@Rabbi Shekelstein And this is only his offense lol, he was literally the best defensive forward in the game on top of this. Easily in contention for best player of this era with Crosby/McDavid/Ovechkin
@funtimes82964 жыл бұрын
@Rabbi Shekelstein Watched him play consistently in the 2007-10 time frame, especially during playoffs. He was pretty easily on Crosby/Ovechkins level if not better as an overall player. Like when they went head to head you surely did not get the sense they were better that's for sure lol

I had the privilege of living in Detroit and was raised in hockey loving family. I have played and seen a lot of hockey. 3 generations watching the Wings and all of us agree that Pavel is so unassuming and yet is the greatest threat on the ice. He appears to be asleep at the switch but suddenly like magic, performs like no other. His stick handling talent, quickness and graceful bewitches they other teams minds. Pavel has faked more players out of their jock strap than any player in NHL history.

Never gets old, could watch over and over. The most creative, enjoyable, exciting player I ever had the pleasure of watching since the day he came up. Was like his mind was 10 moves ahead of everyone else. What do they tell you in hockey, play the body, not the puck especially against someone like him. Flat out made some of the biggest names in hockey look like amateurs when he played against them...

Pavel elevates ice hockey to the level of high art, he is like a circus trickster. While Ovechkin is just brutal force, pressing, slap and wrist shots, Datsyuk always uses his wit and his amazing coordination to baffle goalies and defensement. He is unmatched in robbing other players of the puck, his backhanders are almost the best in the league and his stickhandling is the best.

English Hooligan They can't beat Canada all alone, without the backing of others, because there must be 20 players like that to beat Canada which can produce three more or less equal national teams because ice hockey is Canada's pride. Of course, I know the guys you mentioned plus Alexander Yakushev, Konstantin Loktev along with Bobrov, Starshinov, Mayorov, Ragulin, Maltsev, Balderis, Zinger, Tretyak, Firsov, Shadrin, Zimin and many more. By the way, Datsyuk seems to be the extension of Valery Kharlamov who tragically died in a car accident, because many of his dangles look very similar to those of Valery. I'd give Malkin and Ovi for one Datsyuk in his prime. At the Olympics you mentioned Pavel was the only one who played very well and scored important goals, but as the saying goes in Russia, a single man (player) is not a warrior in a battlefield and cannot win battles for his team alone, this is a team sport. Datsyuk won Stanley Cup, which is a more honorable prize in ice hockey than national team competitions. Canada has way better defensemen than Russia and can produce 50 forwards if not at the level of Datsyuk and Ovi, then at least at the level of Tarasenko or better while in Russia there are 4-5 stars and that's about all. Canada can come up with three rosters and all will be better than the Russian national team. But you should also bear in mind that the Soviet players you mentioned played in a different era of much slower and generally milder hockey compared to its present version. I don't think Wayne Gretsky could be such a brilliant goal scorer at present, when Ovi is the only player who can score more than 50 goals per season and then only because Backstrom often serves him great passes. It takes Datsyuk fractions of a second to make the right decisions, since now nobody gives you more time.
@FuckitnFightit8 жыл бұрын
Igor Pospekhin i agree with you 100% if anybody watched Datsyuk in his prime he was a step above a Malkin or Ovi. I believe he had a 5 year stretch where he was the best all around player in the league, (that includes Crosby)

I remember Brett Hull had an interview during the Wing's unreal 2001-2002 year. He was talking about the then rookie Datsyuk who was baffling the Wings at practice. Apparently Pavel would challenge players one on one at the end of practice. Keep in mind that the Wings had Yzerman, Lindstrom, Shannahan, Robitaille, Hull, a young Zetterberg, Federov and Chelios at the time. Apparently Hull said Datsyuk would destroy everyone he faced and eventually the boys stopped taking his challenges. Hull also said his father was Bobby Hull and it was not very surprising the HOF career he had. He couldn't believe Datsyuk figured out how to play the game like this in a remote town in Russia. Pavel was a class act, missed him a lot this year. Not too many players in the league who are respected the way he was.

There hasn't ever been anyone like him. Look at the Wings, he left and the team couldn't make the playoffs. There are other issues but he was a BIG piece of that team. The Wings have lost some really great players, Konstantinov, Fisher, Franzen etc. The loss of Konstantinov was a HUGE loss, he would have been a top 5 defenseman for years. Think Vlady and Lindstrom on the blue line, frightening.

All hockey people I know think Datsyuk is the best hockey player in the world. I mean who else can do what he does on a regular basis? Kuznetsov, Panarin and all other Russians learn the magic of stickhandling from him. Thinking that Pasha was not even supposed to play hockey after his teenage injury. And has played through and with injuries for years and years. And all his hockey life he's been battling what was not supposed to be, and in spite of that has become not only a player but one of the best of the best. Ever. I am pretty sure the Wings 25 yr playoff record is tied to him name, so I don't know how long they will maintain that record after he is gone. In this sea of talented men of hockey, there is only one Magic Man. Enjoy his game while it lasts.

I don't want you to take this the wrong way but I can't say who is the best player in the world today. There's an argument for Ovechkin, Crosby, Datsyuk, and even Price. I think you could put together a top 4 or 5 in the world and each of them could be in any place from 1-4 or 5 without me making much argument against any particular order. It's just too close to call at that level. Best stick handler? hands down Datsyuk. Best puck protection? Crosby without question. Best goal scorer? Ovechkin. I shudder to think what those 3 players would do on a line together.

+muscles662988 You are right. The most classy guy in NHL and he has the best set of hands you can ever see. He has ripping backhander, even better forehand and his datsyukian dekes are simply awesome. Nobody can move the puck like him.

Sorry to hear Pavel is quitting the NHL. He scored a goal against the Sharks in the playoffs a few years ago that is the wickedest backhander I've ever seen. The announcers were a bit dumbfounded. NHL needs more greats like Datsyuk.

I envy the Red Wings fans who had a privilege of watching Datsyuk every game for so many years. And he was one of the best defensive forwards of our time

I hope to live long enough to see another player come along who can handle the puck as well as Datsyuk. Absolutely brilliant what that man can do.

I was born in 1988. No better time to grow up during the dynasty the wings became. Getting to have Pavel Datsyuk lace up for my home team every game was special. I was truly spoiled as a wings fan my whole life even to the cup in 2008. What a ride

It's a shame some Crosby fans won't ever see the light in the sky of hockey that is known as discipline, Crosby may be another great of his time but nowhere near what datsyuk can perform. Harshly underrated.

Datsyuk's hockey Hall of Fame video? I think so!!! As a Redwings fan this video is emotional. As a hockey fan, regardless of your favorite team, you cant deny the incredible talent and the immense improvements he made for the game.
