MRE. Deadliest weapon in the American arsenal. Has killed more than any weapon since the K-Ration. I can only hope we abandoned a few million halal versions in Afghanistan. In defense of American rations all I can say is that my Dad grew up poor in the Depression, joined the Army at 17 and served during the end of WWII. He told me he actually gained significant height, muscle mass and weight on Army food and liked C-Rations. He'd never had enough to eat before. Grandma only knew how to cook tripe and other internal organs, known as offal and sweetbreads, as that is all that was available when she was growing up in Ireland, along with the occasional potato, cabbage, onion and carrot. Honest review. Seems like the products are "good enough". The issue is that they have to be palatable to a wide range of tasters. The fact that the eggs were decent is a good sign. And as always, it tastes better if you are hungry!
@audiotyresup3 жыл бұрын
If it's what is available, you can be picky and go forage wild fruits, berries, roots, fungi, leaves, moss, etc. until you get enough to survive on, including making up for all the energy spent foraging. But thankfully there's now so many of these survival food brands you can go for what your pallet likes best for your survival stock. But I'd say, if you have all these cans, boxes, and bags of stuff you have to cook, not what I'd call survival food. An MRE takes up much less space, and may have more calories by volume thane these survival foods. Only thing I seen that could beat the MRE in calories to volume was this large block of a dense nutrition mix sectioned into cubes, each cube about half the size of your fist and supposed to be, if I recall correctly, 1 days ration, or maybe half day per cube. Contemplated getting one to see if that would even taste good for an extreme rations bar.

Except for instant ramen. That seasoning packet is crazy! But this is a good point. Any prep should include a lot of salt and pepper, and a good amount of spices. They tend to keep a long time, and with a little seasoning and spice you can make crap food taste appetizing. Having salt on hand should be a no brainer for anybody who does any prepping at all. It's necessary for life, and it makes food taste good! Plus you can use it for preserving foraged and/or game foods.

My experience with egg powder: Whip, whip, and whip some more when mixing. A fork helps - the more air that can be incorporated into the mix, the lighter and fluffier the resulting scrambled eggs will be. Its also suggested to add a touch of powdered milk to it when mixing up the powder. It cooks up reasonably well, as normal scrambled eggs. I add rehydrated freeze dried sausage & onion to it, a packet of hot sauce, and wrap in a tortilla for a breakfast burrito. For anything oatmeal like: Just get your favorite brand of instant oatmeal packets and slip them, unopened, into a freezer grade zip top bag. It'll cost less and be comparable packaging. As for nutrition / fortified: Another solution to this is a simple, cheap, house brand multi-vitamin. Having seasonings like salt, pepper, pepper flakes, hot sauce, etc goes a long way toward making otherwise "meh" food more palatable. The Venn diagram between long distance hiker food (PCT, AT, etc) and survival food has a lot of overlap.

Gordon Ramsay...yeah, the know-it-all chef...he makes his scrambled eggs with water. That is lame. Cream or milk is the only way to go and you are right about using a fork.
@kevincrosby17603 жыл бұрын
I used to split pre-packaged items into separate meals and then vacuum seal them with an oxygen getter. For instance, your example would find individual portioned packages of dried eggs and milk, FD sausage and onion, a few hot sauce packs and a handful of the little paper salt and pepper packets all packed with an oxygen getter into one bag and vacuum sealed. Something like a boxed noodle side would get the box contents dumped into a bag along with a sealed package of dried milk and the cut-out section of the box containing the prep instructions, then vacuum sealed. I know it sounds like a lot of extra work, but I subscribe to the "slightly paranoid but shit DOES happen" method of camping. If I am planning on being in the woods for 3 days in the middle of the summer, I will try to pack food and water for 5 days...and at least a blanket and a set of long johns in addition to summer clothing. Shit happens. In theory, I could drive off right now without packing anything and be gone for a few days...If I really wanted to spend a few days under a tarp wrapped in a mylar blanket drinking water out of pouches and eating lifeboat rations. ALL of my vehicles have basic 72-hr kits, extra water, a blanket or two, etc. rattling around under seats, in the trunk, etc. Again, shit happens...so does drifting snow.

@@boots7859, easy. Add a pinch of salt while reconstituting it. It won’t make it taste like normal food but it’ll make it less bland.
@petervitkov3613 жыл бұрын
Only Paul Harrell sometimes uses margarine instead of raging on about how he hates it and it's an inferior product to butter. That's my only gripe with Chef Jean-Pierre and a huge pet peeve I have with people in general, especially cooks. If you don't like margarine, that's your preference - you're not any more professional or a better person for hating on it. Personally, if it's for cooking, sure, I use butter, but if it's for buttering toast and putting something ON it - a slice of pastrami, black caviar, etc., I prefer margarine. It's all about the taste. Margarine tastes like vegetable oil in buttery form, whereas butter...tastes like milk, and that slightly sweet, milky flavor really doesn't work with meat and salty stuff in general, in my opinion. When you, say, fry something with butter, that taste is nullified, especially when you use seasoning.

It looks like this line up was designed for a very specific type of "survival" in mind. Big cans of freeze dried food are good for stashing and long term living off the grid. As Paul mentioned, you need a lot of equipment to prepare this food, so it seems the best use will be as an emergency food bank somewhere in a cabin away from civilization. You can probably "survive" a couple of month if you prepared enough food like that.

I always found egg powders to have the wrong texture. It's good to hear that their eggs aren't that way and actually taste/feel like eggs. Also good to know that, besides some blandness, most of their stuff is pretty alright. Maybe not the best if you have better ingredients around, but you sure won't starve nor will you be miserable.
