PAX West 2019 Tetris Attack Tournament Final

Runback of me vs. Craig (winner) in the Tetris Attack tournament final Saturday, August 31st night at PAX West 2019. A really strange final PAX West for me with long lines through security, almost non-existent cosplay, Freeway Park basically empty, and defending champion Tom Hertzog from Nintendo not showing up. Hopefully someone else can take over recording these next year!

You can immediately see the right player is way, way more technically skilled. But the left player has absolutely mastered the "dig myself out of a hole" strategy. If it works, it works.

Lmao no doubt man, this was me and my best friend growing up, he was like the player on the right side, he understood the ins and outs of the game and could set up the craziest combos I’ve ever seen on this game to this day. But I always fought like hell playing him and would win on an occasion because of it 😅

5:00 That tech to make those x6 purples on the right player's board. I've been playing this game for years and I have never seen that tech. I *did* know you could delay a clear long enough to make a lag chain out of it with perfect timing, but it never occurred to me to swap the same color with itself in order to at least guarantee a clear and possibly a lag chain.

I always called that lag switching lol! you can do it when a block is going to fall in a hole at the bottom of the hole and get horizontal as well as vertical matches on top of that one block while switching it back and forth but its finicky to work sometimes!

great match... never had a 20 minute match though now I want to! quick question: was the speed for the main match a tournment rule to be at 8 or could you have had a lower speed? I know you agreed in the second round to go up to 9 (why the hell not at that point?) Are most tournaments set at a higher level? my brother and I only compete against each other every so often, so we usually only go pretty low (1 or 2 to start, usually make him go higher because he trounces me more times then not).

When I first started attending these tournaments at PAX, the rules had the speed at 5! We eventually all agreed to up it to 8, since it's the last speed before the extra block making the game harder gets introduced, yet still makes it accessible to everybody entering. If time runs low near the end of the tournament, or both players decide to up it to 9 or 10 to save their sanity from endless rounds, we'll go with that. I'm sad I didn't record the match before this, because the 3rd place player lost to a memory overflow glitch in a 10 v 10 game. They should have replayed the round, but he decided to just let it go.

I have to wonder, why did both players continue their chains after x13 on defense? It doesn't increase the block size sent to your opponent past that, so all it's really doing is wasting your panels...isn't it? I always figured it was better to drop your chain the minute you hit x13 so you could restart and send more garbage at your opponent.

The game lags which slows it down. It goes faster when there isn’t so much on screen. Newer versions, like the DS one, don’t have this.

Normally I'd say go to your nearest PAX and take part. But with the current situation, the best you could do is play Panel de Pon online on the Switch.

These tournaments used to be at speed 5! Then we upped it to 8 because it was the highest speed without the extra block, making things progress faster (sometimes) while keeping it accessible. If time for the tournament is running out, and both players agree, later matches can be played at 9 or 10.

They really have a very high level, but I would love to be able to compete with them 2 to see if my level is close enough to be among the best, I play it on the keyboard of a computer, I don't know if they will be playing it on the console, I I think that with a keyboard I have a great level, which hurts not being able to play against them

This video highlights why 2P VS isn't necessarily a very good competition mode. All you ever do is wait to line up matches with time delay, and it goes back and forth for what seems like an eternity. You sit and wait a lot. The two-minute time trial mode would be better suited for 2P competition.
