How to Make Very Simple Dust Boot for the New Carve CNC

Reducing the dust in the shop is critical. Something I’ve wanted to do for a while and today was the day. Grab some materials from around the shop and get to work.

Hello , Another OLD MAN here. (80) Been fooling with CNC for about a year and finally bought a real machine MK2 3 months ago. not a lot of luck with the little Chinese machines, seemed like they were always messing up somehow. Mostly control module problems, Anyway have spent most of my time learning how to use it AND build an easy to use dust shoe. I also have that yellow router that's hard to find a commercial shoe for. I liked how you made your clamp out of PVC, I will be trying it once I find a source for it. You did a fantastic job and yes putting the brush bristles in the shoe is a bear. I spent 2 afternoons putting in mine while doing some unrelated carves. First time I felt confident enough to let the machine run unattended in its dedicated room. So I'll probably try your design next and appreciate you sharing this video on line. The ones I've made either hinder bit changes and zeroing abilities, I don't use a probe, zero by using a piece of sliding paper. So now that I've found you, you have a new follower, subscriber, fan, whatever the correct terminology is. Thanks again for sharing and keep up the great ideas. Don't worry about the length, if its interesting, it will keep your audience tuned in.

To save my waste board, now after zeroing the Z height on the top of the stock, I move the bit off the piece and lower the Z axis until the bit just touches the exposed tape. I use that dimension for the stock thickness. I find this much more accurate than using the nominal figure or even by measuring with calipers.

I just a ordered a new cnc machine and on every demo video they show how much pain it is to clean up all the dust inside the enclosure box, so one of the first thing i will do is make something like this nice simple dust Boot to avoid all these dust inside from the first day i am using this machine. Thank you so much for sharing this idea.

I would love to see more details on how do use Vcarve. I’d like to get away from the annual cost of Easel and have a computer based program with optional updates.

I have many videos using VCarve by Vectric. Do you have specific questions? I can understand not wanting to pay the annual cost of Easel. Also, there are numerous tutorials on the Vectrics webpage. You can start with a trial version and learn. You just can not carve your designs with the trial version. When you are ready you can purchase VCarve Desktop. Later, you can upgrade to Pro version by just paying the difference. The same is true if you ultimately want to upgrade the Aspire. You will need a controller to run the gcode created by VCarve. I use Openbuilds the most. It is free

Great idea but what I noticed with mine it's not easy using the z probe block, very tight with the boot on.

I always probe without the boot on. Once done, put the boot on, start the machine, and carve

What type of dust collection do you use? Shop vac, central system?

For this CNC I am using a shop vac. I also have a central vac system for most of my tools
