Wingin’ It! Paul Lucas When will you be flying to Ottawa, Canada (CYOW) ? There are very few international flights to here but it’s an interesting airport as it’s very small considering it’s the airport in the nation’s capital. We still have a few turboprops flying out of here to Toronto and Montreal. Anyway thought you’d be interested! Cheers!

Booked a flight with delta yesterday leaving from Detroit, and got a 717. It all depends on the seat you get whether the experience is good or Sucks. The further back you go, the worse it gets. Maybe I'll be on one of the last ones to fly an MD series plane. My flight back is an A220, which I'm more excited about.

Remembering a fun occurrence with the MD-80 flying out of Dallas DFW to Chicago ORD; American Airlines. Weather in Dallas was horrible, as is typical in the early fall. Massive thunderstorm cells rolled in that evening one right after the other. Our flight had been delayed twice. The original pilot had to be let off as he had exceeded his legal flight time for the day. The replacement pilot had an hour to take off before his legal on-duty time would be exceeded. What we had going for us was the replacement pilot's home was Chicago and he was bound and determined to make it! After counting down for take off position (47th, then 38th, then 25th, and so on), we finally reached 2nd in line just as another violent storm cell was entering the DFW area. Our pilot switched to on-board weather radar and gave us regular updates while reassuring the passengers with statements like; "I flew through much worse in Vietnam", and finally "there's a small window of opportunity showing on our on-board radar - what say ye, yea or nay?" to which the entire cabin erupted in an unmistakable YEA! Given clearance for take-off, the Pratt & Whitney JT-8Ds wound up hard, thrusting us down the runway at breakneck speed. Taking more of the soaked runway than normal with a full and heavy plane, we finally lifted off and the "flying pencil" arched skyward at what seemed like a vertical rate. Climbing through the low-hanging clouds, heavy with rain and electrical charge we all watched as lightning danced in and out of the clouds, reflected in the wet aluminium and light grey paint of the wings. Our pilot came over the intercom and said laughing: "This plane is such a pleasure to fly! Let's go home, people!" Maybe some of us don't like the DC-9/MD-80 family of aircraft, but that pilot sure did. And that beautiful "flying pencil" got us all home safe.

I’ve had the opportunity to ride in First class as well as the jumpseat of the MD-80 series aircraft when commuting to work. So quiet. Conversely, sitting in the back is really loud, so I think the experience varies depending on where you ride. It is an amazing aircraft and the majority of pilots I know who have flown it love it! Awesome aircraft!

I think one of the biggest differences between the -88s and -90s internally is that the 3-2 seat configuration is switched. I've always loved the Maddogs. It's one of the last surviving pieces of a great era of aviation gone by. I'll especially miss the sound of those JT8Ds and the look of the outboard landing lights; there was never mistaking an MD-80 on final!

I had the privilege of flying an MD-88 out of Columbus (KCMH) to Atlanta on the way to Florida on our family vacation. It was easily the best plane I’ve ever flown on, I was really taken aback at how you are thrown back into your seat during the acceleration down the runway and the immediate steep climb that follows. Looking back I wish I had booked one of the other flights on this vacation on an MD-88, but there’s nothing wrong with the 757-200 or the 737-800. Great video, keep up the great work!

I just travelled on Delta's MD-90 and B-717 this past weekend to visit family. I flew from Raleigh-Durham, NC through Atlanta to Melbourne, FL. All flights on an MD-90 and B-717 (Boeing's version after McDonnell-Douglas merger). I forgot about these planes and it was nice and different particularly in the main cabin of the 2 x 3 row seating. You are right that the plane itself was smooth and quiet and the interior refresh of the cabin made it nice despite the lack of seat displays, it was also easy to get on and off them, maybe because of the seating configuration. It will be missed!

I started flying very young and remember both of these airplanes very well and because I was a young single flyer the crew was very attentive to me. For a young flier it was great because it was so quiet and smooth. As I got older I remember a time in high school on a choir tour we were flying the MD90 across country and hit a rather large air pocket and all the other members of the choir who were not use to flying screamed also, when we landed in Richmond, Virginia it was one of the hardest landings I have ever had. My friends from high school swore to never fly again and a few haven’t. Sorry this is so long but I have very fond memories of these air planes.

Like you I loved the DC-9 family, and few on lots of them. Years ago I flew from Seattle to Baltimore on two MD-80-somethings, changing in St Louis. I was slightly startled by the ‘pushback’ procedure: clap out the clamshells and apply full throttle! My last flight in the type was from Zürich to Basel. A wheel had to be changed at ZRH, so in order to connect to my onward flight to Paris I had to sprint across the tarmac in front of a taxiing 737.

I've been flying in these aircraft since they were DC-9s! I've always enjoyed them. Solid, dependable, reliable aircraft. Quiet even in economy with the rear engines. I know that rear engines make maintenance more difficult, compared to engines on under-wing pylons, but they made the aircraft so much quieter. The Vickers VC-10 was another such aircraft: quiet, reliable, fast, comfortable. And both types seemed rather safer than many other models. It is, in a way, sad to record their passing.

One of these MD-80s should go to the Delta Flight Museum in Atlanta! It'd be preserved right by one of its main bases when it was in service, and I'm sure it'd fit right in with the DC-9 they already have there. Speaking of which, the DFM is an absolute must-visit for me, and I'm certainly planning on visiting there from all the way over here in the UK when I can, since the 747-400 prototype is in their collection too.

As a very frequent DL flyer I love the MadDogs, particularly the 88’s. Still catch them frequently out of SRQ. Biggest difference between the 88 and 90 from a passenger perspective is the 90 has different economy seats which I don’t find as comfortable as the 88, and their layouts are reversed from 2-3 to 3-2. The 88’s also have a much brighter blue LED lighting option that can be headache inducing if the FA’s use it in the darker hours.

I've had the pleasure to have flown the MD-80/90 series on both American and Delta over the years. It is quite sad that these planes will not be flying for much longer in the US, I am definitely a big fan of them and will miss them dearly. They have a lot of character that newer aircraft just don’t. All of my flights with Delta were on connections to ATL. As a matter of fact I can even remember flying the MD-80s older brother the DC-9 to and from DTW on Northwest Airlines before they were absorbed by Delta. On American my MD-80 experiences were through ORD or DFW. It really is a shame to see this work horse near the end of its life. Looking out the windows at the airport will become a little less exciting once all these beautiful aircraft have been laid to rest.

I’ve flown the MD-80s and MD-90s extensively in the 1990s and early 2000s on American, Delta and Alaska. The good thing about it had a 2+2 configuration which I really liked over the 3+2 configuration and the aircraft was pretty good. American and Alaska used to have it extensively and this was before American swallowed up Continental and US Air ( which itself swallowed America West). The original American Airlines had predominantly MD Aircraft.

Love them! Have done them on AA, SAS and DAT. Particularly love the rear airstairs in the T tail. And like all Douglas aircraft has a very solid feel about them. Airlines like SAS that updated them kept them looking smart. Give me that over a 737 MAX any day. Particularly with that new lav design you don't even have any bench space on.

I flew MD-80s a lot back in the day when Alaska had many of them in their fleet. For a while they also seemed to be used pretty extensively by Allegiant. They're a gorgeous plane, but it's probably time to pass on the torch.

Honestly I am glad the MD-80s are finally retiring. I flew plenty of them on American, and it always felt like an outdated tin-bucket by the 2000s. Even older 737s or 757s from the 80s felt more comfortable and modern than the MD-80s. To be fair, it's a subjective view, but in the early and mid-2000s I flew a lot of MD-80s due to American's fleet at the time, and when I was in Europe for a bit flying A320s it was a breath of fresh air.

I have flown on the MD 80/90 Series aircraft since their introduction as well as the DC 9, the predecessor of the type. I love them for all the reasons you cited. My major complaint is the poor luggage space, which can’t be helped given the narrow fuselage. The plane is comfortable. It also has been a money maker for airlines such as American.

I had the chance to fly MIA-ATL last week on my way back to Europe. An amazing experience but also a bit sad knowing that's maybe the last flight on the Maddog. Nice fight crew let me take pictures if the cockpit before the flight, which has been quite an interesting one, quite bumpy and skipping storms. Thank you for sharing !

I can understand why people might not like the older aircraft. I hate the 767 and 757 from working with them, but I can appreciate their immense reliability and service life (well, maybe except for the 767s we see which seem to all have _something_ wrong with them, albeit minor)

The DC-9/MD-80/MD-90/B717 is my second favorite family of aircraft behind the L-1011. The MD-11 is just behind the DC-9 family. Aircraft design has gotten so boring. They all look the same these days. I get why but the aforementioned aircraft all had character. The L-1011 is the most beautiful plane to have ever taken to the skies. I regret having not had the pleasure to fly on one. I used to marvel at them out the windows of DFW back in the 90’s.

Another great video from you, Paul! My only gripe is that you don't use SI Units when referring to distances, and such. Most of us around the world, don't use it at all, and are not used to it. It would be great if you added SI Units to your graphics.

Paul, I didn't hear you mention it and not sure if you are aware, the MD80 airport was approved by the FAA for a self-push back in certain airports. This means it uses it's reverse thrusters to reverse at the departure instead of using a pushback tug. When I worked at United Airlines in Boston, I used to come across this happening quite often from AA and DL flights. United didn't have any MD80 flights into or out of Boston. So I never experienced this while working at Logan Airport.

I enjoy Delta’s MadDogs - they have always taken care of them and they are great work horses. I live in Des Moines, Iowa and they are a staple for our route to ATL. Louder in the back but full of character - though freezing when you have to be deiced at 5am. I’ll miss it when it’s gone, though I won’t miss AA’s. Didn’t feel as well treated as Delta’s in my opinion.

Being born into "Scandinavian Airlines"-family I flew all through my minor years on first DC9:s and then the MD80-series. I definitely love them and miss them. Beautiful aircrafts! When they were changed for B737:s it was definitely a down-grade in my opinon.
