America is ranked 25th in science education at the high school graduate level today. Back when this was made, America was #1. The comments section here reflects that decay.
@adensmith64405 жыл бұрын
It's sad. Not just in science but basic literature, penmanship, math, and plenty of other subjects. The general population of the USA is quite under educated. There are people with vast amounts of knowledge, but the population nowadays is underperforming compared to the previous generations.

@Michael Whitewolf Race has nothing to do with it. The problem arises because of people being lazy. And it only gets worse as time goes by. Soon enough almost everything will be automated and the only jobs to be had will be maintenance for the machines. The human race keeps trying to ever evolve to the point of not needing to do anything. All people want to do is sot on their phones or sit at home and be lazy all day long. No one has the drive to make new discoveries anymore.
@nickolasgaspar96605 жыл бұрын
@@adensmith6440 "The problem arises because of people being lazy. " -That is an ignorant thing to say. Human behavior is a product of its environment. Our modern economic system needs "lazy" ignorant people...You should think this type of behavior as the product of type of "Natural Selection" inside our social organization systems.

@@adensmith6440 Not enough money is being put into public education. Laziness has nothing to do with it.
@adensmith64405 жыл бұрын
@@battleonfan1 You're correct to a degree, but regardless of the amount of money put into the public education system, if the student doesn't have the drive to focus on their work or learn the subject at hand, then it will only remain the same. That is partially due to people being lazy, it's also because our education system is failing us. Were headed into the future, yet were still held back by old, outdated teaching methods. There are plenty of factors that play a role and being "lazy" happens to be one of them. It might not be the main cause, but it exists and it plays a big role.

I'm 68, my Christmas chemistry set came with more bottles, a Bunson alchohol burner and the stand with mesh screen to put over the the burner. Lots of small items and test tubes. Even a small flask. All real stuff. My best item I made was gun powder that worked. Parents eventually sneaked it away from me when they thought I might burn down the house.

I am an Indian, and when we were kids these types of science sets were all rage among us. I had a microscope set with all different types of accessories, samples, lenses, flasks and tubes. Chemistry set with a mini burner, mesh thingy, and alot of apparatus. My favourites were my telescope set. I had 3 different types of telescopes. One made of brass which had the best magnification and I loved it. Oh yeah, I saved alot of pocket money in middle school for a magazine called Scientific American. And they sent the magazine straight to India from US, and sometimes there were surprise gifts too!

I had a chemistry set. I made a mix and shook it and it's just exploded the plastic lid of the test tube and shot brown liquid up the wallpaper, ceiling. Everywhere. My Mum weren't too happy because it hadn't long been decorated and I only ended up with it anyway because I took a Jean jacket back to C&A with dodgy poppers and traded it for the chemistry set. Toys from the 50's and 60's had NO CHILL. There were so many dangerous things they'd give to kids back then
@Superstrike_113 жыл бұрын
They had more faith in both the kids and the parents back then. Parents were clever enough to know what was dangerous and what was not, and kids had the common sense to either read the instruction manual, or they would play with Dad. If Dad wasn't home, mom would keep an eye on them. Everything is different today, both kids and adults would be too stupid to play with any Gilbert toys.

it also takes time before the auction happens, you have to pay auction house fees, etc. and that's assuming it sells decently. some people just want/need the cash straight upfront instead of having to go through the hassle. at the end of the day it's free money for unwanted/needed things.
