I cracked up hearing your dad would have a cigarette hanging out of his mouth while shaving. The finesse of smokers to smoke while doing other things makes me chuckle. Setting aside the health issues for a moment please, some smokers are very skilled at their art.

Your video got me thinking about my own shaving journey. I'm almost 70 and when I started shaving (in the 1970s) I went with a "modern" choice, a Shick injectable. At some point, I switched to the disposable Gillette "Good News" razors, and then a series of cartridge razors. I was constantly buying new systems because I could never remember what version I had when I had to buy refills. It was at that point, over 15 years ago, that I made the switch to traditional DE razors, and I haven't looked back. I have gone from the hobby to the task, to the hobby, and back again. However, no matter how I approached shaving I knew that the DE option was the better option. I'm now back into the hobby and I'm enjoying the fun of trying out new soaps and razor blades. But, that is not why I'm writing this comment. Growing up in the 1960s, we lived in a pretty run-down house that was built in the 1920s. I don't think the bathroom was ever updated. The sink hung on the wall and was made of heavy cast iron. The porcelain finish had long ago lost its glaze and cleaning it involved polishing it with powdered cleanser to a dull soap-scum-free finish. The tap wasn't mixing, there was a hot faucet and a cold faucet. If you wanted to wash your hands you ran both taps and quickly moved them from scalding hot to freezing cold water and back again. A bar of soap sat in a plastic soap dish. the dish had two pieces to allow the soap to drain, but with 7 people using one bathroom, the soap always seemed soggy on the bottom. If you wanted to do any serious type of wash-up you put a white rubber stopper in the sink and filled the bowl. Our tub was equally worn, and there was no shower or fancy tiles on the wall. Let's not even talk about the spitting toilet. Somehow, we survived. I don't have a lot of great memories of my dad, but for whatever reason watching him shave was one of them. I don't think he shaved every day, probably a few times a week, and certainly for church on Sunday. He would usually shave in his boxers and an old-style tank top undershirt. He would fill the sink with mostly hot water and add just enough cold to make it tolerable to wash his face. I can't say for sure what razor he used, but I do remember that it was a butterfly type, so it was likely a Gillette Super Speed. I'm certain that it was the most basic, nothing fancy. I think he used Wilkinson blades, but I also remember him using off-brands like Walgreens (a pharmacy/chemist brand). Foam came out of a can and the brand would vary based on sales. I remember Barbasol and Walgreens shaving foam, but I'm sure he used others. I absolutely loved the smell of the shaving foam. It smelled so clean and masculine to me. I was very young when I watched my dad shave and in those days he was an imposing figure who I thought could do anything. I worried that I could never be as strong or successful as he was. Shaving for him was a chore and strictly business. I would be amazed to watch him quickly move the Super Speed around his face. I don't remember a "second pass," but I do seem to recall him squirting an extra dollop of foam and rubbing it in areas that needed a little extra work. After a rinse, he would always rub his face for a final check. On special days (like when he was going to the union hall) he would splash on some Mennen aftershave, which I thought was the finest cologne on the planet. I'm a daily cologne wearer and I honestly think I would wear that scent if it lasted more than 10 minutes on me. On occasion, he would change out the blade and toss the old one in a "secret slot" built into the medicine cabinet. I think the old blades just fell between the joists in the wall I would imagine all of the blades there and even fantasized that I could somehow retrieve and resell them (you have to remember I was a small child). I don't think that he talked to me, but he did allow me to sit on the toilet seat and watch him. The smell of commercial shaving foams and Mennen aftershave flood me with pleasant memories to this very day. Now, I have a family of my own and I live in a house that is about three times the size of the one I grew up in. My bathrooms are fancy. My toilets don't spit. I wonder what memories my kids will have of me, but I can assure you that I have made many efforts to be there for them. I can buy whatever soap or razor blades that I want. I don't have to think about the cost. Life is good and I am happy. My dad is long gone, but I wonder what would think of his son. The one who worked hard, went to med school, tried to make the lives of others better... and is now retired and reflecting on his own life. Somehow, that thought puts a smile on my face. It is easy for me to remember some less-than-joyful memories of my dad, but your video reminded me of some happy ones. Thanks so much.

My dad taught me how to shave with a double edge razor. He was an Old Navy guy and always shaved with this type of Razor. I'm 60 years old now and I've been shaving with a double edge razor for about a year. I now have 17 brand new double edge razors, from different manufacturers, 3 Gillette Fat Boys, 1D4 and 2 E4's, Plus a variety of soaps, creams, and assorted razor accessories. I am deep down the rabbit hole and I absolutely love it. Maybe I should start making some videos.

My dad wasn't a shaver, he had a beard for his whole life and I never saw him clean shaven, ever. When he would shave, it would just be a trim with an electric razor. My grandpa, however, definitely did shave because when he passed away, I remember I got his bottle of Old Spice which was at the time still being made in glass bottles. So for me, shaving, grooming and style and all of that stuff is something that reminds me a lot of my grandpa. This is great btw, love that you have those memories and that you almost get to relive them with these products. Our olfactory senses are so strong that when you smell an aftershave or a shave soap or a cologne, it's almost like a time capsule, it brings us back to a time and place and it usually feels great.

It’s funny what we remember about our parents. My old man used to shave with a Gillette Atra and Noxema soap. Looking back it sounds terrible! But that’s what he did. I don’t remember him teaching me to shave with that, because I couldn’t grow a whisker if I tried back then. I learned to shave in the Marines, and still couldn’t grow a beard, but it didn’t stop them from terrorizing you if you missed a spot every morning!

My father passed away 3 years ago from Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) His equipment was - Kolynos Shaving Cream(Greek cream, you may not familiar with) - Cheap Plastic Handle DE razor WITHOUT any guard or baseplate on it. - NO aftershave or cream NEVER. "If it hurts, it hurts" - Cheap synthetic brush. His equipment was these products only, not even close to my collection of soaps and razors, but the shaving was every time deep and perfect. As you said no 3 pass shaving. Only one pass ATG and he was shaving EVERY MORNING. Never left any grain on his face. Still remember him to tighten the skin and the smell of the cream was all over the place, even after shaving. I remember once cutting himself deeply in the chin because he was on a hurry, the wound needed many stitches after that. No shouts, no screams. Nothing. Great Paul, just great. Good memories. Thank you for that. PS : Oh yes, I forgot the Marlboro 100's in the astray next to him while shaving... :-(

My dad was a minimalist in passes and equipment ... I watched him when I was very young (early 1950's) it was one pass ... And his shave gear was a Gillette gold razor of some type but it was tarnished to a copper color ... A bowl a puck and a brush with a plain wood handle uncolored, and of course his little metal packet of Gillette blades with a picture of King Gillette on the front ... He was a printer and this morning exercise was a simple morning chore just like brushing your teeth ... He was a Printer by trade so appearance wasn't a big thing ... Thanks for the video ...

My dear Paul. I shave daily, really for work's sake perhaps. But I love the shave, though razor-wise I only use the adjustable Rockwell 6C, my variety of enjoyment comes in the various soaps, the array of aromas, and the happiness of my skin is really experienced after the aftershaves and copious amounts of facial lotion. For day-to-day, like your father, I only do a two-pass shave, the first with the grain, the second cross-grain. For me, it isn't just a chore, it is enjoyable. Shaving is a great hobby, an experience I look forward to, before I must go to work. When I miss my shave, because I'm rushed or time is short, my skin feels unloved, and I personally feel like I've not appreciated myself as an honest man, as I've should.

Ah Nostalgia, it warms the heart! Great video Paul! I grew up in the 80's with the Philishave revolution but remember my Grandad shaving. He always used a 7 O'clock blade, brush and Old Spice. That's all I can remember as well as the odd face full of rollie paper! I know here in Ireland, Belfast anyhow they called it a wobbling brush as opposed to a shaving brush.

Excellent reminiscence and tribute, encapsulated in a superb presentation. Viewing this video 3 1/2 years on, amongst contemporary aftershaves were Mennen (already mentioned) is Tabac. A Wilkinson beautiful TTO of the same era was the 'sticky' razor.

Nice video, thanks! I remember quite the same setup with cigarettes and all. Quick shaving, no proper razor or brush cleaning and pieces of toilet paper in the face. The most amazing thing was the using of handsoap for lathering. That must have dried the skin like anything!

Good memories thinking back to that time Paul. It was certainly hard for some, we never had indoor plumbing the entire time I lived at home. Few of that era still had an outdoor toilet, which was wicked in the severe cold of Upper Michigan winters! Hard frost yesterday morning, but with the unseasonably warm September our leaves still don't have much color. Mrs. H captured the best of autumn with her arraignment! Take care, Ossie

It was Ossie, we had an outside toilet, coal house, which in later years became part of a larger kitchen area, no heating either when we were young, remember seeing ice on the inside of the window glass...lol...I bet the winters were much worse over there...colour starting to change here and dropping to the ground, regards to you and Mrs W and thanks .....Paul.

Thanks Paul. I remember my father using a Gillette twist to open. I would so much love to have that razor but imagine we tossed it when we cleaned out his home. I remember a brush and he used bar soap. Probably Ivory soap. The only soap my mother would use for her delicate children. I also remember aqua velva aftershave. And of course, he came to the breakfast table with toilet paper pieces gracing his face. Oh, the memories........

Paul, thank you for the memories. It reminds me so much of growing up and watching my dad shave that way. No brush, though, just a can of Gillette Foamy or Barbasol. It's the way I started shaving as well, before I left it for multi-bladed wonders from Gillette. Years (decades!) later I 're-discovered' wet shaving, and love my shaves. I always enjoy watching you enjoy yours as well.

Hi Paul. Great video. Absolutely loved it!!! My Dad too, shaved exactly this way too. I did this shave myself today but used the Palmolive shave cream and had a great shave. I did add a drop of tea tree oil and lavender oil and got an amazing lather and had a great shave. Thanks loads too, for sharing the memories of your Father on a Sunday. Really appreciate that!

My Dad shaved with a TTO razor, wilkinson sword blades, and either palmolive stick or imperial leather bar soap lather as best it would. Two pass up and down applying toilet paper to cuts...leave it in place for a few minutes then remove. He never used aftershave or shave balm.

Good video, that is the same as my father did, when i saw this i did remember, he smoked cigarettes since he was 15 years old, living much alone since his father passed away in 1965, and his mother was hit buy a car and in a home. He used rizzla also. He is still alive 🙏 and he does not smoke cigarettes any more, only chewless tobacco. I gave him my merkur hd but does not use it, only a electric razor. 😊 he worked in the same firm for 45 years, sitting at desk mounting fire alarms and such. For hospitals, hotells ships and such

Nice shave Paul. My dad doesn't wet shave and taught me with a disposable bic razor. It used to be miserable shaving. I actually installed internet service for a barber shop ( what I do for work ) and found he does straight razor shaves like old times and that's how I got hooked. Thanks for doing this shave, Paul. When my dad taught me to shave, it was just, lather, shave downward, lather, shave upward, move on with your day. I went back to that shave style a while ago, and it actually led me to change my ways a little. I found that I could get almost as good a shave as with 3 formal passes. I worked some of the things I found out into my new "normal" shave, and it's worked great. I still find that a cross-grain pass and some pickups help get a really close shave, but I eliminated one of my cross grain passes, as it seems to have little or no impact.

My Grandad used those razors and Gillette 7 o clock shadow blades with the shaving stick , Erasmic soap or the Palmolive, and the smell of bay rum , his shaving brush was that old he had hardly any hairs on it , I still use Old spice nice clean smell to it , another soap he used was lifebuoy red carbolic another clean smell , happy memories Paul , cheers mate .

Overflow comment: I think that some of the mild razors of the day also allowed that sort of haphazard speed. I can get away with a lot with a Superspeed or a Knack (American version of the Slim Twist) that you wouldn't dare with a Merkur Futur. You can go pretty fast with the blunt interaction point that the vintage TTO razors featured. Finally, glad to hear lashings of gravy haven't gone out of style...

Nice video and very nice that you honor your father . Mine died about 1 year ago at the age of 85 . I have his razor (a Gillette Slim twist ) , his brush and the last shaving cream that he ever bought and at his birthday I used them . As long as we think of them they live among us . People really die when we forget them !

My dad 1960"s Gillette Slim twist , Wilkinson Sword, Barbersol in the can foam. Only one pass WTG , upward on neck and done. No pick up. Thanks for remembering how far we've come. When I was 14 , I started with a Gillette flare tip and a big treat when I got a slim adjustable. Caned foam ...cut my self all the time....

Really enjoyed this Sunday's father's shave, Paul. Got me thinking about my own father. Yep, you guessed it - Old Spice and double edge. He would lather up with a standard hand soap. Yes, we are so spoiled today, with all kinds of artisans soaps and razors of all sorts. Though ironically, one of my favorites still remains the Gillette Slim. Cheers! -Norm

Happy Sunday Paul! I like those flowers; thank you Mrs. H! Yes, I recall the way the wages were handed over to the lady of the house in the UK...and she would give him a few quid to go to the pub. As an American, I was a bit puzzled at this. Every country and locale has unique customs. Like you said, shaving was a necessity and a chore. I bet your Father would think you mad for your collection of shaving products and your enjoyment of the task. My Father shaved in a similar manner, but just on pass. He would draw in his breath as he applied the Old Spice...my Father never cussed or said oaths. Today's dinner: Roasted turkey breasts, whipped potatoes, buttered green beans with bacon bits, gravy, buttered rolls, and a brownie. Lastly, I did finally shaved with the Above the Tie Copper Windsor...smooth and close...BBS! Take care and thank you for this shave Paul!

Hi Paul great shave and flower arrangement. These are the products my dad used also , i use to stand next to him while he was shaving and he always without fail lather my face also , made me feel like an adult even though i was 7 lol . He to would go to the pub with my uncles . When ever i smell old spice it brings me back to our bathroom ,they were truly great days and fantastic memories , habe a good and safe week Paul

Ditto for me as you describe your shaving experiences. I too shave daily. I simply don’t like the unsaved feeling. I put together a 21 day shaving routine of soaps matched to aftershaves so I try to get to them all. I am amazed that some of the most passionate wet shavers only shave every 3rd day or so and not every day. They are the ones with dozens and dozens of shaving products. I would think that shaving daily would help them make it through all their soaps and aftershaves so none go unappreciated.

Yes, it wasn't a big event as we do now, quick and out the door. Paul, if you could on Wednesday, could you show a picture of your dad? He sounds like the kind of man my dad would have liked. Yep! It was a "had to", not a "want to" shave in those days. Sundays took a little longer, I think my mother had something to do with that though. The smell of Mennen Skin Bracer as well as Old Spice comes to mind. Thanks for the trip down memory lane. Wonderful Fall colors Mrs H.

Thanks Paul. My dad was pretty much the same in his routine using a Culmak brush and red tip Gillette rocket and the obligatory Old Spice, at breakneck speed to get to the pub for opening time. I have to say I spent decades following in my fathers footsteps shaving the same way as your demonstration, but as a "modern man" I graduated to a Gillette Contour, canned shave cream and 70s, 80s, 90s aftershaves, but the prep always remained the same.....none! In fact my interest in DE shaving was only reawakened when the market went to 3 or 4 blade cartridges and the sheer cost of replacement. I chuckle now when I think how I have gone full circle when I use my Gillette red tip and splash on some Old Spice. However, I think my dad would have a few choice words to say to me if he could see me using pre shave, witch hazel and balm, I will leave you work out what those choice words would be!!!! Great video Paul. My father shaved very similar to that except he used Gillette Foamy and no brush. He used the DE I still use to this day. E4 silver flair tip. He also used Old Spice. Thanks for the memories. Take care.

Great video Paul very good to see how your father would shave. My father still shaves with a disposable and canned foam, can't sway him to DE unfortunately, he did try my shavette once and ended up with a big slice on the cheek, needless to say he hasn't touched it since. I don't remember how my grandfather used to shave unfortunately, but i do remember he always had brut and old spice on the bathroom cabinet, god bless him.
