Pavement Optional: A Washington BDR Adventure

One of the perks of life in the Pacific North West is having access to large amounts of public land. Those of us who live here are incredibly fortunate to live in a place where the outdoors and public lands are respected by so many.
One of the gems here in Washington state is the "WA Backcountry Discovery Route" (WABDR). The WABDR is a 575 mile route that cuts through the Cascades from the Columbia River to the Canadian Border. Every summer, folks in 4x4s and on adventure motorcycles explore the roads less traveled.

All this is made possible by a non-profit, volunteer-powered organization that creates off-highway routes for dual-sport and adventure motorcycle travel. In addition, they promote rider education, safety campaigns and responsible travel for motorcyclists traveling in the backcountry.

Great video man. I made it into the vid at the campground and Conconully at the restaurant when you passed us lol. I thought I saw ya pass us while we were in the restaurant. Those Canadians were a great group.

Hi GrizzLee, you have inspired me and my friends over the years to ride up to Bella Coola and to ride the IDBDR. I am considering riding the WABDR from Ellensburg to Conconully and camping along the way. I noticed you don't ride the GS 1200 anymore, and have scaled down to the 650. Do you think you would ride your 1200 on those sections of the WABDR?

Hahaha. Yes, I still ride my 1200. In fact see my last Idaho bdr video.... you'll see my new 1200. I wouldn't hesitate riding my 1200 on the WABDR, save for baby head hill. I have my 650 to ride those rides with friends near home. With riding friends we can share the gear, so I don't need the big bike. when I ride alone, I have to be a bit more cautious and I carry more gear. Btw, I have a new video coming out very soon.. its almost done. Its just me and Sally (my 650) riding solo from cashmere to conconully and back over the cascades. I had a tough summer this year... suffering from bacterial pneumonia for a spell. Thanks for riding along. Stay safe out there. ~[e-mail]

Great video. How do you rate the difficulty of the WABDR to the Idaho BDR? Looks like the WABDR to be slightly more difficult.

The WABDR has a couple of technical sections that I deem not big bike friendly. I could probably do them. But with a smaller bike in my stable, I ask why. The IDBDR on the otherhand, is definitely more big bike friendly. There are some side trips I won't do on the R1200GS I have... mainly up to lookout towers. They are just too rocky to tackle on my own. . Thanks for riding along. ~GrizzLee

RubiKon Adventurers Watching your videos wants me to put IDBDR on my list. I’ve done some small sections of the WABDR around Wenatchee on my Africa Twin. Some of it was challenging for the big bike.

Hi what type of snake was that? I rode my mountain bike on a section of the Kettle Valley Railway in B.C. and rode over a snake that had a diamond pattern on its back, my friend said it was a rattlesnake but I was not going back to take a look.
