Shaping any wood has a therapeutic effect on all of us, and this ladle is no different. With the bowl scalloped, we now focus on shaping the handle using tools ranging from flat chisels, saws, card scrapers, and rasps.
Remember, when you're shaping a handle, you use just the same tools and techniques as you would for the neck of cellos, violins, and guitars.
By the time you have shaped your handle, you will feel relaxed and satisfied.

Good to see Paul back doing what he loves. I have to be honest, this project is relaxing to watch but way beyond my abilities (and patience) with shaping tools. So much easier to walk into a shop and buy one but obviously nowhere near as much fun - even if it does go a bit off kilter! I once carved a little boat (to use as an ashtray) from a length of 4x2 with just a block plane and chisel, thinking it would turn out rubbish but it came out good and my partner at the time loved it, so I may have a crack at this one rainy day - or month.

Huh! Putting a block of wood under the handle to support it even though the spoon is in the vice -- so simple and obvious, yet I would never have thought of that myself - thank you.

When you think of the time and energy that goes into the design of custom kitchen cabinetry, one feels the effort was valuable when you think of how a useful layout aids in meal preparation. The same love that shapes handmade utensils also enhances the effort put into meal preparation.

I'm always amazed at the simple techniques I learn from your videos. Today, it was putting a block under the end of a clamped piece that's shifting down under pressure. So simple, and so obvious, yet I never came up with it on my own.

you turned the work around to keep your panel saw on track during a deep cut! What a relief. Ever since you did the plane tote video when you somehow kept the saw on track while sawing from one side only, i have been crestfallen panel saw driver😉

Just bought 2 Millers Falls no 9 hand planes from Facebook Marketplace for $40. They work great. But the thing I did notice on Facebook marketplace, a lot of people are over valuing their hand planes. I seen a few Stanley no 4 and 5 priced at $250 and up. Mind you the handle and knobs are either cracked or chunks are missing. The blades are greatly chipped. The body is covered in rust. Not your normal quick restoration will get the planes into working condition. And the listing would write "price is firm, don't offend me with any offers" 😂

Another perspective is that its 2024, all the mod cons will soon be too expensive for some if not most to buy and yet the skills to use what grows for free have been forgotten.
