I was just reading a book with a section on gothic scripts such as textualis quadrata. I admire your ability to illustrate examples and differences off the cuff so to speak. Thank you for the video and the inspiration. After looking at the book, I was too intimidated to even make an attempt to learn. This helped.

Absolutely stunning insight into your personal world of thinking and categorizing scripts. As a graphic-designer I dig this absolutely because your arguments and standards come from a logical side to develop writing in a simple yet constructive and orderly manner. That's the way to bring the craft forward.

This was much needed. I totally agree with the confusion of fonts. I can’t tell you many hours I’ve spent going through books and books looking for common script and even though they call them the same they are always different. It makes it hard for a student to find the fundamentals and build from there instead of starting with a style that is already modified from the original. A video in copperplate/engrossed/Spencerian would also be great (and sure to spark some controversy)! Thanks Paul! All the best in your teaching to come and if ever in callifornia let SoCal calligraphers guild know!

Jusangen thanks for your comment. By fonts I am assuming you are referring to scripts? Palaeography is a bit of a mind field. Knowing what names to take on board I feel has to do with a knowledge of the tools and marks made to make the letters. A comprehensive guide is needed with supporting names and alphabets. The only problem is by doing so, you give someone a ready supply of letters to scan to make fonts.

Ah I see. That is the two edge sword of KZbin I guess-the ability to bring tremendous value, but then probably having that value cheapened. Oh well, I still want more videos! Best.

I'm a stickler for artistically produced aesthetic letters. Aren't all calligraphers? I was quite hesitant to watch this video, but the previous video I watched, you demonstrated the whole alphabet of the Textura script, quite admirably to your students. I'm glad I did not skip your discourse on a point. I always understood the script to be Textura and never did catch why sometimes there was a protruding corner and sometimes not and then some. Now when I write and choose, a sort of palliative unction calms my prior confused mind. I hope you can do the same for the other scripts.

In my research, I've only come across four categories of Gothic scripts: Textualis Quadrata, Textualis Semi-Quadrata, Textualis Prescissa and Rotunda. I had been led to believe that Schwabacher was a German specific bastard script, and that Fraktur was a renaissance Germanic evolution (from Schwabacher) and therefore not strictly used during the gothic period. And Bastard scripts varied so much over time and over different regions, that it seems redundant to lump them all in to one category? My source for this information is Michelle P. Brown, and a kind man from Reddit who explained it all to me :) - I would be interested to hear yous (or anyones) thoughts. Great video by the way, thank you!
@PAScribe3 жыл бұрын
Schwabacher and Fraktur are entirely distinct scripts. Try Derolez “gothic palaeography” if you really want to delve into the gothic scripts. They are definitely more than 4 families

When I write with the speedball nib, my first stroke leaks ink. I hold my pen vertically and so my question is. Is it necessary to write on an angled table such as a 45degree.
@PAScribe6 жыл бұрын
it sounds like you have too much ink on the nib. Wipe the top side before going to the paper. An angled board helps as well.

Hey Paul, Now do to join the community that you work with on your videos?
@PAScribe6 жыл бұрын
you can join the Facebook Group PAScribe Calligraphy Classes - you will only be able to post work pertaining to what you have studied in a class with me or if you are working from the manual. Anything else will be deleted. Those are the restrictions of the group as I have no time to teach info I give in a class. You will no doubt learn by the interactions with those who are taking the year-long Gothic Scripts class. Hope that helps

Question, your ink is pooling without bleeding into the paper, is it your choice of ink type or paper type, or a combination of the 2? I use a heavy paper with pilot parallel still find it too wet.... suggestions? Or videos?
@PAScribe Жыл бұрын
The pilot parallel pen ink is not very good. Drain the cartridge and use a fountain pen ink like Pelikan 4001 or Monteverde Ink. It is always about the nib-ink-paper interaction. It is never about one thing, always the three of them
