The Black race is an abused race that has members that have endured a lot of negative programing about themselves. Much of the very same things ppl in general think of as dysfunctional, is very normal to many Black ppl. A great number of Black ppl are conditioned to believe their own degradation is perfectly normal. Sad isn't it? Just because some Black ppl participate and even seem to enjoy that which degrades and mocks them doesn't mean it's not racist. Those who aren't Black should be firmly against for what they know isn't right, even when they see broken Black ppl who are not empowered to do so.

Well, somebody figure out when the "change" was or how the "change" came about. This episode is from 1971. While I didn't ike token black people in tv shows and movies back then, I've grown to appreciate the effort at least, with Lawrence-Hilton Jacobs, Tim Redi, Ted Lange and Kim Fields (she was the only black child who showed up to audition for Facts of Life), but somewhere since then, there was a slack-off until it became a dropoff. We had the Brat Pack, Beverly Hills 90210, Melrose Place. But at that same moment, there was Oprah, Eddie Murphy, Michael Jordan, Michael Jackson, Prince. So what exactly happened? I wish someone would try to figure out, but I can tell you now, this round didn't start with Emmet Till or Rosa Parks. This is all something else.
@eohaver28 жыл бұрын
This was in your face performance art: the US was just starting to really get how racist and cruel it had been, and by being so blatant, I think it made a point. However, after so many years, its not so funny now. I loved Pat Paulsen (he really did run for President), but even he would know this performance wouldn't work today.
@keithninesling60578 жыл бұрын
+eohaver2 It is still funny, just over the heads of dumbed down Americans. This is humor that serves a social purpose, which is something most people these days wouldn't get because they don't want to face and accept human foibles. They just want to cover them over so no one's poor little feelings get hurt.
@eohaver28 жыл бұрын
It's so over the top, and hilarious while he rips into the different white nationalities, in black face. I agree with you about a dumbed down America; I was reading some statistics the other day, basically that of all the rich Western Nations, the US has a very low educational level, and is known for being....Uhhh.....dumb. Trouble is, I don't think people these days would understand the history of wearing black face, and wouldn't care, and wouldn't even know it was considered insulting to black people.

I wonder if this aired on tv or if the said we are having technical difficulties and didn't show it. I think there would have been big trouble if it aired. I bet Merv got hell for it even though he didn't know what was going to happen.
@PotterPossum19898 жыл бұрын
I dunno, I wasn't born until '89...if Archie Bunker could do blackface on TV, though, I'm sure it was allowed on Merv's show. There are blacks in the audience, if you notice.

+Todd Reeder From what my Internetting tells me, this sketch did NOT air in 1974 for all of the obvious reasons. What a shame. It's hard to pull off political incorrectness so capably without sounding like an asshole.

Brilliant satire. I saw it originally on TV and thought then it was shocking and in-your-face brilliant. Now, years later... it is still cringe worthy and confronts my own thinking about ethnic stereo typing. It is classic shock humor. Pat Paulsen was always cutting edge. Would he do it in 2018? We will never know. I am pleased there is this copy to remind me of my own prejudices, personal growth, the need to continue celebrating the diversity and the inclusion of the human family.
