Complex coordination: Peter means things like the Tesla Model S, the first iPhone, the SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket, where much of the technology was already there, but the way the pieces were put together to create the end product, was brilliantly new and unique, and so the resulting product was disruptive and revolutionary, "Zero to One"

Arado16 Careful saying "disruptive" in Thiel's wake.

Elon Musk recently warned that too many smart people are going into Finance rather than the STEM subjects because they pay better. This fits with Peter Theil's comment about innovation in Finance but not Engineering.

It is because they are afraid of inventing something revolutionary but not having to pay the rent. also maybe they want to have capital and then invest in their projects and not depend on a greedy investor. the world is a mess

‘I think, technological innovation requires, I think, three separate things, there’s sort of a brilliant breakthrough idea, there is incremental improvement, and there is complex coordination. We are pretty good at the incremental improvement part. We are pretty bad at the other two and we probably need to think really hard about the other two” - Peter Thiel (Sep 2012)

Technological advancement requires: 1. Brilliant breakthrough ideas. 2. Stubborn improvement revisitation. 3. Complex co-ordination & competent management.

Basically what he says is : . don't be afraid to pursue the new idea of greatness & be the one like many greats .bring people together in coordination to solve big problems & provide an Amazing product that Ur proud of & like .my advice: be different & very useful - its always new & great until someone does it and a few years pass, so be at it , its common among people like you

what the hell are research grants for then? stashing underneath the rug?

The biggest tech companies are certainly stashing hundreds of billions of dollars in unused cash under the rug. -You know, just in case, for a rainy day.

he missed out an important aspect: demand. your startup needs to not just be uniquely well in what it does but also be in demand, or at least would change the industry or system that it's involved in from useless to useful to the point that it generates demand. for example, you could revolutionize the floppy disk to the point that reads data 100x faster and could store 100x more information for an extremely cheap production and purchasing cost.

If you're doing a start up, you're probably creating the demand, so that's a tricky part. Take Uber for example: before, nobody would get in a stranger's car

the demand was there - uber offered a better alternative. This is/was a sustaining innovation - not a 'revolutionary' or 'disruptive' breakthrough.@@omarpulido8502
