I'm always on the hunt for cheap guitars. Usually nothing over $100. Usually Squier Strats that I string up in weird ways. But also I like to use them for pop and funk tracks. It could be that you are not really familiar with SG sound and was just expecting something else? This was kind of my experience with Les Paul Studio Plus, I always thought I wanted this guitar because of Jimi Page and jus the looks, but after I finally got it and played it for a few years I ended up selling it, because the sound was underwhelming to me, especially the clean tones were too muffled for my taste. I later realized that even though I loved the look of LP, it was actually the sound of a strat, the single coil spank and sparkle that I really wanted. So I went on and bought a MIJ Fender Strat HSS, and this is the guitar I've been enjoying playing any time for the past 8 years. So, are you sure it wansn't just the looks that made you chose SG?

When I was studying music in the late nineties/early two thousands, we had a Yamaha Pacifica in the classroom, which was the "bash it about and play whatever" guitar. The thing really was a beast for low money and despite never having owned one, I've always had a soft spot for them. It really felt and sounded just like your video here has portrayed it. Not a perfect, beautiful, classic instrument, but one which has many depths and talents for an incredibly low sum of money. I have a Les Paul and a Strat, and many other guitars, but I would actually really like to own a Pacifica for it's jack-of-all-trades simplicity and versatility.

Paul, I've been playing for almost three decades and this video brought me back to my teens when I was trying to find the best guitar for what little pocket money or (after getting a job) what little money I had earned that I could afford to spend on another guitar. Even as an early teen in the mid-'90s I loved the Yamaha Pacifica. Watching this video made me realize how much that model has stood the test of time as a great begin-termediate guitar. I'm certain they don't make this model any more, but if I had an Ibanez that would change your mind, it would be the GAX70. I ended up slapping a Seymour Duncan JB in the bridge and for $210 invested that was my primary gigging and recording guitar for several years. I have a tendency to sit in a guitar shop for a couple hours testing out several guitars when I am intent on purchasing one and I never come out with the model I was looking for 😆 the Ibanez was one of those experiences. Thin neck that played like butter, intonation was perfect, and even though I went in there intent on buying a $500 guitar, I ended up with that $150 "starter guitar." There's gold to be found. Great video!

Great video Paul! Its good to see a side by side comparison of all these lower end guitars, and it's terrific that you're donating them all. I personally think that most guitars with a proper setup and a decent sounding amp is all you need. I own a few of these guitars and have mixed opinions of each. A guitar that feels good in the hand and is comfortable to play will motivate more practice from my experience. The reason I own many of these guitars as a seasoned player is because these guitars provide a solid base for upgrades and modding to make them a terrific guitar for a fraction of the cost of a high end guitar. A $200 guitar with $200 pickup swap creates an animal that would cost thousands from a manufacturer! Anyways, love the channel and keep on rocking my friend!

I tried out a used epiphone sg, but i think its an older version sg 400. Messing around with the 4 knobs and switch, it surprised me when it gave the guitar a nice low tone. Just a lot more versatile than the ones with just 2 knobs. And the design allows for playing super easy on the frets close to the body. I picked up an old Yamaha Pacifica for $50 and honestly I've been blown away by how well it plays for the price. Interestingly mine is quite light. The pickups sound decent but holy smokes the setup is awesome, not sure if the previous owner set it up, and the neck is just really fun and fast. First of all, the experience of being in a guitar store exploring everything is a cool thing and also all the people working there I've met really know their stuff and can give you good advice on how to get started. The most important thing is that the guitars are properly set up by someone who knows what they're doing (eg. not me)!

Paul, incredible review. I’ve been playing my Harley Benton TE-52 (50s Tele copy) for about 2 years now, and I’ve had nothing but good things to say about it. Totally could’ve kept playing it stock, but I replaced the steel bridge with a brass saddle one, and replaced the knockoff vintage tuners with Fender modern locking, and it’s become my #1 guitar. I think Harley Benton puts out some really high quality products for the money, and maybe give them another shot in another video 👍🏻

I bought the SG One displayed in the video. First of all it has a great feel to it and is perfect for beginners. One major problem was that my Low E string would bounce off of the fret board of I were to strum it would cause a very metallic noise. Also, the amp plug in broke and I had to rearrange the electronics inside to allow it to connect to a amp. Overall, it’s a great guitar however there can be a lot of problems and I recommend saving your money to get a better guitar.

The Squier 51 was a very good budget instrument. It is a shame that they aren't made anymore. I also have good experience with the Affinity Stratocaster. It worked very good out of the box, and with some simple mods it is great. I also have an old Standard Stratocaster that I have owned for 17 years that I keep going back to. It was also very good out of the box, and great with some simple mods. The Vintage Modified and Classic Vibe series are more expensive, but also well worth the money. I once tried a Classic Vibe that I liked better than several Fenders I have tried. Squier has become a very good budget brand. Especially the ones that are manufactured in Indonesia seems to have a very consistent quality to them.

While I'm not in the market for a budget guitar, I still really enjoyed this overview, Paul! It's great to see how much the overall quality of lower-end guitars has improved in the past 20 years. I think one thing to consider is that differences between individual guitars of the same model might also range a lot. Your HB-35 arrived defective, the next one might be okay and another customer might receive an exceptional one (for what it is). This is all understandable because this happens with instruments that are manufactured with so much cost-saving in mind, but on the other hand this is a real dilemma since these instruments are targeted at beginners who might not be able to compare different guitars or just lack the experience to spot the best one of the bunch that is presented to them.

Im interested in this for acoustic guitars (both classical and western), especially at the price point of around $500-$700, as this is the amount of money that a player who is exiting beginner waters is usually willing to spend, but there is so much noise in this price category... you could get a Mexican Martin with plastic back and sides (even though they say its high pressure laminate, which seems to be a lie), or some all solid wood eastern guitar, but the solid wood doesn't guarantee that it will sound better than the Martin... so yeah, this category would be very interesting

Let me begin by saying that I am a beginner, but I recently bought a HB ST-62 and I absolutely love it. I have two sons, one who has the Yamaha and the other who has the Squier. We all agree that my HB is the best of the three by far. I am in the states so I had to shell out an additional $80 for shipping and handling, so it brought the price to around the same as my sons. The neck is wider (flatter) and this makes it easier for me, but I have big hands. I have no issue with bar chords, etc. All of our guitars came ready to play, no setup issues at all, although I did have to tighten a few bridge screws. My son's Squier had more quality issues with sharper frets, etc. We bought it from Sweetwater, so that might be why his was ready to go. My HB seems more comparable with the Squier Classic Vibe that I play sometimes (not mine). It is a fantastic guitar that I would gladly buy again.

Been playing guitar for many years, and since 2011 I own a Yamaha Pacifica as my only electric guitar. I can't compare it with any other but from my perspective I almost never felt that I needed a complementary guitar with different pickup set up or anything like that. I think that with the Pacifica you can't go wrong if you want a versatile guitar. Also worth to say that I've never done any mod or repair on it, because it is very well builded and all the parts in my opinion seem of good quality.

From my experience, low-end guitars are most prone to 1) inconsistent factory QC, so it's possible that you find a total gem but many are lackluster and 2) bad durability. I started on a Squier Bullet Strat back in the day and it sounded fine for a year of garage band rehearsals but then it just started falling apart. I think people will play a $200 and a $2000 guitar in the store and wonder why they sound so similar but don't think about how they will stand the test of time. That being said, most people who pick up a $200 guitar probably aren't too concerned with issues like intonation in the high frets, they just want something to play!
@spottedsaint9572 жыл бұрын
I paid $60 for my Squier Bullet Strat at the local pawnshop and it was about ten years old when I bought it a couple years ago. I added a new tremolo block and springs to it and I also had the knobs, pickup covers and pickgaurd swapped out. The mods weren't absolutely necessary but they definitely improved the looks and the tone of the guitar. I gave it to a friend of mine and he added locking tuning machines to it ,so needless to say between the two of us we've exceeded the value of the guitar ,but it was fun! Would I do it again, well I've a Squier Affinity Telecaster that I've been doing mods to, and it's an ongoing project. I think the Squier Affinity Telecasters are very solidly built guitars and have no question about whether they'll hold up or not. Even if they don't, replacing them won't cost too much. Mine was $175 used.

Interesting video, which highlights some of the issues to look out for when buying a guitar. Variability of quality is what cheap guitars are renowned for. If you did this comparison 10 times, with exactly the same makes and models but different guitars each time, then I reckon the ranking list would change every time. It highlights the importance of playing a guitar before you buy it.
