Pavel Markelov (russe Павел Маркелов) est un compositeur russe né le 6 juin 1967 à Magadan, une ville dans l'extrême est de la Sibérie, située sur les rives de la mer d'Okhotsk dans l'océan Pacifique. Ne pas confondre avec le clarinettiste du même nom, qui a également étudié à Moscou et vit maintenant à Toronto au Canada. Il est diplômé de l'Académie nationale de musique Gnessin de Moscou en 1986. Il compose sa première oeuvre à 12 ans. Il s'est spécialisé dans des compositions pour cloches, il est lui-même enseignant et charge de la cathédrale orthodoxe "Eglise de la vieille orthodoxie russe". Depuis 1988 il travaille dans le clocher de la cathédrale de la Résurrection de Rogozhskaya Sloboda. Markelov est un maître dans l'art des cloches. Ses élèves travaillent dans les églises de la Sainte Trinité et de Saint-Serge à Moscou et les clochetons dans de nombreuses villes russes. Parmi ses compositions se trouvent 20 symphonies pour cloches, composées entre 1984 et 2007. La symphonie pour cloches n° 15 est composée pour choeur d'hommes, cloches, deux pianos et orgue ; la symphonie pour cloches n° 17 "Légende de Saint Pierre et Saint Fevronia" est composée pour cloches seules. Son oeuvre comporte aussi 9 symphonies pour orchestre, des sonates, musique de chambre, musique chorale et instrumentale

That was most interesting, the first movement was definitely in the 'English Pastoral' vein, but the later movements turned much more pensive.
