I just found the home game in an antique store. I remember the short-lived "Super Pay Cards" that aired in syndication in the early 80s. There was little change in the format.

I remember sitting on the living room floor as a 4 year old watching this on WNEW Channel 5, with my mother and father. I had the home version of this game, sad that I no longer have my parents with me, nor the home game. This set had a very cozy feel to it, makes me want to curl up and fall asleep listening to it. Yes I can be odd...

I remember I used to watch the old 10:00 news on WNEW TV channel 5 when they had John Roland,Bill McCreary,Bill Mazer,John Dockery and Linda Gialanella with the weather,previous folks news and sports alike.The commercial I like was the DIME savings bank commercial.If I remember correctly,the Gong Show with Chuck Barris would come on at 11pm.

My dad and I went to a taping of Pay Cards in November 1968 and the guest celebrity was Perry Como's announcer Frank Gallop. It was the first TV show i remember going to live.and it was a great experience despite my dad being picked as the audience player and Gallop lost.

I was on "Pay Cards" in1969, I would love to locate that show which starred Slappy White. I was the biggest winner on that show and had a great time. I was pregnant when the show taped and it was shown on TV after my baby was born in June 1969. How can I locate this show and view it?? Please help. Thank you, Mary Froner

Hi, If you ever find out (or found out) how to locate these episodes, can you please let me know? My mom was a contestant on this show (I was in audience w/ brother) but unfortunately, she passed away suddenly a few years later. I would love to locate that show. It was taped in Manhattan and I'm pretty sure, we skipped school that day :) Thanks!!!

I don't know why he was overlooked for many major game shows (at least to host) after "The Magnificent Marble Machine" (in the mid 70's). He did announce and do commercial ads. I.e. American Motors and (I think) Budweiser.

Thanks so much for posting this episode of the original "Pay Cards!" I really enjoyed it. Even though it's 46 years old, "Pay Cards!" lets the home viewers play along with the contestants and celebrities, if they know how to play poker:)

My mom tells me that watching this show on WNEW Channel 5 from NYC Was always part of my bedtime ritual when I was two or three years old. I’m obviously too young to remember, and clearly I didn’t understand the strategy of the game, I guess I just like looking at the different cards

Not a bad show, but having 3 contestants spread the gameplay a little thin, IMO...this was improved on Super Pay Cards by having only 2 contestants (which drastically reduced instances of time running short mid-round) and reducing the # of cards on the board for each round to 16, plus it had a better bonus round.

Why does it say "Orange Series" in the end credits?
@pgtcf7806

My assumption is, since they bicycled tapes a lot back then, was more than one batch of videotape copies was sent at a time. May have been another color series or two along with the orange for that purpose.

It may have to do with where the show was shot. It originally eminated from WNEW-TV Studio 5 on E.57th Street in August 1969, then moved to WKRC-TV Cincinnati in the fall of 69. The show moved back to New York in January 1970 and Nicholson-Muir Productions leased studio space from WOR-TV Times Square studios at 1981 Broadway and in the spring of 1970 it finally moved to Reeves Sound Studios on W. 67th Street - those were the episodes labeled “Orange Series.” I believe the shows sot at WOR-TV were labeled ‘red’ or ‘blue’ series but I haven’t seen those episodes since they originally aired so I am relying on 50 years of memory. I don’t know why the show moved so often other than Nicholson-Muir was trying to keep costs down. I saw the show in the audience at WNEW, WOR, and at Reeves Sound Studios. Some historical tidbits: WNEW Studio 5 was originally built by Du Mont when it was a network and was home to the first two seasons of Sgt. Bilko where it was shot on 35mm film, years later the first season of the Electric Company was show there. WOR Times Square Studios originally was built by MGM and home of their television commercial production unit in the 1950’s, it later became a tape house when WOR moved to NJ. Reeves Sound Studios was originally built by WOR-TV in the early 50’s it was sold to NBC in the mid 50’s and served as network studios and later purchased by ABC and was their Lincoln Square Studios where Regis and Kathy Lee came from.

Very few game show tapes survive. Tape was expensive back then. Pay Cards wasn't a network show, but networks were known to reuse tapes for other shows later (called "wiping"). Best bet would be to contact Nicholson/Muir (names in opening credits), or whoever holds the rights.

If their other game show "Spin Off" (CBS 1975) has survived, one may predict this one has too though it is rumored, I'm not saying, that a few stations have aired reruns of Pay Cards until 1981 when Super Pay Cards debuted. Since its cancellation in 1982, both versions have not been seen in the states since, not even GSN has aired it either.

The original Pay Cards indeed had a home game sold in US stores. There was a vinyl sheet with pockets that held the cards, which looked just like you see here. As I recall, the down-side was glossy, but the other side wasn't!

1. I wonder what card game these four people are supposed to be playing, or if it was just a mock game. 2. Mercy that young girl with those glasses, what "style". What the heck was she looking at anyway? 3. I've said it before, this set is dark but cozy to me. I especially love the card suits on the floor. 3a. The clubs are awesome to me, and that same clubs style was used on "Gambit". 4. The 2 contestants are sitting there, staring blankly into space, acting as if they are on death row. No applause from them for the host? Meanies! LOL
