Even 30 years later, this docuseries is still one of the best you can find on dinosaurs. I remember when this first came out when I was about 7 or so. It was one of my favorite things to watch. We had recorded it off our local PBS station and I watched the VHS recording time and time again. Even in high school, some ten years after the fact, I rewatched the series for a paper we had to write about the future of earth without humans and I used some of the science here to build my menagerie of animals for the paper. I received an A+ on it and my teacher used the paper as a future example of how to approach such a project. I will never forget this series. It is, without a doubt, one of the best ever put together.

Same here. I think this music was also used in the "dinosaur" vhs box set narrated by Walter Cronkite. I may just have blurred the 2 in my mind. Its been about 30 years.

Dude. I cannot express enough of my sincere gratitude for you finding a long lost piece of my childhood that I thought 20 years ago would never be found again. It's also when I was six and Jurassic Park was coming out for the first time. Again from the bottom of my heart, thank you.

its a shame people in the entertainment industry haven't tried to preserve these. I suppose its because the theories of the dinosaurs and other science documentaries are considered constantly on the move and are always updated erased, then rewritten. Even if the information is outdated, and considered "That's how we thought back in the day" it's still useful to educate peoples about outdated theories.

eyeaboveall This program, considering how old it is, still holds up very well with the information provided. The history is extensive and its "revealing" that dinosaurs weren't plodding, cold-blooded beasts really made a lot of dinosaur enthusiasts re-think their view of the creatures. It's magnificent and something I would show to a class today.

I loved this series when I had it on VHS in the 90s, and I love how today we can see it charting the progress of our understanding of dinosaurs and evolution. Here we have reported the birth of the understanding that birds aren’t merely related to dinosaurs, but descended from them. It took 20+ years to get from the discovery to it being featured on this documentary, and now we know this theory as not just niche, but the mainstream understanding of classification. Now we use the terms avian dinosaurs and non-avian dinosaurs. Now we know that a branch of these amazing animals did not die out in the great extinction event, but survived to become the 10,000+ extant species of birds today.

I watched parts of an episode back in the mid '90s, in my teens. I remember I had recorded most of the animated sequences like the stego battling the ceratosaur, etc. At the time even though I had already watched Jurassic Park, the way the dinos were depicted in this show's animated scenes just blew my mind; active, fast moving herbivores as well as carnivores. Nothing like the tail dragging pictures from all the books I had access to at the time. And I find it surprising just how many other people still remember this show so fondly as I do, even if it's dated hehe.

From way back when there were actually many serious, educational and really well made programmes on Discovery Channel ( here in Europe) that didn't underestimate the intelligence, curiousity and attention span of their viewers - instead of the typical contentless and stupid crap that is mostly on these days - just as with National Geographic and History Channel btw. I have recently stopped my subscriptions to these once great channels because of this massive drop in quality and ambition level within the past 10 - 15 years - did anyone else here do that or feel like doing it? 🙄

Nowadays its just cg entertainment with a few basic, easily found facts sprinkled in to keep it together and justify whatever educational group they conned money out of. We had this on VHS when my boys were small, they watched them so much that I think they wore out the tapes, my youngest son's firsts words weren't mama, or dad, or even dino, it was Archaeopteryx. Even though this documentary series was low budget and obviously aimed at children, it was intelligently made, constantly relaying lots of information that hold kids attention. What is missing is the overly loud special effects sounds, the silly dramatic hyperbole, the constant repeating of the same facts, and the flashing lights cut scenes every half minute that are found on most documentaries and TV shows from Discovery Channel and Nat. Geo made in recent years. I find those type of shows an insult to the intelligence of children, and I bet that most kids today would prefer this over the short attention span style of todays junk.
