I HATE when people do that. SICKLE CELL was his biggest problem, which is very likely what led to the drinking. He had SICKLE cell in the 60s. How much research do you think was put into a disease that predominantly affected African Americans in the 60s? Never mind hospitals/ doctors were segregated so what little treatment he got was second rate at best. Many people that drink are self medicating-- and in his case, that makes perfect sense.

I just loved the original Temptations! My favorite song by them "Just My Imagination" Paul sings a small solo part in that song. So very sad how Paul died. I have had 3 very good friends who killed themselves. Two of them hung themselves & the other one shot himself though his heart. It devastated me I keep thinking why wasn't I there when they were in need of help? I talked to one of them & he promised me he would call me if he felt like that again. Well that night he couldn't get a hold of anyone so he left a note. I so wish I could of "got to them." It "drives me crazy" thinking IF ONLY I would of been there at the right time......:(

demarco williams I am sorry for your loss & to see him "do it" in front of u would be horrendous forever planted in your mind. Between my friends killing themselves & the other dying from drug OD's, & car accidents about ready to "lose it." Just this Nov 9 @ 7am (I still even remember the time) some years back my boyfriend got killed in a car accident. He was up all night working on his new blazer had to be somewhere early am put the vehicle in cruise control. Rick fell asleep at the wheel blazer veered off the road into some trees killing him instantaneously. He hit so hard shoved the whole front end up into him crushing him. I about/did have nervous breakdown. I can still see him, hear him, etc. in my dreams. While everyone else "out there" is sleeping I am up crying, which has become a daily "ritual" with all the above & other stuff I have been through. In fact, I have been up now for 2 days/nights with no sleep. I also was on Norco's 10mgs. & Oxycodone 30mgs. Xanax 1mg. & my doctor retired. So I am also going through withdrawals....it's horrible & the "stupid" DEA is shutting down all the doctors who gave "anything" out only ones left won't help me (been so bad) I have been to the ER twice. They refused to give me anything or even help "wean" me down I was on those drugs for 6 years! I am "riding out the storm," which is hell on earth! I am 5'6" tall weigh less than 100lbs cuz of nerves, all the above crap. & just life itself.....I think u know what I mean.

Paul Williams was an integral part of the tempting Temptations. Now,like they said,no one was bigger than the group itself as evidenced by so many members moving in and out of the line up.But he was an original member of the (5) and contributed greatly while in his tenure as a force of the greatest male singing unit in the history of RNB and Soul music. Hats off to one heck of a vocalist Paul Williams.

I’m so glad Dennis Edwards brought this group out featuring Paul Williams Jr singing along with his father the great Paul Williams.. Dennis always seem to honor David for his contribution to the Temptations, but Dennis sung on most their big hits from late 60’s to late 70’s. He had that preacher like voice that just woke you up and then on song for you he made you feel that it.. When came aboard everyone grew that natural and don’t who the Temptations barber was but they were on point.. I listen to Dennis during my college days especially the Alpha House at Oklahoma University January 1975 .. Living in a Glasshouse don’t throw no stones.. He sung on more hits than any other lead singer for them, so to me he’s earned his place in history.. and when he came out with this group they were really good.. Rest In Peace Dennis I would never heard about Paul Williams.. LB October 2021

It would be nice to see the footsteps of Jr doing the footsteps of Dad on this song. Dad could move. Talent gone too soon. Senior had the moves......Junior doesn't. .....at least not in this video. But I'll give credit to Junior, he can sing.....what a legacy to live up to.....I would not want to be in Junior's shoes. Paul Jr, you have amazing talent, just like your Dad. No one can take that from you..remember that.
