If memory serves me correctly, this is in fact the worlds first commercially produced electric guitar.
@ronaldshank7589
@ronaldshank7589 2 жыл бұрын
If so, then an instrument like this, if it had been in mint condition, would've fetched a lot more money than what this guy got. I think that Rick gave him a fairly good sum of money for it, all things considered. Can you imagine what this dude would've gotten for this guitar, had it been in mint condition? Rick woulda flipped his lid, trying to buy it off this guy! The offer that Rick woulda made woulda been much, much higher!
@ChrisEck13
@ChrisEck13 2 жыл бұрын
It depends on what your definition of commercially produced is. They made several of them and sold them but with very limited numbers compared to the relatively large amount that Gibson made just a few years later. In the first year production of the frying pan I think they sold less than 15.
@modularcuriosity
@modularcuriosity 2 жыл бұрын
It's often said to be the first solid body electric guitar. I think there may have been electric lap steel guitars prior to that.
@ChrisEck13
@ChrisEck13 2 жыл бұрын
@@modularcuriosity There we're lap steels before that and there were also hollow body electrics. Gibson was making hollow body electrics well before the Tele. Their ES Series which came to include guitars like the ES-335 started in the 40s as did the P90 pickup which is still used today.
@modularcuriosity
@modularcuriosity 2 жыл бұрын
@@ChrisEck13 But wouldn't a frying pan from the late 30's pre-date that? What an interesting history. When was the first electric guitar vs. the first electric solid body guitar: 🙂 It's interesting to be to watch some of the top Hawaiian lap steel players still playing a frying pan. I have no idea how many were built and how many are available. I would add that it was frustrating to see their "expert" come in who couldn't play a single thing on that instrument 🙂 Great discussion!

When you got something like that, you don't go to TV pawn shop guy with it wtf. You go to a proper appraiser, figure out if you should have it restored (polishing brass, removing yellowing from finish, etc) or leave it as is, and get an appraisal on paper. THEN go to the pawn shop if you are in a hurry, but you are way better off leaving it in consignment at a specialized guitar shop with the price you want on it until it sells.
