@@ForumCat Gilgamesh is a character in a story written a thousand or more years before Judaism. If you read any of those stories and know what's in the bible, you'll see how much was adapted into Judaism. It's a whole lot of reading. Hope you're up for it. Can't wait to see when you read that YHWH is a lesser god and equal to all of the Elohim. That's another conversation but you'll have to make that journey. Funny part is, the bible never says or even implies anything about god respecting free will. Much like the whole "personal relationship with god" thing, it's completely made up and has no basis in the text itself.

It doesn't need to make sense, it just needs to make you emotional and make you believe that you are in danger and you need to defend yourself from the devil, and then they present you the "amazing truth" that there is a divine benevolent being that happens to be your creator and wants to take your side, if you dedicate your entire self to praise him and his unmatched holiness. Praise which includes sending money to the church regularly and doing what the pastor tells you, of course. When people go too emotional, there's a good chance they'll make stupid decisions and they'll be easy to manipulate, and that's the main thing that religions like christianity exploit. I don't have a problem with christians if they don't try to convert everyone and disregard science to fit their believes, but the concept itself is striking my nerves.

Not only does the biblical god not interfere because of free will, but it can’t even show itself because of free will. One must accept the claims of the Bible on faith alone, according to apologists. Yet the Bible itself tells a tale of Saul who became Paul after god invaded Saul’s mind, without him even asking for such a revelation. Self-contradictory much?

While I don’t know every mythos out there I’d say Heracles was the strongest since in one of his labors he held up the sky itself. Also just as a correction Paulogia Heracles was indeed human. He had a human mother. If I do remember right it wasn’t until his 12 labors that he became a god himself (the Greek god of strength or was it heroes if I’m not mistaken)

In the stories, he didn't die from the actual labors; he offered himself on a funeral pyre because he was in pain from tearing his own skin off after his wife smeared hydra-poisoned blood and jizz on his clothes. The reason behind it is actually even worse, but I think YT censors that kind of comment. Anyway, in some versions of the story the pyre burns away the human half, leaving him as a god. Other versions have him being accepted into Olympus after death.

The fear of eternal consequences for finite mistakes was a massive motivator in me preserving my faith for as long as I did. Instilling guilt and fear on people from a young age for absolutely normal behaviors seems like a form of abuse. I was always the rebellious type, so none of the fear. But the guilt did cripple me, and made me do a LOT of wrong life choices just to fit in this group my parents belonged to, and that most of the time saw me as a "freak". Getting rid of the proverbial yoke and the guilt that comes with it has been the most liberating experience in my life. I am now healing and trying to fill in the gaps in my personality that religion robbed me of.

Minor criticism (I'm not aware of ever having a major criticism against you, Paul): the famous "definition of madness" quote attributed to Einstein was never uttered by Einstein in any way, shape or form. Earlier versions have been around for at least a century, but the one made famous was coined in 1983 (28 years after Einstein's death) by queer feminist activist Rita Mae Brown. Something I always found a bit hilarious, considering how many conservatives I have come upon who just LOVE this quote.

No, it's exactly due to that. Notice he asks for only Christians to watch- it's because from a young age they've had the concept of sin as a logical concept hammered into their skulls until they agreed with it. For those of us who grew up outside the church, it's absolutely ridiculous, but any seed planted at a young age is very, very hard to uproot.

As pointed out there is clear concerns about mental health issues from which he described, what is worse is that he is trying to take advantage of people who are in a vulnerable place. I find it deeply troubling that he is able to say this things that can have harmful consequences to people who need help.

From the age of 14, until I stopped following Christ, I would have categorised myself as a Group 3 Sinner. Every single Sunday I thought God was directly talking to me from the pulpit because he was sad that I was continuing to sin. When I finally left the church I'd spent an entire third of my life steeped in overwhelming guilt. What had I been ashamed about? Reading erotic fanfiction. Y'know, that really, really harmful thing that hurts so many people. Oh wait, no it doesn't. Even in the context of the church, it wasn't not as if I wanted extra-marital sex! I wasn't lusting after anyone in real life (at some point I realised it was cos I'm ace XD). It was *fiction*. It didn't include any real people. But no, growing up I'd managed to internalise that anything sexual was wrong and disgusting, so I "knew" that even just reading about it and enjoying the good feelings it sparked without really understanding why, was absolutely wrong and I needed to constantly be praying for help and forgiveness.

It’s important to note his ‘brand’ of Christianity. One that used to identify with. It’s amazing that now that I identify as atheist, I understand better why these destructive behaviours should be avoided. As an example, cheating on my wife ruins many relationships and affects not only my well being but those affected by the betrayal. Adding that a god is hurt by it too and will punish you for it for eternity adds nothing. Is there anything immoral we can do that only has supernatural consequences? Rather than focusing on an abstract manifestation of negative behaviours, it’s so much more constructive to work on bettering our own lives and the live of those around us. Anything else is superfluous. Paul, do you feel more ‘born again’ now or when you were a Christian? Let me guess! Lol Great video

Thanks for responding. I feel the same. I’ve posed the question to myself, have you traded one religion for another? The feelings about truth and the way you see the world (speaking to myself) could you be deceiving yourself the same way you believe you were when you were a Christian. But, just by asking that question, you know it’s different this time. Accepting you could be wrong is something I never considered as a Christian ( until I did lol). Would you feel the same?

Joe is one of the few of these folks who really believes, I think. He does seem to have compassion for us sinners in his horrible zealot way. It doesn't make his message less damaging to some folks and completely un-relatable to the rest of us, though. Joe, you'd be amazed and incredulous to learn that us, mere non-believing mortals, struggle with our own moral compass sometimes and some of us make it a mission to become better humans without the presence of a God. Hubby and I have "what is the right, kind thing to do?" in the back of our minds all the time and I think we do a good job at acting accordingly. No God involved. Oh! and definitely not the devil because we take responsibility for our actions.

Joe defines Sin as having a magical, mystical existence. Actions and thoughts have consequences a person can perceive, perhaps learn from. A Sin might happen that a person is unaware of until judgement. A life of constant anxiety, vigilance, and prayer is therefore required. This is misery and improves no one's life or the lives of those around them. Joe can stuff it up his dramatic, sanctimonious posterior.

It’s the forced “earnestness and thoughtfulness” tone. Preachers talk like that all the time when they’re trying to be deep. People rarely use that tone in real life so unless you’re talking about something that would warrant it, people using that tone often feel forced and off.

The guy gives me the creeps, and I've met an ex-muslim who told me that he was so indoctrinated that he was ready to kill his interpetrator/friend for being a Christian, and now I've never seen him without his Bible... Sort of feel uneasy around the man, but this Kirb guy is something else

What my girlfriend and I did last night was unquestionably sinful. We sinned again this morning and probably will again tonight.

You're right the sin should be a personal struggle, not one with Satan, a character that plays a very minimal role in the Bible, in fact, Job is the only OT book that treats Satan like an actual being, but that is a poem. Otherwise, it's sort of glossed over that Satan made someone do something. I kind of like the interpretation that Satan is the part of ourselves that reject God's commands. It makes more sense too because think about it. Is Satan a threat to you? Do you have anything to worry about if God could easily squash him? But what is something God supposedly has no control over? What's the one thing he can't force into submission? Ourselves. We have the free will to follow or not, and that's the biggest opposition to God as anything can possibly be.

According to the Bible, the worst 'sin' is not believing in God. Happy to sin all day every day.

I noticed in all his talk of Samson that he never mentioned the connection of his Godly strength to his long hair and losing it when he cut it off for Delilah. (Paul did) Now, I am not saying that the man with the receding hairline left that out on purpose, but....

I notice a lot of Christian proselytizing material has this habit of assuming the audience already believes most of what they do already. For instance, this guy assumes I believe in Samson either because I'm already Christian or Jewish or just on his say so.
