Using AI to Fight Climate Change, Propaganda, Misinformation, and Election Tampering
On Monday last week the stock markets crashed, led by huge drops in Artificial Intelligence (AI) tech stocks. The reason was the release of a new AI called DeepSeek by the Chinese startup company also called DeepSeek.
What was so revolutionary about this new AI?
It was better than anything out there, it was free, and it displayed its thought processes and decision making, and it was Open Source.
Even more surprising it was using old, crappy NVIDEA chips and other older hardware, since the US had export restrictions on the latest and greatest hardware used by huge US companies in their own AI systems.
I actually worked previously on computer graphics chips and graphics cards for ATI Technologies, who had the best Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) at the time compared to their main competitor, a little company called NVIDEA that you may have heard of. These NVIDEA GPU's today form the heard of the nodes (neuron simulators) in todays AI.
After I left ATI and moved to Ottawa, I worked in telecommunications for JDS Uniphase on optical switches for fiber optic telecommunication systems. These optical switches and high speed fiber optic cables now act to connect the GPU's in the most advanced AI systems today.
I discuss this and much more in my talk from a week ago to the Canadian Association of the Club of Rome (CACOR).
On the Monday evening of the AI stock crash, I was asked to speak on Wednesday afternoon on any topic I wanted due to a CACOR speaker cancellation.
