Apart from the Noble band, which I've always loved (especially in the celebrated Bowlly period), it's been only in these past few years that I've been listening to the Brit bands -- they've become a real passion of mine! It's true that they tend to be more sedate than their American counterparts, but I think in general they have a lovely ensemble sound, with very nice arrangements. Becoming acquainted with the Brits' somewhat different approach is a way to round out my education on my favorite period in mucic. All of these are excellent -- all but a couple were new to me.

Greetings from New Zealand. My father played a golden saxophone in a big band during this era. I was not even born then but I love this music. He must have passed on his musical genes to me. Thank you for your recording efforts. Well done.

I think almost all of us are Larry. I think if people get exposed to it that there is a chance they will discover they like it. My boys in their 20's don't care for it but it's games they play. My teen age daughter likes some of the songs, Boswell Sisters Stop The Sun Stop The Moon is one she really likes. She also likes Murder In The Moonlight.

Hardly believable, was in my kitchen and recognized Al Bowlly's voice coming from the living. His voice has an unmistaken warmth.

My thoughts are, INDEED They are! But there are So many Songs and artist from this period, It`s Hard to say! Very few songs from the 1930`s are awful! There are a few, But not many! American and British Bands are truly the very Best! Even the Dime Store Dance Bands are just FANTASTIC! Songs from around 1929 - 1936 range from Super Fun, Very Sad, Very Sophisticated and Elegant,! The ERA Had the best ever of Recordings! Next up were the Old Time String Bands that later fell into the Western Swing Category, Some were very Hillbilly, Some were Popular Jazz and Blues songs of the time, Some wound up being more or less Hawaiian Recordings (ie) "Married Man Blues" The Night Owls!, Or "St Louis Blues" By Cliff Edwards! WHY this Music (These songs You posted and many others!) is not on the charts today is beyond Me! Well I guess that people have a different ear these days! But the other day I Was Working on My Model T Ford, Wale playing a 1931 Personal Record 170614-1 "Day After Day" by the Princeton Triangle Club Dance Orchestra vocal by Jimmy Stewart (Yes the Actor) Who Crooned this song almost rivaling the very best, A Man around My age showed up with His 1919 Model T Ford Coupe for Me to work on, He heard the Song Playing, I will quote him, So GOD Forgive Me! He said, "GOD Dam met" That is True Music! He said this Crap today made him sick! After I got through Worshipping Him, I Gave Him Some You Tube sites including Yours and My site as well, Because of My Playlist, That could lead him to more sites! He called Me up today, OVERJOYED! He is going to start himself a You Tube account!

IMHO, the British Dance bands that are given examples here were terrific and equaled their American counterparts. In the 1920's a lot of British bands capitalized on the sounds of American Bands and tried to mimic them. Around 1930 or so to about 1935 British Bands developed their own sweeter style, and were every bit as smooth as their counterparts from anywhere else. From that period onward they had an established sound on both sides of the "Pond". Wasn't it Al Bowly who was credited with the familiar style of singing called "crooning"? I stand corrected on this, so please let me know what you think. Thanks for giving us all this treat. All ten songs are great and representative of a slightly sweeter sound as exemplified by the British dance bands of the period. Regards, Joe Cro

Joe, I think perhaps Gene Austin might have been the originator of that singing style.

Yes it is a theatre organ and does sound like a Wurlitzer. This was a UK band so there is a chance it's a different manufacturer.
