Yes, just about everything Lisitsian recorded is perfection. Many years ago I got a chance to briefly chat with Hvorostovsky at Houston Grand Opera. He was signing programs. When I asked him about Lisitsian he became very animated, and it was obvious that he had gotten so much from his mentor.

David Clarke This is why his Met debut was not a big success. The NY critics were used to Warren’s massive sounds and apparently could not recognize a more beautiful voice with a Golden Age technique.
@jddphd4 жыл бұрын
@@ransomcoates546 Interesting you say "Golden Age" technique. My first thought upon hearing him is that he sounds like he's Italian...i.e, like he was trained by an Italian steeped in the tradition. Stunning production.

@@ransomcoates546 This overlooks the fact the Leonard Warren died on stage days before Lisitian's Met debut as Amonasro in Aida. He very likely would have been much more favorably remembered if Warren had not died that same week so dramatically.

The earliest recordings of him that I know date from the late 1940s, but his voice shows little sign of aging here almost 20 years later. Truly incredible singer.

Yes Lisitsian was an incredible singer, perhaps the greatest vocalist of the 20th century. His earliest recording that I have found is from 1939 - A song by Balakirev "Come over to me". I have almost all of his recordings and videos - only missing about 6. The live concerts from 1948, 1949, and 1951 are astounding; hopefully a video of one of his concerts will surface. He retired from the Bolshoi in 1967, when he felt that it was time. After that he sang with his family, well into the 1970s.
@critic92162 жыл бұрын
This is amazing. Even better, freer, and more emotional than his commercial recordings of this aria. I'd always thought that Hvorostovsky's renditions were a bit more emotional than Lisitsian's, but this performance disproves that feeling. Both of those singers are unforgettable, but Lisitsian probably has the edge.
@rk371tx2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comments. Khvorostovsky had a gorgeous voice but lacked the brilliant and explosive top notes that Lisitsian produced with such ease. I have marveled at Lisitsian's voice for almost 50 years, and have compiled a discography with 366 items, of which almost all are in my collection. To fully appreciate the incredible artistry (and endurance) of Lisitsian, you have to hear the 3 live concerts from 1948, 1949, and 1951. After the holidays I will start posting some rare items to KZbin.

Live concert 24 February 1951 with piano 4. 78 RPM USSR 022288 - 1953 (I do not have this) 5. Stars of Moscow filmed concert, with the Bolshoi Orchestra - 1964, at age 53 Number 5 is the only video. Hi Kathleen - glad you enjoyed the video. Yes, Dmitri was a great singer, but he could never match Pavel for those explosive high notes, incredible breath control, or breadth of repertoire. I once met Dmitri at Houston Grand Opera, and when I asked him about Lisitsian, his eyes lit up and he explained that he learned a lot from PGL. So beautiful. A lovely voice. How does Dmitri hvorostovsky compare with Pavel?
@rk371tx2 жыл бұрын
I believe Pavel Lisitsian is in a class by himself. Hvorostovsky was a fine singer, but he did not have the breath control, the expansive high notes, the expressiveness, or the repertoire of Lisitsian. I have over 350 recordings of Pavel, and to my ears there is only perfection in every one of them, even the live concerts (stunning vocalism) and operas. If you would like my PGL discography, just send your email to rk371@sbcglobal.net

@@rk371tx Thanks for your reply. I will send you my email for Lisitsian's discography. I am a fan of Hvorostovsky and I know that he had great breath control, so I am very interested that PL's control was even better. I am also well aware that what DH added to his lovely voice was his good looks.
@rk371tx2 жыл бұрын
@@Blackcat2005 In the second verse of Prince Yeletsky's great aria, Lisitsian rises to the top note, and then, without a breath, sings the complete descending phrase. Hvorostovsky takes a short breath after the top note, at least in the version that I heard. At the end of Yeletsky's aria, in the video, Lisitsian holds that soft note to the very end. There are so many other examples of his incredible vocalism, like in one of the folk songs where PGL rises to a falsetto, and then back to baritone in one long breath.
