I really don't think people know just how good Datsyuk was. From his dangles/amazing passes to everything away from the puck, he has to be in the top ten for the most skilled players ever.

No question. His hockey IQ, positioning, deception, awareness, deft movements, dexterity are things you don’t always notice when watching him but they are always a part of his game. These things make him not only an incredible stick handler and playmaker but also one of the best two way players of all time.

Now there are Ovi, Kuzi, Gino, Kuch... But only Datstyuk ( with his datsyukian deke) have managed to put his name into the English vocabulary. Like Gudini did

Smartest and best player ever. No one beats him one on one. He’d take it away from anyone and dangle right through them. It was The greatest privilege to watch him every night playing for the good guys, doing jaw dropping things, things you’d never seen before and will never see again. He made it look so simple and easy. The highlight reel plays is what most will remember, but it was the little things that didn’t get a lot of attention, but if you’ve played hockey you see him do it, you ask yourself...”did that just happen?” I watch a lot of current and old hockey, as much as I can, including all the greats, and I can say no player thoroughly dominated the game while he was on the ice like datsyuk. Even if it didn’t look like he did much, he always put his team in a better spot when he came off the ice than where they were when he stepped on the ice. The only player I’ve seen hat compares even somewhat to datsyuk’s hockey IQ is Crosby. In my mind it’s datsyuk 1, Crosby 2, Bobby Orr 3, after that I don’t care.

The precision of his shots is just mindboggling, it's kinda circus art, Dats is always super-rational - he rushes when needed and is patient and slow to release, when necessary, he can score from any angle, he can use the goalie as his offensive partner using a ricochet, Pavel never does even one superfluous motion, he is best in stealing the puck, his backhander is terrific, his timing is next to none. Magician!!!

When he does score, it's usually a sick goal. I remember being 13 - my favourite team was the ducks and lived in Toronto - I always got 1 pair of tickets per year and always chose the Red Wings games because he was just too fun to watch. Whenever he touched the puck you'd be thoroughly entertained.

Supplanted Fedorov as my favorite player of all time. His blend of vision, creativity, skill, determination, and hard work are a combination I hope to see again, but don't expect to. He played clean, picked pockets, had the nastiest backhander (and wrist shot), and was a crucial part of the Wings for years. I was heartbroken when Zetterberg got the C. The thing that struck me watching this now is just HOW MANY CLUTCH GOALS this guy scored. So many 3rd period, or overtime goals. He was the best player on the ice in the moments when it mattered most. Thanks for the memories 13.

Datsyuk is pure hockey genius so much so that it escapes many of the analysts calling the game. The 8:00 play, was not just a lethally executed toe drag. 99% of players would move in and shoot with a defenceman committing entirely to the pass on the 2 on 1. At high speed and in fractions of a second, Datsyuk calculates that a shot is a lower percentage scoring chance than the situation affords. So what does he do? He glides much closer to the center of the ice and the defenceman then initiates coil to feign a shot KNOWING that his proximity to the defenceman will now be such that the Dman will commit to shot block as pass is no longer an option. Leaning for shot block and effectively screening the goalie, a flawless execution of the toe drag (thank you announcer) and what was a 10% chance of scoring shot becomes a 90% chance of scoring. I'm sure some of you will think this is over analysis or maybe obvious, but I do think its his ability to read and react to situations at genius level speed that makes him more like a genius than a magician.

I remember a game a few years ago between the Red Wings and the Bruins. The play was behind Tuukka Rask and Datsyuk did his typical wicked deke around Patrice Bergeron. I'm not lying when I say that the TV microphone next to the ice picked up these three words from Bergeron's mouth: "Are you serious?!?"
@dbis

Matthew LaTorre I remember that play, what happened was actually Bergeron was in front of the Detroit net and had a really good scoring chance, but Datsyuk just snuck up behind him and knocked his stick away right when he was about to shoot. Bergeron kinda just stood there against the boards for a second and was like "are you serious"

5:35 - Up against two defenders and a goalie and makes a mid-air rebound look easy. And whats crazy is that's a par for the course type of shot for Datsyuk too. Here we are with our jaws on the floor and for Datsyuk, it's just another day at the office. And to think practically nobody had even heard of him before he was drafted by the Wings and then would go on to spend his entire NHL career with Detroit. This is the stuff legends are made of. Just amazing an absolute pleasure to watch. I realize he's probably happy to be back home but Hockeytown just ain't the same without him.

I know Datsyuk is arguably the most skilled active player right now, but what keeps impressing me is his backhand! They're equally as deadly as his wrists and snaps (which also have a very high follow through, a unique style I don't see anyone else use). He can literally snipe with a backhand. It's like a lost art these days.

His first career goal was a perfect sign of things to come... vision, patience, talent... Most rookies, veterans even would of put it on net wayy earlier than Daystuk did...he saw he had some space, took it all the way across the front of the net... and he finished with a perfect , no look backhand thru the defensemans legs and past a sprawling goalie... As a Metro Detroiter and obviously a lifelong Wings fan, it was truly a privilege to watch this guy play.

When he did an episode of "Trev takes on", he said that the puck was his and he just let other people play with it. He could have easily beat any record that Wayne Gretzky had, but he was a shy kind of guy. The chant used to go "Shoot the Puck". He would rather pass than shoot. He was amazing to watch.

I know they all hit their primes at different times but seeing a line with Pavel, Zetty, and Brett Hull really shows how legendary that early 2000s roster was.

Такая неразбериха в стане оппонентов , когда он шайбу перехватывает)) Головы смотрят в одну сторону , тела - в другую , Дацюк - в третьей ))))

Little did anyone that the first Datsyuk goal was not only a sign of things to come, but a Stanley Cup Finals preview

I grew up a Detroit fan of most sports and I've been blessed with watching these incredible talents like Pavs, Barry Sanders, Ben Wallace, Sergei Fedorov, Miguel Cabrera, Nick Lidstrom, Steve Yzerman, Calvin Johnson......

i was at that game against the Oilers back in 2011… down 1-0 the entire game for Nick to tie it with like 30 seconds left. Datsyuk literally shot through 5 guys to win it. incredible experience!

I am so glad that he played for Detroit it enabled me to see more of his games on television. This guy was just magical with his legs and stick handling. Hated to see him leave but understand he wanted to be back with family. Thanks for the magic Mr. Datsyuk.
