You must have received special permission to take this ride. The public hasn’t been allowed to ride the bridge ever since the one lady had a particular bad accident on the bridge and in view of the general public several years ago. 😳😳 This is a nice informative video. 😊

Same, I've always wanted to ride it too. I've always imaged the view when it's all the way up was great. never thought of how it look from the counter weight

I've been going to Canal Park ever since I was old enough to drive. Back then I only went during daylight hours because it wasn't quite as sketchy as it was after dark. And I never could figure out how to finagle a way to hitch a trip to the top of the bridge.

Amazing!!! I never really got the size and scale of the bridge from your videos. Fantastic view, would love to see a ship looking down on it from the bridge. May have to have earplugs when the horn goes off. Another great video.

@ Early 70's. They'd put you in a chain link cage built into the lake side sidewalk and lock the gates. The view was fantastic.

@ It covered about 20 ft of the lake side walkway only. This was somewhere in 70 to 72.

Amazing views from up there! Thanks so much for doing this! We have been to Duluth many times in years past, and perhaps it's my hearing, but I've never been able to understand the recording that plays before the bridge starts going up. 😄

As some one who is scared of heights, I felt sick and dizzy as soon as the bridge started to lift.. even though I know Im sat in a comfy office chair.... How wimp like is that!

Friends of mine from NJ had their grandpappy working on putting the bridge up in 1901 I think.

The bridge was built in 1905 and redesigned in 1929.

Wondering how closely the counter weights match bridge weight? Are the cement blocks for fine tuning? If so, does weight change with debris or moisture buildup? Or other related factors?

The bridge span weights about 1,000 tons. The two concrete counterweights weigh about 500 tons each.

When I saw the cement blocks I wondered if they ever tried hitting boats passing underneath. Big lakers would be easy but the little fishing boats would be a challenge. lol

So the control booth is above the roadway if my viewing of your videos is correct. How to the guys and gals that operate it get into it? Show that in another video ASAP. Please.

The control booth is in the center of the structure, looks like a house, there is a stairwell that goes from the roadway up to the control house.

correct! when it stopped, there was a small ladder about 6" you have to climb to get on the structure.
