Just over 3 weeks ago my son was fitted with a a pavlik harness for DDH. I’ve learnt how to very quickly take off and put on a new vest under the harness so I wanted to share my tips

Over one head gave me a giggle 😂. Thanks for this helpful video! Our wee girl is potentially going to have to be fitted for one of these soon. ❤

Glad you found it helpful…. And my counting of heads didn’t confuse you! If you do get one for your daughter, just remember it gets easier after a few days 💜

Such a skillful change of onesie! Thank you for helping me imagine what my mum had had to figure out. I wore Pavlik's Harness in Czechia in1960, while Dr Pavlik was still writing and in practice there! BTW, my harness was removed only once I'd figured out how to stand in the crib despite it! Presumably way later than they're used now😅! I have vague memories of my mum describing the debate of how often to expose me to the X-ray evaluations which also expose ovaries to Xrays, the *mounds* of cloth diapers and clothes changes to wash, and all the pins the harness required. But your video filled in much of the logistics I had wondered about after I no longer had parents to ask. I expect that your son recovered fully and walks and runs happily. May this be a fading memory, mostly pride of how resiliently and creatively you'd dealt with the complexities of caring for and traveling with a baby in the Pavlik harness! Thanks for posting these tips and video for every parent who is figuring this out!

Wow thank you for such a powerful comment. It baffles my mind how challenging it must have been in the past, with no easy access to information, especially when I relate it to the lack of information I felt I had which led me to make these videos in the first place! My son is as you say, happy and healthy. We did experience some gross motor delay but likely due to hypermobility and a tibia break not long after he walked! I’m amazed how helpful these videos have been for people, when at the time for me this was a way of coping! Thank you x

Wow thanks for this. My 4 week old got put in her harness last night 😢 it hasn’t even been 24 hours yet and her little armpits are getting red. I was told the harness has to go next to the skin and was told not to undo the straps at all. but I might ring and ask about putting a vest underneath like this?
@erinlouiseruth

We were told to ideally put the vest on top, so I imagine your doc will say the same. I however took the decision to put it underneath but as you can see, I didn’t remove the harness atall. I only loosened the arm straps (and marked when they needed to be Velcro’d). I never adjusted the leg straps, and would never advise that. We were very very careful always, and took a lot of care in changing the vest until we were more confident. Initially it took 3 of us to do it, and then I was able to do it on my own once I was used to it x

@@nguyendolar3429 Read this: Preventive health care, 2001 update: screening and management of developmental dysplasia of the hip in newborns - PMC (nih.gov) This is a large review (from 1966 to 2000) of scientific studies concerning DDH by Canadian Task Force on Preventive Health. Quote: "Because most infants will have spontaneous resolution of nonteratologic DDH, early identification and intervention results in unnecessary labelling of newborns as having the problem and unnecessary treatment. Ultrasound screening is a highly sensitive but poorly specific measure of clinically relevant DDH. Abduction splinting is associated with a variety of problems, and its effectiveness in treating DDH is not clearly known. At least 20% of infants requiring operative intervention have had splint therapy. The harms of labelling, repetitive investigations, unnecessary splinting and resource consumption associated with screening are substantial".

I know this is an old video but our 3 month old was just fitted for one of these. Our pediatrician put it on her bare skin but said we could choose to do clothes over the Barnes or under, whatever we wanted. Is there a benefit to doing one instead of the other? Obviously under the harness would help with rubbing but for certain clothing items like footed pajamas or pants I’m wondering how I would change her diaper if the clothes were under the harness

Thanks for your comment, and hope you are finding things ok. Feedback we had was that clothes under the harness could mean some slipping of the harness / twisting, and the obvious having to perhaps take the harness off. I weighed up the pros and cons of both and found a way to get the vest on with minimal movement of the harness. Dr’s will always be super cautious and advise the ‘best’ thing to do as they don’t know how careful you will be I guess. I only ever put a thin vest under the harness, everything else was on top (pyjamas, jumpers, trousers)
