Yeah, he offered a guy half a million for a Jimi Hendrix original guitar (looked like the one he played at woodstock and the Atlanta Pop festival and the guy turned to walk out the door after turning down $500,000 and then Rick said "$600,000? and the guy said "Man I just don't need the cash that bad to do less than a million". Its a 69 from between very late March and late November. Has large headstock which came in late March 69. Still has one piece, non-sandwich body with centre seam top, no neck volute ( the volute came in late 69), still has holly wood (not fibre) headstock veneer. Could have had p90s if early in the year or mini hums if later. So could have been a Standard or early Deluxe. It's been routed for full-size humbuckers. The gold lined cases (model 0535 'faultless') were only available in 1968 (version1) and this one (version 2) in 1969. Proper old growth Honduras mahogany with bias cut necks on these early reissues. They sound as good as the 50s ones in my experience. Jesse is about right on the price, but it's not a 68. Also check the beautiful 'German' top carve, not the dome top of the soon to appear Norlin models.

Pawn shop isn't a place where anybody would find of bring a 59. However, I'm pretty sure some unfortunate people have been ripped off in places like these, not knowing what they had under the bed in their grandpas house. Not sure why would a player want a 59 actually. They're mostly collectors pieces. You can get much later and cheaper Les Pauls that will be equal or even better in terms of playability. There was lots of experimenting and inconsistencies in 59s, which means some of them weren't as amazing as people believe :)

After looking at it again it is quite possible it is a deluxe but after taking another look, it has s split seamed top, that is characteristic of a '68 but the non dotted "i" usually means it was finished in '69. I think this axe today is worth at least 7k. I think it might be hard to tell without the original electronics or knowing the serial number on it if it was bastardized from a deluxe or a regular standard with p-90's in it. My 2 cents.

Still has one piece, non-sandwich body with centre seam top, no neck volute ( the volute came in late 69), still has holly wood (not fibre) headstock veneer. Could have had p90s if early in the year or mini hums if later. So could have been a Standard or early Deluxe. It's been routed for full size humbuckers. The gold lined cases (model 0535 'faultless') were only available in 1968 (version1) and this one (version 2) in 1969. Proper old growth Honduras mahogany with bias cut necks on these early reissues. They sound as good as the 50s ones in my experience. I'm always surprised how little these 'experts' know.

I bought mine in 72 in UK.Its a three piece top and was fitted with gibson engraved mini humbuckers.I had it routed for pafs, hav'nt seen many engraved mini Hums about. Its still on original frets although ive just had it crowned. It plays, sounds and looks superb in my opinion therefore I'm not convinced there were quality issues then,I am however on to my third ABR1 due to sagging!

His friend does not seem to be an “expert” on vintage guitars. A real expert appraising a vintage guitar would pull the pickups, and see if it had paf pickups, or early t-tops. If paf’s, they alone would be worth more than $3,500. And he would check the volume and tone pots, and caps, see if they are original. And also the hardware, such as bridge, tailpiece and studs, tuners, ect. He never checked to see if it had been refretted, had a neck break, warped neck. This is no expert.

For these late 60s LPs, it wasn't uncommon for these guitars to be changed. The Standards and Deluxes were only available as goldtops at the time.. Plus, full size humbucking pickups were not available on the Standards until a few years later.

The worst mistake people can make is thinking that "not original" equals "not valuable". It may be a "players grade" guitar but its also a good parts guitar for the pieces that ARE original. Somewhere there's always someone that has a 99% "original" something that's short a few pieces and parts from being "perfect" and those guys will pay stupid money to get those last few parts. It happens with cars and antique farm tractors and any "vintage" machines that have been around and used so long that its virtually impossible to find one that's a perfect "original" OR one that HAS those often-replaced parts and pieces but yet is for sale cheap.

How could you appraise a vintage les Paul without looking under the hood if that guitar has original paf humbuckers or even second gen pat number pickups which are essentially the same thing with a patent number on the bottom side of the pickup instead of a sticker that says patent applied for the pickups alone with fetch that amount or close to it
