Dear Paul...My husband and I were blessed to be able to retire early and we have watched every one of your videos trying to work up the courage to go on a bike tour. I think you finally did it. We can't tell you how much we have enjoyed watching and rewatching your videos. We bought e-bikes in deference to our older knees and hips and have been riding the greenways around town for two years now. We are starting to plan the first real tour. Thank you! Hope to see you on the road. We frequently quote you, "Now go ride your bike."

@@paulsuchecki3985Paul, your channel is probably my single favorite bicycle themed channel. I've been off the bike for waay too long. No health issues (that I know of, anyway) but mostly just fell out of the habit of riding. I'm pretty sure we're about the same age. It's almost entirely mental for me... and a little bit of general fitness. I've been trying to get out and walk to get some of that fitness back, but ngl, it's a challenge. Your storytelling and humor, and humanity are really inspiring. I'm sure I'm not alone in saying, I hope you live forever, man. God bless you.

To Paul, the (bicycle touring) evangelist. Your words remind me a little bit about a different Paul…”I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith”: Thank you for your decades of accrued trail wisdom and experience. And for your kindness in sharing it. Like you said…ride, eat, wash, sleep, repeat. Prolonged bike packing allows us to block out the extraneous distractions around us, reduce life preoccupations (at least temporarily) to only the essentials, become comfortable with discomfort and uncertainty, think and feel deeply, and realize that we can accomplish all things through Christ, who strengthens us. Live life at the speed of bike. God bless from a current bike tourer in Anza Borrego.

You're not a caveman, You are a Nomad. A nomad lives simply, not simply live. You have everything you need to be safe and comfortable. You do not survive, you thrive. You bring what you need and don't count grams. You see no need to drill holes in your toothbrush handle to save weight. You travel at a speed that allows you absorb a wide angle of the horizon. The faster you bike or drive a car, the narrower your field of view and the less you see and observe. Life is not a race for a nomad. They know where they are going because they know where they started. You take care of your body. The nomad lives within the Hoop of life, living a centered existence. Peddle on Oh Nomad. Realizing that there is a tomorrow and there is no reason to race into the sunset.

Way to go! It would definitely be worth looking into getting some 'Pogies' or bar mitts. Mittens can be used if you're super careful but proper pogies certainly offer better and safer operation of the controls! 45nrth make a fantastic pogie called 'Cobrafist'. A thin pair of liner gloves is all you really need in them.

I've been riding year round in the Chicago burbs for about 15 years now. I've learnt a couple of things about cold weather rides. I recommend hand warmers for both your hands and feet. I buy them in bulk but really you only them on really cold days. Low 20s. The warmers are activated by air so at the end of your commute, put them in a ziploc, squeeze out all the air, and you can reuse them. My commute is about 40 minutes one way and usually 1 or 2 sets of hand warmers will last a week. That means you really only need 6-10 packets for a winter since there aren't that many cold weeks. A box is usually 25 packets and lasts me about 3 years.

G'day Paul, loved you're video mate, as you may notice by my greeting, I'm from Australia, just about to turn 65. About 7 years ago I bought a brand new Aussie made Touring bike, it has dyno hub, hydraulic discs and 27 speed gears, front and rear racks like yours and a set of Ortlieb Panniers. Have been wanting to do some bicycle touring for years but always baulk at it as I'm not confident to go too far concerned I wouldn't be able to get back lol. But I've decided this year, I'm going to buy a tent, matt and a couple of bits n pieces and head out with maybe 2 days worth of food just in case I conk out on the side of the road. I also have the issue with sleep apnea too so I have to take a machine camping with me with a portable battery to run it so I may have to take a solar mat with me too and every 3rd night maybe stay in a camping park with power to charge up my batteries. Australia is a huge Country, not much different in size to the USA but a lot of nothing in the middle, no Cities, just red dirt and the occasional roadhouse. I'm also a tortoise, so I enjoyed your reference of Tortoise and Hare. I also ride a motorcycle which I will also use for touring & camping so having the best of both worlds. I don't think i'll be going back to work again....i'm done with that caper!! Looking forward to your next Video Paul.....thankyou for this one....very inspiring.👍

I'm a high school teacher. Usually toward the end of the school year, I have my students help me set up multiple boxes with resupply items I mail to myself, General Delivery, at post offices about a week apart along the route I plan to ride or backpack on my summer adventure. My trips are usually a month long. Many of the students express complete dismay at how I could do such a long adventure, carrying only bicycle panniers or a backpack. In the future, I'm going to tell them to watch this video! It perfectly explains everything I love about bicycle touring (and backpacking). Everything.

Of your many great videos, this might be the very best. Very well said and I could not agree more on all of your points. Loved the turtle and jack rabbit story and analysis. “No one can ride slow enough to keep up with me” 🤣🤣🤣 Being more of a turtle myself, I can relate and strongly agree the world is best experienced at 10-13mph! Superb video and points. Keep on riding, enjoy and be safe. Thanks.

Nice Miyata 1000 one of my all time favorite touring bike. Of course now it's Surly. The bike is your companion on these tours. I tour in the states on a 1982 Trek 729 and in Germany on a Surly Travelers Check. The places we've been. I'm sure you know what I mean.
