The quality varied of course, with expensive swords being better quality, and cheaper swords of poorer quality, but Europeans had access to superior steel and forging techniques. Many Japanese 1000 folds and their swords were so much better nonsense is mythical and false. Yes they were good but not deserving of the status they are elevated to.

Even as a cuter katanas are not that special, Some Japanese emperor banned any change in katanas 500+ some years ago thinking that it was perfect while European sword kept changing and improving.

@@roundeyeudie Footmen didn't really use swords though since swords were too expensive. On top becoming decent swordsman takes a lot of time unlike learning how to use a spear. It's a well known fact that Nippon steel is not good at all compared to European steel.

Just for your information, european steel was not bad. Japanese iron and tamahagane steel was indeed bad, with many impurities still inside. What the japanese were trully good at was taking that bellow average metal and turn it into an above average blade with a lot of fine work. Katanas may not be flexible blades but they can cut and slash pretty well.
