Everyone that has commented about the arms are completely wrong so far. That is called a ski and they are running 2 of them which is called great grade which isn't very common honestly. There are 3 sensors per ski that read the road and relay it to the paver to make the smoothest ride possible, those sensors will pick up low spots or high spots and fill them on the fly. They have nothing to do with keeping the paver on track or weight in the hopper.

That’s mostly true but when running 3 sensors on a ski it’s called a sonic averaging system. It takes all 3 measurements and averages them out so it doesn’t make to many adjustments when there is highs and lows.

There is another important reason for using this "technique" that no one has mentioned so far. When the run to/from the asphalt plant gets longer, the load tends to cool and segregate in the truck. By dumping it on the ground and using the pickup, the transfer buggy can re-mix the asphalt so it is all a consistent temperature again.
@head75023 жыл бұрын
The whole purpose of this method is so that the paver never stops. They need a better ground guy on those belly’s.
@matthewbrady52742 жыл бұрын
Agreed, however it's possible that the hot plant is far away from the work zone and the trucks are just not coming fast enough. That said, it's better to stop the paver earlier so that the buggy doesn't need to back up.
@Tractors_Trucks_And_Pups2 жыл бұрын

It's actually not that slow from personal experience. I drive double bottom dumps here in california for calportland construction. I can carry 26 tons of asphalt where a Super 10 dump truck can only carry 19-19.5 its a whole lot of fun i tell ya.
@JC-dr8ev4 жыл бұрын
You have it think about all that time that the paver is not moving at all waiting on trucks switching out. This operation never stops moving.
@kevindavis66994 жыл бұрын
We dont stop the paver between trucks just slow it down and u can keep the forward momentum
@snowboard3r694 жыл бұрын
@@JC-dr8ev Except that part where it did. Somehow they were dumping trucks too far in front of the transfer, he had to drive ahead to get material then back up to the paver. Then for some reason they backed the next truck over the windrow of asphalt... that driver must have been thrilled to be cleaning it off everything under his truck. I could see this being a smooth operation if the guy responsible for guiding trucks was dumping them all in the right spot. In the northeast you don't see belly dumps so the trucks just dump straight into the transfer machine. Same idea but you arent putting the material on the ground twice.

@Tractors_Trucks_And_Pups3 жыл бұрын

@davidanderson14513 жыл бұрын
You need to know how wide and how deep they are paving. Also, you need to know the truck capacity. So if you're paving 15 ft wide and 2 inches deep and the truck holds 22 tons, then the load of mix will cover a distance of 117 linear ft at 15 ft wide. So you need to dump the truck on the space of 117 ft. Usually a bit less since the MTV holds 22 tons max and the hopper insert in the paver holds 12 to 16 tons. I would aim to dump that truck in 100 to 110 ft.
@jerrykinnin79414 жыл бұрын
How many tons per pup. My 16 ft triaxle in Kentucky can haul 27 tons non state jobs. 20 ton state work. Shuttle buggy can hold 6 truck loads. When we widened i64 we had enought trucks to pull 6 miles of surface in one pull. 120 trucks 2 shuttle buggies. 3 plants running. That was 19 years ago.
@Tractors_Trucks_And_Pups4 жыл бұрын

@Tractors_Trucks_And_Pups4 жыл бұрын
Wow, can't even begin to think what that is like! 300 trucks!🤯
@Eric-fs3cc2 жыл бұрын
The idea is to dump multiple trucks depending on outside temp and the MTV has a sensor to lock on to the paver and the paver driver dictates the speed. Never have to stop that way. Just don't run the MTV at max capacity and it won't slug the operation. Also dual grade ski's are common where we pave.

Just seems stupid to dump it on the ground instead of in the buggy. The buggy holds atleast 25t. And wouldn’t need to stop in between loads either way. With this method, the trucks can only go straight otherwise the trailer runs over what it just dumped. What if the truck dumps and then the paver goes down? Now the material is out and getting cold.
@jaecamper88092 жыл бұрын
They fill up the shuttle buggy with the first belly dump, it almost always full of asphalt that's why they dump it in a straight line. I worked for PSC for 3 years dumping bellys. You see the green and red light by the shuttle buggy operator? the green light indicates it's halfway full of asphalt and can't hold an entire load from a truck and needs to be spread out.
@robbieboyd5869 Жыл бұрын
The shuttle buggy is designed where it can keep the asphalt hot for occasions like when a paver goes down. The asphalt in the spreader is a different story though. These days there is always a spare paver close by so if that happens it can be there real quick.
