PAYMENT CARD FOR REFUGEES: "Left-wing circumvention industry" - How Munich gets cash flowing!
The payment card for refugees, which offers social benefits instead of cash, has now been introduced in many federal states, but remains highly controversial. While supporters praise the system as transparent and secure against abuse, critics see it as discriminatory and inhumane. The limit of 50 euros in cash per month in Bavaria in particular is causing discontent.
An association in Munich shows refugees in several languages how they can circumvent the system: supermarket vouchers bought with the card are exchanged for cash with sympathizers. This practice has caused outrage among the CSU, which speaks of a "left-wing circumvention industry". Legally, however, such exchanges are not open to challenge.
The introduction of the payment card is intended to prevent money flowing abroad - for example to smugglers - and to reduce the incentive to migrate to Germany. Critics, however, point to possible violations of constitutional law, which requires fair allocation of social benefits regardless of migration policy considerations.
The CSU is now examining whether associations that support the exchange of cash should continue to receive funding. Other federal states are watching developments cautiously. Meanwhile, the discussion is becoming more heated, especially in the run-up to elections.
