Hi Paul. I enjoy your videos very much. I had to stop making drawings and paintings for few months. Today I decided to start again because it gives me so much joy. I'm bit rusty now and feel bit uncomfortable. Your personality and the way you teach makes so much easier for me to come back.

Interesting video and lots of good tips for beginners. One thing I would say is that the position you hold the pencil depends on what type of artist you are and the effect that you want to create. Personally for fine detail or if more pressure is required I find it better to hold the pencil quite near the tip. Apposed to much further away when doing an initial sketch, where a lighter looser touch maybe needed. Also the degree of sharpness is another thing to take into consideration as this will again produce a different effect. Thanks again and hope this is also helpful.

You are right, where you hold the pencil, sharpness etc. effects the way you draw. Holding by the tip tends to restrict the movement and the individuality of the line created. Holding close to the tip is often used by those wishing to copy photos or create photo-realistic drawings, which are often technically very skilled, but lacking in the individuality, which I believe is what art should be about. With beginners, I like to get them away from holding the pencil by the tip. I encourage them to hold it further back, and to use their fingers, wrist and arm to manipulate the line. Therefore, getting a more expressive, individual drawing. But in the end it's up to the individual what they want to do.

Absolutely love your explanation of 'lines' and how expressive they can be. How do you sharpen the pencils, looks like you used a pen knife? Also when drawing or practicing with pencils/graphite, how to keep everything from smudging on the paper? Thank you
@PaulPriestleyart2 жыл бұрын
Yes, I do use a knife to sharpen pencils. It's easy to stop the smudging the trick is not to rest your hand on the paper. You shouldn't need to touch the paper. Cheers

I think I need to buy an easel, it would allow freer movement of the arm, rather than sitting down at the table
@PaulPriestleyart2 жыл бұрын
I think once you start moving your arm your drawing becomes freer and more dramatic. You'll probably enjoy it more too. Cheers

I run two KZbin channels the other is - kzbin.info . I also work entirely on my own, I have no team behind the scenes. I also need time for my own work and I have a life to lead. So it can be a while between videos I'm afraid.
