That dude with the Hendrix guitar is probably one of the smartest people to ever go in the show. He knew the value of that thing, and Rick did as well, knowing how much it costs at an auction. That dude held out on 600k in cash, to fetch 2 million dollars. This guy *KNEW*
@Neronova888 Жыл бұрын

@Cyhawkx Жыл бұрын
He doesn't know the value. Its been up for auction twice since then, both in the 400-600k range, neither hit the reserve (prob 1m). If anything the expert went too high due to his personal love of Hendrix. If he had taken Ricks offer in 2012-2014 (cant find the record date) and invested it into a mutual fund, he'd have his mill by now and Rick would have been left holding the. . . guitar case. Serial L14958, you're incorrect on which one sold for 2m. IIRC the 2m was the National Anthem guitar

The guy with Hendrix's guitar was an absolute grandmaster. His item was legit, his asking price was fair and his bargaining was crisp, to-the-point and logical. One of the smartest lines i heard in this video and probably today was.."it potentially fetches me a million bucks on an auction, i cant leave all that money on the table".
@causetheplumstasteyum7848 Жыл бұрын
In reality its not that the guy was " SUPER SMART " its mostly common sense to anyone with a decent working brain , just most people go in having done minimal if any research and are wanting fast cash , the guy probably got paid to feature his item in the show aswell as blatent advertising showing others what he has , hardly Einstein just going about it in the right way.

The Hendrix guitar would have been a nice thing to have. In 1983 I was hired for a session at a recording studio in New York City that has long since gone out of business. For the session, I played through a raggedy old amp they had in the studio. After the session, as I was ready to leave, the owner took me into the studio and turned the amp around,. Stenciled on the back were the words that froze me in my tracks: "Jimi Hendrix Experience. Handle With Care." My jaw hit the floor. Apparently, Hendrix gave some amps to Leslie West. The guy who owned the studio was a former roadie with Mountain, and got one of them. A year later, I had the chance to buy it when I heard the owner was liquidating his stuff. But, being a penniless and destitute musician trying to survive 80s era New York City (a truly brutal place at the time), I had no money. About six years ago, I learned that somebody bought it for $150,000. That's my big "the one that got away" story. But, I played out of one of Jimi's amps! Not many can say the same!

The Washington suit is not for sale; total publicity stunt. The Hendrix guitar that sold for $2 M is a different guitar. That one is in the Hendrix Experience museum and was the one that Hendrix played on stage at Woodstock. Iconic because of very famous fllm footage of Hendrix playing the Star Spangled Banner on that guitar. Plus it was bought by Paul Allen, the guy who paid for the whole Hendrix museum. A complete one off unique sale. The guitar in the show is a completely different guitar with no story, no pictures and no provenance; and no billionaire fanboy to jack the price up. Oh, and the $2 million Paul Allen sale was in 1998. For reference, Hendrix's Starburst that he played in 1962 sold for just over $200K at GWS auctions.

Was that the one he used on Isle of Wight? And probably the Band of Gypsys concerts? Funny thing here..Rick asked the guy "Was this guitar on Band of Gypsys?" Other guy : "Yeah, he played this guitar on several records. He played this on Nervous Breakdown as well...." Hmm, all the clips from those Band of Gypsys live shows show Hendrix playing a black Stratocaster and I never heard of a song (or album) that was called "Nervous Breakdown". Probably meant "Manic Depression". I read that they rehearsed for a week at Juggy Sound before the Band of Gypsys concerts...Hendrix could have used it on then.

@DanTheSpearMan Жыл бұрын
People in the comments really don’t get that Rick runs a business. He’s never the final seller. If you’re looking for 90-100% of the actual value of an item, YOU need to find the person who will hold it in the same esteem as you do. Rick is the guy who buys things for 50-60% of the actual value of an item, then sells it for more money and HE FINDS THE next person who holds an item in high esteem. I’m being a captain obvious but I feel like it’s not a hard concept to follow and people still get mad at Rick for “lowballing” but that’s literally what the pawn shop is for. You’re not getting full value for your item.
@coreytohme98616 ай бұрын
100%. And then for the high price/fame items, they are likely being sold through an auction house or seller and that person will have to get his/her cut. Additionally, some of these items (I am sure) are not actually intended to sell, but instead there for the "wow factor" on the show.

Rick has had several legit chances to up his stakes and status. That George Washington suit was one. It would have upped the tier of people that were willing to deal with Rick. The Jimi guitar was another one that he should have pulled the trigger on. He would have gone from dealing with 5-6 figures to dealing in 7-8 figures.
@MrDabrain75 Жыл бұрын
It's big risk big reward at that point. Once you start talking about these one of a kind items, you can sit on them for years and years before you manage to make a return. And realistically he'd make. Maybe 200-400 thousand if he's lucky after everything is said and done. It's a lot of upfront investment for a decent ish return but the shop has to be able to eat that million or several million dollar hit for a long time. I'm not sure they can pull off those logistics and even if they can, it might be more hassle than their willing to deal with.
@CountrySingerWannabe Жыл бұрын
@@MrDabrain75 My point is, items like that Jimi guitar would raise the bar of people and wealth willing to make deals with Rick. By refusing to raise his bar, the level of people looking to make deals with Rick is stuck below the 7 figure mark.
